What works

Everything worked .  Fresh install of wine and new prefix.  No overrides  Just used a nocd crack. Didn't use a virtual desktop or anything.

Additional Comments

The game window will move if you move your cursor all the way to the right and will show black area. This isn't a big deal. You just have to move it back. Hard to explain really. The screens I took don't show what you actually see when you are playing. They show the black area and part of the desktop. It's weird but doesn't affect gameplay.

Multiplayer
To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:

(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks

and then exec:
winetricks directplay

It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.

If you get only a black screen upon starting a game

• after wine 2.13, fix it with winetricks ddr=gdi (see https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43627)
• after wine 3.2, fix it with winetricks csmt=off (see https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44796)
