Screen scrambled
by David on Saturday July 2nd 2016, 1:06
The screen starts off in 6 parts, then cuts to four and looks like a kaleidoscope. I assume that this is a graphics problem since the audio works perfectly. Is there any way to fix this?

Dear David,

In order that others can help you, you must give much more information about your hardware and software that you are using.

Start with the operating system and version, which graphics-driver and version, which graphics card, and which wine version, Monitor hardware and resolution used etc.

If I have to take a very very wild guess about your problem, it could be that you are using a very modern monitor with a very high resolution, beyond full hd. An other very wild guess is a damaged graphics card.

Start rome total war in a virtual desktop with a low resolution.

RE: Screen scrambled
by Richard Thier on Tuesday February 21st 2017, 12:21
Good afternoon!

My problem is exactly the same. I tried with wine1.6 and wine1.8 too (the latter I have installed now). When I tried running the game I tried to install directx dlls (as that made games like mount&blade:warband work) and also tried to force create a virtual desktop which didn't seem to help. The game is not crashing, the menu starts and I can hear the music, I can move the mouse and click on the menu items just I do not see anything because of the scrambled screen. Also the screen is not only cut into 6 pieces, but also these parts are basically unreadable. So they are not just parts of the screen at wrong places, but everything is utterly wrong.

Once in the very long ago past I have had a propriatery driver for this Ati VGA but it was supported last time when I had ubuntu 8.04 which was really long ago in a far away galaxy :-). I think this standard driver (which do have 3D support even though slower than original) is the only one I can have I guess.

I am running ubuntu 16.04 and this is the relevant part of my hardware setup:

RTW crashes at start

Hi, maybe you could help me.
Always when I try starting RTW (or Barbarian Invasion) it crashes just before playing the intros. I already tried some solutions that were proposed here but nothing worked for me.

RE: RTW crashes at start
by David on Monday December 25th 2017, 16:29
My RomeTW worked fine with wine v1.8.5.
Since I updated to v2.2.1, the same problem happened to me: crash at start just before the intro.
For me, it worked to disable the lib winegstreamer.
Execute winecfg -> go to "libraries" tab -> select winegstreamer -> press "add", then "edit" -> choose "disable".

Now they work both my steam and non-steam versions of RomeTW.

Everything looks weird
by Michele on Friday October 17th 2014, 16:22
Hi,

I installed Steam through PlayOnLinux (Wine 1.7.22), at the moment I'm playing with an integrated graphic card (Intel GMA 3100) on Ubuntu x86 14.04 LTS. Here a screenshot of the problem: s8.postimg.org/czj8jklbp/Screenshot_from_2014_10_17_23_05_18.png

Note also that it automatically changes resolution every time I start the game till I close the process.

Best regards.
RE: Everything looks weird
by Andreas Schmid on Sunday October 19th 2014, 16:03
Use a nvidia card with proprietary driver.
If you must use the intel graphics chip: Start PlayOnLinux. Select Rome Total war. Left-click the configure button. Press the wine-tab. Left-click on the configure-wine-button. After about 2 seconds the wine-configure program starts. Press the Graphics-tab. Check Emulate virtual screen (Note that the resolution can be adjusted to your desktop screen resolution. But first time around, leave it alone). Left-click ok. Close PlayOnLinux configuration.
Start the game.
The splash screen appears: "Rome Total war".
Then the screen that you posted.
Then: "Sega" screen.
Then: "The creative assembly" screen-
Now a blank screen appears and nothing happens.
Just press once the Esc-button.
Now, the video-intro should start.
Then the start menu appears and all is well.
I hope it works.
(My descriptions are based on german language versions and I translated it to English. The exact wording may be different from the English versions that you are using.)

Thank you for your reply! Now it works but it's extremely slow/laggy (and by extremely I mean that It's hard even to move the mouse cursor in the menu!). Note that it was so also before, when I had the graphic problem.

Best regards
RE: Everything looks weird
by Andreas Schmid on Monday October 20th 2014, 13:57
In general, when you ask for support, you should state, what hardware you are using and what software in detail with version numbers. That way, you increase your chances of getting a useful answer.
By the way how old is your pc?
Have you ever played the game under windows with the same hardware? How did it perform?
Not enough RAM or Videoram are mostly to blame for low performance. Check the minimum spec of the game in the steam store. If you are close and running a modern operating system (Ubuntu 14.04), it is obvious.
You could try to set the lowest graphic resolution in the game. Set the same resolution in the Emulate virtual screen; see my first answer. Check the advanded graphics options box and set all options to low, so the game only requires minimum hardware.
In addition you could also set your operating system to the lowest graphics settings.
That should make it faster.
Hope it works.
Greetings.
RE: Everything looks weird
by Michele on Monday October 20th 2014, 15:23
My PC richly fulfil game's requirements, someone was also able to record with my video card ( youtu.be/d4VnQk9eitQ ). I tried to set everything to low, of course, but that's not the problem because even in the main menu everything is extremely laggy and it is hard even to move the mouse cursor.
BTW my hardware is: Intel Core 2 duo E6500, 3GB Ddr2, Asus P5KPL-AM SE
Installing RTW through Steam
by Alex Martinez on Saturday October 4th 2014, 0:52
I do not own CD copies of this game, but I own the Steam version. The description says that it supports the Steam version, but it doesn't say anywhere how to install RTW through Steam using this client. Any help or link to a installation guide for getting the game up and running on Ubuntu would be greatly appreciated :)
RE: Installing RTW through Steam
by Maquis196 on Saturday October 4th 2014, 2:30
Its the same process as windows tbh. You can follow;

appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19444

to get the steam client installed. Then run it, installed rome total war.

