What works

Everything except "hover over text", file properties, and copying and pasting icons via clipboard. Can still get icons out via "saving" them.

The "scanpath" feature works when running IconsExtract through Wine's cmd, for example:

H:\>cd Desktop

H:\Desktop>iconsext.exe -scanpath c:\windows

Then the program starts at the search dialogue with the path you gave already typed in, already typed in.

All the shortcut keys work (Ctrl + i for search, Ctrl + a for select all, Ctrl + s for saving icons, Alt + enter for showing icon info, F8 for at least trying to display "file properties"). Doesn't matter which Ctrl or which Alt or which enter you press; they all work.

Various views work, search dialogue works, can find just icons or just cursors or both cursors and icons, yes it can extract icons and cursor files to *.ico files and *.cur files, "select all" works, Help works, link in Help to website works - opens website in native web browser, scan in process works (only sees processes in its prefix), quit works.

The various ways of doing things all work, i.e., whether you do something by right-click menu, by shortcut key, by the upper buttons, or by the upper "File, Edit, View, Help".

Pressing "Alt" selects "File" in the upper left from where you can use the arrow keys to go through File, Edit, View, and Help options. Both left and right alt work.

Both "Browse Folders..." and "Browse Files..." work in the search dialogue.

When in "details" view, the various detail headers can be resized with the mouse by clicking and dragging their borders.

What does not

Can't copy and paste an icon, not even in Wine's explorer. Rather, icons must be "saved." So I can't right-click an icon, say "copy", right click on my desktop and say "paste". The option to copy is there and isn't grayed out, but on the native end, "paste" is grayed out; it didn't get to the native clipboard.

When I hover the mouse over one of the buttons below "File, Edit, View, Help", I don't get hover-over text. In Windows, I get a text popup when I hold the mouse over a button.

"File properties" still gives the "Invalid parameter" popup error.

Wanted to note that I am getting a new error. When I open up Battle for Naboo, a game, and then open Icons Extract in the same prefix as the one Battle for Naboo is running in, and tell it to "Scan icons in the selected process:" and select BattleforNaboo.exe, I get an error saying "Unable to access this folder, do you want to continue anyway?" I click "Yes", and everything is just fine.

Also, I get a lot more icons for the BattleforNaboo.exe search than I used to because now it also shows search results for user32.dll and shell32.dll, which I don't think it should be doing.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Didn't bother to fully delve into testing "Include only icons with specific image size" or "Include only icons with specific color depth," though I did a couple quick changes to see if less icons show up. I told it to show only ones with 24x32 pixel images, and of course no icons popped up because icons don't come like that. Then I specified to show only icons with 32-bit color, and less icons appeared because Battle for Naboo is an old game and its icons don't have 32-bit color.
Didn't test "Save cursors in ICO files".

Additional Comments

It's a handy little utility great for Wine gamers that want to make a launcher or bash script to start a game that has the game's icon, in the case the launcher isn't already created automatically or got deleted.

I uploaded a screenshot of IconsExtract getting icons from a selected process.

Just recently (close to June 30th 2011), I noticed the "Scan icons in the selected process:" option. I saw it before, but glazed over it. So I tested it out, and it works.
