IGOR Pro

Great graphing and data analysis program. A must for physicists.

Igor is an integrated program for visualizing, analyzing, transforming and presenting numeric data.
Igor's features include:

  •  Publication-quality graphics
  •  High-speed data display
  •  Ability to handle large data sets
  •  Curve-fitting, Fourier transforms, smoothing, statistics and other analyses
  •  Waveform arithmetic
  •  Image display and processing
  •  Combination graphical and command-line user interface
  •  Automation and data processing via a built-in programming environment
  •  Extensibility through modules written in the C language

Some people use Igor simply to produce high-quality, finely-tuned graphs and page layouts. Others use Igor as an all-purpose workhorse to acquire, analyze and present experimental data using its built-in programming environment. Igor program was written to fulfill the needs of the entire range of Igor users.

Additional Comments

As stated before, igor doesn't run if the system printer is not correctly configured. However, printing doesn't work by default after a debian install of wine. You will need the libwine-print package to avoid igor crashing at startup.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Getting Igor running:

  1. Igor won't start without a printer properly configured (requires the wine-print package in debian)
  2. The Help window doesn't display the controls so you can't drag it and you'll have to kill it with the Ctrl + W shortcut.
  3. Popup menus are capricious, left click on them and then, use the arrow down key... miracle they work.
  4. Igor may print an error message the first time it is launched because the MS fonts are missing but you can substitute them with open source fonts.

  5. To be able to drag the traces with alt+mouse, on gtk based desktops, you will need to reconfigure the default keyboard shortcuts to something else (Super for example). On xfce4, go to settings manager > Window manager tweaks> Accessibility and select "key used to grab and move windows". Set to Super.

Misc:

Another annoying behaviour of igor is to create a lot of shortcuts to all the opened files in the folder it was launched from (the bash default ~/ makes it quickly really dirty). The solution I use is to launch it from the /tmp folder.

Some windows are quite slow natively but simply press the ctrl key, it makes them appear (I still don't know why). The other solution I have found to increase the display speed is the option WINEDEBUG = -all before the wine command to launch the igor.exe file (it doesn't spam the bash and therefore it seems to speed up the display)
