Additional Comments
Originally, I installed Wine through Software Manager, ran Winetricks, installed Steam through one of the GUI options which created a separate 64-bit prefix inside .local/share/winetricks/steam/ That led to no sound and no intro movies in the game. Installing Steam manually through the official .msi file within the default 64-bit .wine prefix gave the same results. Then I completely removed .wine from the home folder, ran "export WINEARCH=win32", then "winecfg". That way I got a 32-bit based prefix, installed Steam, downloaded Dead Island and installed the libraries from its redist folder. The game launched and worked with no issues at all.
