Additional Comments

Summary: What works: Installation, Patching, Intro Video, Cinematics, Gameplay What was not tested: Extended gameplay Needed to install properly: 1 - create dvd images of the disk and mount those 1 - install both 'vcrun2010' and 'd3dx9_36' (using winetricks) 2 - disable GLSL using: 'winetricks glsl=disabled' 3 - set the correct amount of video memory: "VideoMemorySize"="1536" (set the correct amount for YOUR Video Card) 4 - run 'wine Configurator.exe' to set the correct video settings 5 - run 'wine witcher2.exe' once, to get the launcher working (drag it to an edge of a screen to use the menu) Test system used: Qosmio X500-15F gaming laptop: video card: NVIDIA GTX 460M - 1536MB memory: 8GB SO-DIMM DDR3-1333 cpu: Intel i7-2630QM Quad Core @2.00Ghz Extended Problem/Solution Guide: (Windows partition or VM => NOT NEEDED, all run on Ubuntu) Assumptions: you use the following wine prefix: WINEPREFIX="~/wineprefixes/TheWitcher2" problem: half way through the installation it asks for dvd 2, but replacing the dvd and pointing it to the correct device doesn't help solution: create an Image of both DVD disks(for example using dd) and mount those: 1 - insert dvd1 2 - sudo umount /media/TW2_EFIS_Disc1 3 - sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/thewitcher2_dvd1.iso bs=1M 4 - wait until the command completes, and then type 'eject' 5 - insert dvd2 6 - sudo umount /media/TW2_EFIS_Disc2 7 - sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/thewitcher2_dvd2.iso bs=1M 8 - wait until the command completes, and then type 'eject' 9 - sudo mkdir /media/disk1 /media/disk2 10 - sudo mount -o loop ~/thewitcher2_dvd1.iso /media/disk1 11 - sudo mount -o loop ~/thewitcher2_dvd2.iso /media/disk2 12 - cd /media/disk1 13 - wine setup.exe 14 - when asked to insert dvd 2, just give the new path name 'z:\\media\\disk2' (as in replacing the '1' with '2') problem: err:module:import_dll Library mfc100u.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\The Witcher 2\\Launcher.exe") not found solution: winetricks vcrun2010 get patch 1.1 => goto: get patch 1.2 => goto: problem: "Installed game version is invalid or incomplete" solution: make sure you choose the correct one, for example when you live in a European country, other then Germany, Switzerland or Austria, choose the ROW patch, NOT the International one problem: "cannot open launcher process" solution: use: winedbg (then type 'cont'+ ENTER to start the process problem: err:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_select >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUseProgramObjectARB @ glsl_shader.c / 4627 solution: winetricks glsl=disabled problem: black screen solution: add: "VideoMemorySize"="1536" (set the correct amount for YOUR Video Card) to: ~/wineprefixes/user.reg section: [Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] problem: fixme:d3dcompiler:D3DCompile data 0x, data_size , filename (null), defines 0x9899378, include 0x32f8d8, entrypoint "vs_main", target "vs_3_0", sflags 0, eflags 0, shader 0x32f8f8, error_messages 0x32f8f0 stub! solution: winetricks d3dx9_36 cd ~/wineprefixes/TheWitcher2/drive_c/Program Files/The Witcher 2/bin wine Configurator.exe wine witcher2.exe cd ~/wineprefixes/TheWitcher2/drive_c/Program Files/The Witcher 2 wine Launcher.exe problem: wine Launcher.exe => doesnt work yet solution: start the game once directly through 'wine witcher2.exe' problem: can't click menu items in Launcher solution: drag the Launcher to an edge of the screen first problem: the cinematics are black and blurry solution: use 'wine Configurator.exe' in the bin folder of the game, and lower your video settings
