This game will refuse to install in computers with locales that doesn't match with the country where (originally or supposedly) was sold and is meant to be played, so, if your installer dies silently, you're facing this issue and you will need to workaround it using locales. The following example is how to install a Heavy Gear II USA CD:
env LC_ALL=en_US WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-heavygear2 wine D:\\setup.exe
As far I know there are US and German versions of the game, but there might be others localized versions out there, so ensure that the locales match or the installer will die silently.
In order to run wine must be set into win98 or win95 mode.
You need to redefine keys to control the Mech, A to Z keys doesn't work nor numbers (at least in my setup), but luckily Tab, Arrows, Home, End, Page up, Page down and Keypad keys are working and recognized so all useful commands can be stored there. Mouse and gamepad works fine.
Sound shutter and dies rapidly on wine-1.3.25 and later wine versions, use 1.3.24 or lesser.
This game often crash after the end of a mission due to resolution changes, using Virtual Desktop easen that.
Game is less prone to crash with the CD on the drive (than using other dubious methods).