It should be that simple, but I appreciate that someone that hasn't played around with wine before might see it differently. There is also;

www.playonlinux.com/en/

which might be even easier, but I've never used it.

Cheers,
Chris
RE: Installing RTW through Steam
by Alex Martinez on Saturday October 4th 2014, 18:15
Hey, thanks for the reply.

I was messing around with it last night and I got it to work just by installing Steam through PlayOnLinux, then installing Rome Total War through the Windows Steam client, and then just hit play. So far everything seems to work fine.

SOLVED!

That bug affects only the Italian version and occurs on Windows too. It's the "261 a.C. bug", to solve it I had to edit a file. Search on the web for details.
Platinum rating with crashes?
by Tim Cooper on Sunday March 17th 2013, 9:38
Total war has always CTD'd on me, and only the install works. This has always been the case since I bought the "Gold edition" several years ago, tested with many different versions of wine since 1.4. my rig plays skyrim, warband, dark souls, and more flawlessly. tried on 32bit and 63 bit freebsd, same result.

I can only confirm the latest Review. I installed it on top a steam installation with winetricks for X-COM and it installed flawlessly and I played the campaign since hours. Had one crash so far. My system is Arch Linux x64 with nVidia GTX650 and wine 1.7.14.

I have your SAME os, GPU and wine version, but the game crashes for me during the campaign some times when I start a new turn... could you describe what have you installed with winetricks, please???

Well I found out that the crashes affected only the Italian version (on windows too).
Anyway thank you!

Last time I installed something from multiple cd's I was able to umount the cd.

All I did was;

cd ..

In the terminal I ran setup from, it could you cant umount because the setup terminal is still in /mnt/cdrom (or whatever your path is to your cd).

If this doesn't work then maybe copy all the cd's to one directory on your hard drive and install from there, I cant remember if that trick worked with R:TW but worth a go maybe.

Rome Total War - Gold Edition. Graphic problems
by Sebastiano on Tuesday December 20th 2011, 17:24
I tried to make the game work with wine 1.3.28 but the graphic is totally corrupted.
It seems to be due to bad directx configuration: i tried to apply DirectX emulation (the game calls DirectX 9.0c) through winetricks but with no result (... it is also difficult to understand wich directx install in winetricks; you can choose d3dx9, d3dx9_26, ..._28, ...31 and so on). I didn't find any useful guide about that.
I use Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV350 driver for my Ati Radeon 9600 card.
The sound seems to work fine (i use the OSS).
I installed the game through wine using the original dvd of Rome Total War Gold Edition.
I installed the game in the past with an old version of wine (don't remember wich one) and it worked but too slowly. Now it is impossible to read menu options due to graphic corruption.
Any suggestions?
thank you

It seems that the graphic is only corrupted for ATI cards. On nvidia it works perfectly.
Sorry, I can't help you any further.
Videos

Just wondering with all those platinum ratings if anybody actually managed to get the ingame videos (intro, animated menu backgroud, senate tab videos etc.) working and how,
RE: Videos
by Maquis196 on Monday August 29th 2011, 11:40
Hhhmm in my case it was more a question of I completely forgot the game actually had those. Gameplay itself is easily platinum rating, but you are right, without the video's you can't say the game works perfectly, however what do we put down? Wouldn't want to set the game to silver just because some video's that have no impact on the game don't work.

I dont even have access to a regular windows box to test a game to compare things like videos with. Thinking about it though, video's don't work in a _lot_ of games I test.
RE: Videos

No workaround, that is a pity. I suppose platinum rating is fine as long as there is note about the missing videos. I'll probably just open a new bug about it when the gstreamer crash bug is fixed. Gstreamer supports wmv, so probably Wine could also with some work.
Higher Resolutions Possible
by Necron99 on Friday February 11th 2011, 21:00
I managed to get higher resolutions by:

1) Always launch battle in 1151x864 resolution
2) Once in battle you can change the resolution to a higher setting and the cursor will still be able to cover the whole screen.

Ah cheers for this, I think I managed to get higher res at the time as well.

Still pleasantly surprised how well this game plays tbh, last time I tried it wasn't playable at all!

UPDATE: you have to reset the graphics to 1152x864 BEFORE the battle ends or else the next battle will have limited mouse movement...
