HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Multiplayer
To get multiplayer working, you need native directplay dlls. The old howto had a link pointing to outdated directplay dlls which cause problems with wine and generally don't work as expected. However with the latest dplay from DirectX 9.0c multiplayer is (almost - see note for details) flawless.
In the wine wiki is described how to get native direct play dlls.
Personally I would recommend using winetricks directplay which installs dplay dlls and sets overwrite in winecfg, however you may choose do install manually those files in which case you need to:

  1. Place the following dplayx.dll, dpnet.dll, dpnhpast.dll, dpwockx.dll, dplaysvr.exe in your .wine/drive_c/windows/system32
  2. Set those files to overwrite (native, builtin) in winecfg

NOTES: The game always freezes when exiting a multiplayer game.
Sometimes when you host a TCP/IP game, no one is able to connect (any client trying receives an "IP address not found" error.) In this case just rehost and the problem will be gone.

NOTE: Heroes3HD and HD+

You can now play Heroes 3 in HD, utilizing the full size of your screen, thanks to Heroes3HD mod. It doesn't change anything gameplay wise.

With recent Wine releases, Wine prefixes are set to Windows 7. Currently, it causes rendering issues when HD or HD+ mod are installed.

Running winecfg and setting the Windows version to Windows XP solves the rendering issues.

Off screen rendering method
by Calmarius on Thursday November 7th 2019, 0:36
If your offscreen rendering method is "backbuffer" the intro videos freeze and only seems to play when the game is minimzed, set it to "fbo" in the registry to fix.
Random crashes on multi-core processors
by Filip on Thursday October 31st 2019, 10:24
Game crashes if played on muti-core proccesor. Problem can be easily solved by setting single core affinity.
TCP/IP multiplayer

I haven't been able to host TCP/IP games until I installed mdac28 via winetricks.
How to solve error on random map generation
by Erik on Saturday July 21st 2018, 12:52
If you want to play on a randomly generated map, you might get an error that the randomly generated map cannot be saved. To fix this you have to manually make a directory called random_maps in the root game directory (where the main game executable resides).
HOMM3 HD Mod
by Ivan on Saturday April 15th 2017, 4:56
In order to have it properly working in Wine 2.4/Mint 18.1 x64, without any flickering cursor issues, you have to select "32-bit True" for the graphics mode in the executable.
The normal GOG install without the mod works without any problems.
Multiplayer

First, the game always tries to use IP from my work VPN and there is no way to stop it from doing that. Both on mac and linux system.
Second, if I disable the VPN it always use 127.12.34.56 address on mac
Third, (after I added both client and server to the VPN and both client and server thus show IPs from the same subnet) the client always says "IP was not found".
Forth, if I try to "rehost" as said in notes, the game hangs. On mac & linux.
