All aspects of play and configuration/settings features.
What does not
The Database selection from menu crashes out of the game. I believe this selection invokes other executables like "Opening Book Editor.exe" to edit the opening book files. But most users would not touch this feature. The moves list does not update the black's latest move. The move list is updated only when white's next move is made and posted. However, repainting this window will show the black's move, to include closing the moves window and opening, resizing the moves window, and when the list is long enough, scroll the window.
What was not tested
Did not try the over the Internet mode. Did not try to play midi background music. All WAV files related to this game plays fine.
Chessmaster 5000 is among the initial applications to install on a Windows 95 system and is poorly conceived. The installation assumes DirectX3 is the lastest version and will install without asking the user. For most (Windows) users, they would be frustrated that their lastest DirectX is replaced by obselete DirectX3. I installed on old Windows 95 machine and transferred the application's installed directory to the Linux computer. Chessmaster 5000 does not use the Windows registry, thus easily transportable. As Wine includes DirectX support, only the game files (directory structure) need to be copied to the intended Linux system. The game plays as strong as later versions without the fluff. I used Windows 95 setting in Wine.
