Lucasarts released the source code for JKA on April 4th, 2013.
The OpenJK project began the day that the JKA source was released. It is recommended to use the native Linux port instead of WINE due to far better stability. However, many mods such as JA+ or MBII do not have a Linux version available.
Users of JA+ can use Raz0r's japp (JA++) mod. It aims to be be a fully compatible clone of JA+ while also adding new and interesting features.
There has not been a public release of OpenJK yet, but the source can be compiled.
Newer AMD and NVIDIA drivers have so many OpenGL Extensions that Quake 3 engine based games crash when probing the extensions at game launch.
2 solutions:
Download these fixed binaries (are also nocd patched)
OR
If using the NVIDIA proprietary driver you can start the game prefixed with:
__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700
Note to all x86_64 (64 bit) Linux users:
Ensure that your system have installed the OpenGL 32bit compatibility drivers, or else Jedi Academy will not start or work correcty. If you don't know if your system has the 32bit compatibility drivers, ask in your distribution forum or live support chat. (Questions about how this is done will be not answered here, due to the wide range of distributions existing).
A first step can be look at: 3DDriverIssues
You need to use the executable in the GameData directory.
Go to the Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy GameData directory and run jamp.exe in WINE. This opens up Jedi Academy Multiplayer. In my case, it is in /home/michael/Lucasarts/Jedi Knight Jedi Academy/GameData. You should see jamp.exe or jasp.exe... choose which you wish to play and be on your way.
