HOWTO PLAY ONLINE

Multiplayer
To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:

(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks

and then exec:
winetricks directplay

It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.

Not Running

I have installed Aoe2 Gold edition and put a no-cd patch but when i try running empires2.exe nothing happens. I tried opening the game for the terminal ("wine empires2.exe") but it gives me this error ----> "0009:err:module:import_dll Library DPLAYX.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\home\\john\\Games\\Age of Empires II\\empires2.exe") not found
0009:err:module:attach_dlls Importing dlls for L"Z:\\home\\john\\Games\\Age of Empires II\\empires2.exe" failed, status c0000135"

After running the command "winetricks directplay" everything was working. The game is working now.

Directplay

Whenever I install direct-play on the admin account on my system it never works on other accounts. Is there a fix for this?

Do you mean you installed it as root? If so it won't work, as each user has it's own wine prefix (by default) and also using WINE as root is dangerous.

Yes I did and I figured it wouldn't work( I ended up figuring everything else out wine related.) As that was more than three months ago. Thanks for your speedy and yet helpful response.
