Populous: The Beginning

What works

Starting a single player game, FMV intros, all under software render mode. Application was run directly as the HW/SW swap utility never works even under Windows.

What does not

Direct3D mode will start, but randomly minimises itself and then crashes upon starting a new game.

• Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

Silver rating given as Direct3D mode does not work. Otherwise, the game appears to run flawlessly under software mode.

• Install in win98 mode: when running the installer do not use the autorun, Navigate to $CDROM/setup/English (or whatever your language is) and run the SETUP.EXE found there.
• Apply patch 1.03
• Run in win98 mode

Mouse override is not needed anymore!

I suggest to play the game inside a wine desktop due to low resolution supported by the game, however fullscreen should works too

This game works with Wine 1.1.29, but not with the newer versions until 1.3.32, which works even better!

Additional infor for 1.1.29:

 

• Make sure you have the MouseWarpOverride registry key (if it does not exist, you will have to create it).
  
• Do not attempt to use hardware acceleration - unfortunate things will happen.
• In my experience, it works a lot better to run it in a window.
• If you have difficulty with a non 1:1 mouse movement ratio (e.g. your mouse sometimes pops out of the window before it reaches the edge), try moving your mouse rapidly to another portion of the window, and then slowly approach the portion you wish to reach.

steps for HOST

1.Host needs to know his  IP address will be something like xxx.xx.xxx.xxx  , x being numbers

2.Open command prompt and type 

"poptb.exe /nUserName1 /h tcp /externip HOST_EXTERN_IP "

replace

->UserName1 with the   desired name that you want in game 

->put your ip address  in place of HOST_EXTERN_IP

and hit enter

steps for CLIENT

1.Ask Host for his IP address

1.Open command prompt type "poptb.exe /nUserName2 /j tcp HOST_EXTERN_IP"

replace

->UserName2 with the   desired name that you want in game 

->HOST_EXTERN_IP with host's IP address

and hit enter  that's all you will join the hosts game setup ready to play

Legend types  : poptb.exe /nLegend /h tcp /externip 192.10.150.170

BigBang types : poptb.exe /nBigBang /j tcp 192.10.150.170
 
NOTE: if you want to run the game in hardware mode replace poptb.exe with d3dpoptb.exe
