What works

Installation and game-play after the following tweaks (using winetricks is not a requirement, but it does make things more convenient-like):

  • win32-prefix is required due to dotnet40.

  • winetricks
    • dotnet40
    • xna40
    • devenum
    • quartz
    • wmp9 or wmp10 (The codec package for the 7+ player offered during installation is not needed.)

  • Additionally required dll which is not available via winetricks (at this time):
    • qedit (Important: After copying the dll, it needs to be registered (wine regsvr32 qedit) after adding the override via winecfg.)
  • Starting with Wine version 1.7.28-123-ga426d33, music and opening movie will be broken without one more native dll (also not in winetricks at this time?):
    • msdmo

Installation can be skipped if one has a previous installation somewhere.  The files can be copied from another prefix for example (under steamapps/common).  Steam itself is not required at runtime.

Steam should install the game fine, and the .NET/XNA installations can be made to work if they don't work out-of-the-box.  Using winetricks will be more convenient, however.

What does not

Without the overrides, the game will not run at all. Windows Media Player is needed for the opening video and music; it is possible to have the game running without the video (will be skipped while the rest of the game works), but that will also result into no music (sound effects do play).

While some success was found with using only parts of WMP, it may not be possible to get around installing the full player, as it seems to be a requirement (due to XNA) for running the game in a native Windows environment as well.

Additionally, the game will occasionally crash when quitting.

Required Workarounds

Using winetricks is not a requirement, but it is used in this guide, as it makes things more convenient-like (using the -q (--unattended) option will make the installation of 'dotnet', 'xna', and 'wmp' much less of a hassle).

  • Additionally required dll which is not available via winetricks (at this time):
    • qedit (Important: After copying the dll, it needs to be registered (wine regsvr32 qedit) after adding the override via winecfg.)

Installation

  • Installation can be skipped if one has a previous installation somewhere.  The files can be copied from another prefix for example (under steamapps/common).  Steam itself is not required at runtime.
  • Steam should install the game fine, and the .NET/XNA installations can be made to work if they don't work out-of-the-box.  Using winetricks will be more convenient, however.
