What works

  • Playback of MP3s, MPCs, ogg vorbis
  • 7-zip and Unplak reader plugins (7zip, Zip, GZip and Rar files) seems to work ok. (just did a few tests, nothing too deep)
  • AC3 decoder seems to work ok.
  • Album list plugin apparently works.
  • Auto scroller plugin, works nice.
  • Columns UI works so/so.
  • Database search seems to work.
  • Direct sound output works ok
  • You actually get a tray icon and it works (in KDE at least but it should work in GNOME and XFCE too. If you minimize to tray, you have to double click the tray to get window fully back)
  • History plugin works ok.
  • ID3v2 at least reads ok the tags.
  • Extended Playlist Generator works ok
  • LyricShow plugin works ok.
  • Adding files via Playlist->Add files works ok
  • Adding files via Playlist->Add directories works ok now
  • saving and loading of playlists works ok (in fpl format, at least)
  • Track info pannel works ok
  • Tabbed plugin works ok (but it has caused me a few app crashes)
  • waveOut output works ok.

What does not

  • It still crashes from time to time with the infamous USER32.dll.RealChildFromPoint still unimplemented function in wine. (Just try to use the scroller in the mouse, also some times it happens when changing between tabs)
  • The preferences window doesn't always shows ok. (The menus sometimes dissapears, or aren't shown, but you can navigage ok if using the )
  • It looks like I have to mount my cd-rom if I want to play songs (in data format) saved in it.
  • I'm having skips, specially when reading the songs from cd-drom or when I switch in to foobar (it doesn't happen in windows, but it may be related to the heavy load under which the computer is put when using a win32 app under linux).
  • Kernel streaming doesn't works (and I guess it shouldn't work, since is too windows specific).
  • Audio CD writter plugin doesn't works either (but It shouldn't because it needs Ahead Nero's dlls to work)
  • If you don't have a z:\ unit it doesn't seems to be able to add files via Playlist->Add files
  • The status bar doesn't updates it self when it should and double-clicking it doesn't takes you to the current playing song.

Workarounds

Additional Comments

I would really hope that the wine team implemented the ReadChildFromPoint API call, it's the only thing which makes foobar2000 not so confortable to use under linux. There was a patch floating around the foobar forums (I also hope that some day somebody finds a way to fully port it to linux. Main problem: the plug-in architecture is probably way too hard to implement)

HowTo / Notes

Note about foobar2000 0.8.3:
On a fresh Wine install, some of the plugins will not work. In order for all plugins to work, you can either install WMP7 manually, or use Winetricksand set it to install IE6 and WMP7. This process will get all the plugins working in foobar2000.
