What does not
Game CEG DRM kick in telling the user is possibly using a pirated/tampered game
The overlay start at the begining of each match. It disappears alone after two minutes, sometimes can be made disappear pressing esc after 30 seconds.
The game may see an inconsitent VRAM size.
The game may crash when exiting the game or a match (quitting from menu)
ModLoader is unable to detect steam no matter what (relevant only to mod users)
Workarounds
winetricks d3dx11_42 to start the game in DX11 mode.
winetricks d3dcompiler_43 may be required (I had this already installed on the prefix)
DXVK not needed.
During install Steam may launch the Directx installer that may fail. Ignore.

Additional Comments
DXVK status: both DXVK d3d9 and d3d11 dlls introduce some kind of instability to the game. Tested with the RADV driver
Using DXVK may cause the game to crash on some actions:
in DX11 clicking on Avatar conquest, troops and navy tab cause game close with allocation memory errors on DXVK side and HEAP errors, consistently.
in DX9 clicking on Video options (expecially the "gamma and brightness" suboption) may cause the game to close with DXVK allocation errors
Gallium9 status (only for AMD and Intel Cards, DX9 mode):
Seems stable, despite testing for little time
Tested Steam Version, Base game with NO DLC, Italian localized game.

If your game crashes due to awesomium.dll then do the following to get game working again;
Go to the games directory (Steam/steamapps/common/total\ war\ shogun 2/) and rename AwesomiumProcess.exe to AwesomiumProcessOrg.exe
During battles you may encounter a message saying your copy might be counterfeit or that your install is broken. Now this could be because of the FOTS fix mentioned OR there is a problem with how the game knows steam is running.
At first you'll only be able to move your mouse around but if you wait the message goes away and you'll be able to continue the battle as normal.
