Hints on running TMF under Wine

In the config menu you need to set "PC1" or "PC0", all above will hide windows and make the game unplayable.

Also you will have to set texture quality below "High", otherwise a map is loaded but does not start or will randomly hang up at the beginning.

These are experiences I have made, so they might not be the same for everyone.

To get working the sound you can try to follow the instructions by david96 (modified by Lauri Niskanen)

There may be some music problems after all these steps, so we need a fix for those.

  • Check that you have replaced the OpenAL32.dll as the HOWTO above tells. Use the correct lettercase.
  • Change to OSS in winecfg. This may cause some problems, but it might be the fix, too.
  • Disable the EAX sound effects and set quality of the sound to low on the game settings. You can also disable the doppler effect.

Install HOWTO This game need the d3dx9_**.dll files. You can install it with the guide or placing it in the game folder.

Also you can install this game by Steam using this link. I don't tested this way using wine.

HOWTO: Audio & General Tweak
  • Install Trackmania using the installer (DVD), it works flawlessly
  • Download this archive and put the two dlls into the game's folder and in /drive_c/windows/system32
  • Check and Install game updates (the Launcher has an option for checking and downloading updates)
  • Modify the graphic options acording to your pc's power: it's known that high graphical settings (advanced shaders, motion blur and so on) can be unstable: if TM hangs or it's very slow, reduce graphical details
  • Play!
Note: when loading information from Internet, like Manialinks or ladders (for example, in the main menu or when selecting a track), the game will probably freeze for some seconds (from 0,5s to about 3s). It's a common issue but it's not a big problem in my opinion.
