Selected Test Results

What works

  • Main Application and Activation.
  • Rendering and Importing MP4's and other media (up to 4k).
  • SapphireFX and BorisFX.
  • Built-in Plugins and Scripts.
  • VSTs and other audio plugins.

What does not

  • Video Capture. (either doesn't start, or complains about the capture device being used by another user.)
  • The Publish feature in the drop down menu. (crashes the editor)
  • The Get Media from the Web feature in the drop down menu. (crashes the editor, and winebrowser.exe)

Before you launch the application, you'd need to go to ErrorReportConfig.xml (usually located at C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 10.0\ErrorReportConfig.xml, or /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Sony/Vegas Pro 10.0/ErrorReportConfig.xml) and set the <enabled> tag to no.

Whenever you go ahead and launch the application, it hangs. This is because the IO manager does not work on Wine. This is what you'd need to do to launch the application.

  1.  Open 2 separate terminals (one to launch the Wine task manager, one to launch Vegas 10)
  2.  In one terminal, type wine taskmgr. This is to launch the task manager.
  3.  In the other terminal, type wine "C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 10.0\vegas100.exe", to launch Vegas Pro 10.
  4.  In the terminal that you've opened with the task manager, if you see a process called FileIOSurrogate.exe, end it. Sometimes this doesn't work and it'll still hang. This is normal, just keep going until you get past this.

Vegas isn't the most stable piece of hardware, and so if you are working on a project and you forget to save, that's on you.

For an unknown reason the performance of Vegas 10 becomes better when you use a cracked version of it, which I will not link here. (You can find it pretty easily on the Internet.)

What was not tested

  • Extracting Audio from CD / Burn Disc
  • Audio Buses
  • Export to PSP (PlayStation Portable)
  • Extensions (This is different from Scripting)

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Intel
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

First, create a new wineprefix (you do not have to do this if you already have one, but if you want you can).

Then, go ahead and get the prerequisites for Vegas 10 with winetricks by typing in:

winetricks corefonts fontfix dotnet20 dotnet30 tahoma msxml3 msxml6 directmusic directplay vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 quartz

After that, download the Vegas 10 trial below.

If you have a 32-bit WINEPREFIX, click here to get the 32-bit trial.

Otherwise, click here to get get the 64-bit trial. UPDATE: When you try to install .NET 3.0 on a 64 bit wineprefix, it says it is not supported. This is because .NET 3.0 for 64 bit devices surprisingly does not exist. You may get the 64 bit trial for preservation purposes, but for now create a 32 bit prefix instead.

Go on with the install process and install & activate the application.

If the application hangs, go ahead and read the Workarounds section.

Happy Editing!
