WineHQ

The Realm

MMORPG

  • Using WINE 20040121 The game is requires Internet Explorer 4 or higher to be installed, and you need a Microsoft Windows license to do this. Used the tutorial on Frank\'s Corner to install IE6, however, the chat in The Realm is does not work. At first the text shows up on one line and becomes overwritten when another event happens. After about five to ten minutes, the text starts to be garbled up, taking up the whole textbox. Typing a message in the textbox and pressing Enter does not do anything. It should send the message to the chat, but the text stays in the textbox and does nothing. The game itself is playable with sound but no MIDI music.

What works

I previously tested the game way back in version 9.17. The game is still *mostly* playable, with some annoyances. Chat seems to work without error also. Only the scrollbar bug hinders gameplay.

Noteworthy improvements since 9.17:

-The game no longer requires installation of Internet Explorer to run.

-The Interfaces elements which would not drag in the previous test (9.17) now do.

What does not

-Scroll-bars do not scroll properly, preventing access to the last few items in any dialog. This includes both the scroll-bars in the 'spells dialog' and the inventory-style dialogs. Interestingly the scroll-bar on the /who dialog is acctually displayed as 2 bars, neither of which work properly. This is the game-stopping bug for playing the game in wine, as you'll never be able to access the last few items in your inventory, cast certain spells. etc.

-Another very minor issue that I did not note in the previous test was the purple outline some of the text in the interface has (see the black text 'West Leinster Gatekeeper' in the screenshot).

-The game is somewhat unstable, randomly crashing between screens on occasion.

-Another very rare occurance which I have only noted twice, and have been unable to reproduce, caused the game to draw outside of the application window, infact all over the desktop.
