Additional Comments

I had one crash during my playthrough. The game is buggy enough that I'm not even sure it was Wine's fault ;)

Please at least test "Resting" before Rating this game, and if possible test see if you can pass "The Clerk's Ward" later in the game. (These two issues been around for a while, yet still exist.)And Please make note on MOD (Installed? if so which one.)

Can not enable desktop emulation for some reason
by Igor Zinovyev on Friday March 15th 2013, 6:27

Can someone please help me fix a minor problem? I want to run PS:T in a desktop emulation mode rather than in fullscreen, but it doesn't seem to work. I tried setting different resolutions with the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option checked, but to no avail. It goes fullscreen anyway.

I am using the latest GOG version with all mods installed according to the GOG's mod guide. The desktop resolution gets set to the one I specify in the widescreen mod settings.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Yeah, I observed that when you run a game in wine's emulated desktop mode, and the game resizes itself to the exact same pixel size as the host's screen resolution, the wine window automatically becomes a true fullscreen window.

Not sure if this is something that wine does, or something the window manager does.

In my case, the window manager is KWin.
The upside is that KWin is very user-configurable, so if you are using it too, here is how you can turn the fullscreen window back into a normal maximized window:

1) Make sure the game window is active.
2) Press ALT+F3 to bring up the KWin menu for this window, select the "More Actions" submenu, and un-tick "Fullscreen".
3) Press ALT+F3 again, and this time click "Maximize" in the menu.
4) If you want it to have a title bar, press ALT+F3 again, select the "More Actions" submenu, and un-tick "No Border".

Other window managers might support similar actions, I'm not sure though.

Another solution for this game in particular, would be to tell it (using the widescreen mod) to use a size that is *smaller* than your actual screen size - then the automatic conversion to a fullscreen window should not happen.

Try another software, like "wine config" with wine, see if you got the emulated virtual desktop, if not, than that would be a wine issue.

You can also create a setting profile just for PS:T, and enable virtual desktop. make sure the resolution of the virtual desktop is the same as the resolution you use in PS:T.

Always help to upgrade your wine, (well most of the time really.)

Thank you all who replied to my comment here, I'm sure your suggestions will come in handy for some people facing a similar problem. My problem, however, was solved by a simple reboot. I don't reboot my box very often, I suspend it instead, so it took me a while before I actually stumbled on this solution.
Hanging cutscenes
by dragonfi on Wednesday February 27th 2013, 14:12
It is known that the "Subtitled Cutscenes" fix from the WeiDU fix pack can cause certain in-game cutscenes to hang. It is not a wine issue, but it is easy to mistake as such. Thankfully, removing the fix (by running the WeiDU installer again) solves the problem.
running full screen

To overcome bug,
add the value VideoMemroySize=16 in the registry (under HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct3D) - see

You also need to set the windows version to NT 4.0.

to save others the trouble of how to install mods here is a little how to, the mods might have installed easier with earlier version of wine and weidu.

Create a new prefix for planescape and install the GOG version of planescape torment.

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/planescape/ wine setup_planescape_torment.exe

Here are the links to the mods:

After downloading all files let's begin with modding/patching of the game.

Install the fixpack first. Copy it into your main torment dir and extract it.
Then use the windows exe to run it. I had mixed success with the linux version of the weidu tools.

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/planescape/ wine setup-pst-fix.exe

Select what you want and follow the instructions.

Next is the Unfinished Buisness mod. Extract to torment dir and run it.

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/planescape/ wine setup-pst-ub.exe

Same goes for Quinn's Tweak mod.

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/planescape/ wine setup-pst-tweak.exe

Now you would have a thoroughly patched install with lot of fixes and some new and fun content.
The resolution is still at 640x480 and feels to narrow/small at times.

Get the windows widescreen exe run it from the dir it is in with the follwing command.

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/planescape/ wineconsole cmd

Then copy and paste widescreen-v3.05.exe into the console and the mod will apply.
I have tried to use the linux version of weidu mods but couldn't get it to work.
The script complains about missing bif files and reverts the changes.

Set the wanted resolution (I picked 1024x768) and you are almost ready to play.

Now comes the tricky part, because ghostdogs mod uses a ' in the name, the patching will fail because bash uses it differently than windows.

Follow the link and chnage the names of the directories accordingly.

After that you can patch it with the native weidu linux tools.

WeInstall ghostdog.tp2

Which can be downloaded from here, I use the beta version because of a problem with the tolower script.

Here is my little startup script.

cd .wine/planescape/drive_c/Program\ Files/\ Torment/
xrandr -s 1024x768
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/planescape/ wine Torment.exe
xrandr -s 1920x1200

The game runs fine, resting and changing areas work as normal.

I think that is all for now.

"Get the windows widescreen exe run it from the dir it is in with the follwing command."

How am I supposed to get this exe?
by Alexander on Tuesday December 11th 2012, 5:29
Check the fifth link for the widescreen file. Run as written in my earlier post. Don't think too much has changed with the newer versions of wine.
by Wingnux on Tuesday December 11th 2012, 6:10
Got it working just fine, thanks! =)

Now I'm stuck @ installing the Ghostdog's UI pack:

wingnux@wingnux-desktop:~/jogos/torment$ WeInstall ghostdog/ghostdog.tp2
WeiDU --tlkout dialog.tlk --ftlkout dialogf.tlk --log setup-ghostdog/ghostdog.debug ghostdog/ghostdog.tp2 setup-ghostdog/ghostdog.tp2 ghostdog/ghostdog/ghostdog/ghostdog.tp2 ghostdog/ghostdog/setup-ghostdog/ghostdog.tp2

by Wingnux on Tuesday December 11th 2012, 7:45
[SOLVED] It was a matter of case sensitive files and running a "tolower" on both Planescape install dir and ghostdog dir solved the problem =)
by Efe Acikgoz on Tuesday December 25th 2012, 19:06
I followed your instructions and at last I managed to install and run the game. But when I tried to apply patches I was unable to do any of them. Debug file has the following error:

The same error(BIFF may be in hard-drive CD-path) happens in every mod. I tried deleting and reinstalling the game, my torment.ini file has correct aliases with case sensitive folders as:

I also tried deleting \ at the end of aliases and got the same error as
BIFF may be in hard-drive CD-path [C:\planescape\data/ITEMS.BIF]

Not sure what to do at this point
by Efe Acikgoz on Wednesday December 26th 2012, 17:32
Ok, it took close to an hour but the patch is finally done. Not sure why it takes that long, installed in on windows too and its really fast, really annoying
