What works

The online tutorial (http://wix.tramontana.co.hu/tutorial) can be tried properly, WiX can create simple MSI files under Wine without any problems. The candle.exe and light.exe executables work properly. I wrote a short summary on my test at http://www.geogebra.org/trac/wiki/CreateMSIonUnix.

What does not

torch.exe does not work. It requires http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12532 to be solved first. See http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27646 as well.

HowTo / Notes

Read before using versions >= 3.5
The bug at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27133 is serious and easy to miss. Make sure you aren't affected by it when you build your installer; if you use WiX 3.0 then you have nothing to worry about.
HOWTO
While WiX appears to work with Mono, there are several nasty bugs in Mono that will cause it to behave unreliably at best, and to generate subtly broken installers at worst. I have had much better experiences using .NET which should be installed by running 'winetricks dotnet20'.
