solution for Desktop Experience install missing error message

installing the original OneNote2010 leads to the known "Desktop Experience" error message.
Fix: install Office 2010SP1
Problems + Solution
by Peeter Tinits on Tuesday July 2nd 2013, 17:21
I recently installed OneNote 2010 successfully on Ubuntu 13.04 and thought I would share my experience. I first tried it with a recent wine 1.5.x, but was able to solve some problems by reinstalling through PlayOnLinux.

- Attempted installation with wine.

Initially the instructions here were good to follow:

However instead of riched20, riched32 will be required to provide the key pass. Possibly also the rich text box extra just underneath them.

Then you can proceed to run the install file with wine. And this should allow you to run MS Word on linux.

However on starting MS OneNote, there occurred the problem that it needed "Desktop Experience" Windows feature to be installed and turned on. This is equivalent to this issue:;en-us;982762&sd=rss&spid=14897

I was unable to find how to do this, so if anyone knows they may comment below, and thus could not run OneNote with just wine.

- Solution via PlayOnLinux

The solution was found by installing the additional PlayOnLinux frontend, from which MS Office was reinstalled from the same install file.

The installation on PlayOnLinux seems to be smarter and thus the same problem will not repeat, and OneNote was able to run here.

- Extra note

OneNote does not seem to be able to properly exit on closing, so in order to restart the programme, either a reboot is required or
> "killall ONENOTE.EXE" is needed.

If anyone knows a better fix, it would be useful as well.
Install instructions?
by J Smith on Wednesday August 29th 2012, 7:49
Please excuse this "wine newbie" question.

I don't know what the "additional comments" mean. Can you provide an exact step by step on how to do these things and what they mean?

Installed with clean wine prefix (XP)

Used machine.config workaround to install Office 2010

Added native XP libraries to system32 in wine prefix:
- wininet.dll
- riched20.dll
- riched32.dll

I know it's a bit late now, but for the sake of anyone else I'll outline it.

I installed it in a clean wine prefix, aka. A new wine prefix.
~/$ export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-MS
~/$ winecfg
It should set the operating system to XP, exit and continue.

The machine.config thing is outlined here
It is supposedly required to install Office.

The native XP libraries are what I added to {WINEPREFIX}/drive_c/windows/system32
I copied them from an XP home edition installation, you should be able to find them on the internet.
Office installs fine without them, you can add them later (OneNote crashes soon after launch without them)
Free drawing doesn't work
by Ilkka Putaansuu on Sunday July 15th 2012, 8:53
I installed Onenote and other functions work but free drawing doesn't. I've Wine 1.5.8 (set to xp) and Ubuntu 12.04. If I try to select pen, it says "Tablet drivers are not installed on the system. You must install them to enable Tablet features"

Could somebody help me?
