i try:
- put the last version of AMD Drivers

Major graphics glitches
by andyv on Monday July 2nd 2012, 15:54
Hi,

I have managed to have the game running following the stress workaround. However, once launched it is nearly unusable due to heavy graphic glitching. I have tried launching it in an emulated window to no avail.

I am using Wine 1.5.6 and I have an Intel IGD x86/MMX/SSE2 graphic chipset.

Any idea of what could be happening? Thanks.
RE: Major graphics glitches
by Maquis196 on Monday July 2nd 2012, 15:58
After you launch it, are you able to go into settings and turn off any 3D effects?

The graphics card you use doesn't sound like it suppots direct3d/opengl well at all so by reverting fm to it's original "2d" state then you should be able to enjoy the game.

Of course, I have no way to test with that chipset what your options are but playing around with a combination of;

wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys

In the direct3d part may help. winetricks can do all of those for you I believe.
RE: Major graphics glitches
by andyv on Tuesday July 3rd 2012, 10:27
Thanks for the input.

The game is already set on 2D by default e.g. 3D cannot even be switched on from the graphics menu.

I played around a bit with winetricks and graphics settings but nothing improved.

Is there a particularly successful combination of settings normally used to overcome direct3d/opengl issues?
RE: Major graphics glitches
by Maquis196 on Tuesday July 3rd 2012, 16:35
Hhmm not normally... the 2d really shouldn't be a problem (unless fm now uses some weird from of acceleration that your chipset can't handle).

Could you post a screenshot?
RE: Major graphics glitches
by andyv on Wednesday July 4th 2012, 7:42
I couldn't figure out how to post screenshots directly here, so I have uploaded it on Dropbox: db.tt/G9tTxpWF

Hope it conveys the idea... it's basically pieces of previous pages constantly coming up. For instance, when I captured the screenshot I was launching the tutorial from the Main Menu.
RE: Major graphics glitches
by Maquis196 on Wednesday July 4th 2012, 7:50
I think it's more to do with your desktop then the game...

Can you run the game with either compiz/3d turned off (if you're using unity/gnome3) or just switch to another window manager like xfce4 for a bit.

Those glitches look like the WM behind the game poking through to me
RE: Major graphics glitches
by andyv on Friday July 6th 2012, 10:34
Tried to run the game with all sort of different WM (LXDE, Gnome, Openbox) with 3D on and off, and the glitches are always there.

On a 'different' note, FM11 seems to be giving the same problem (though the glitches are slightly less).
RE: Major graphics glitches
by Maquis196 on Friday July 6th 2012, 10:51
Hhmm they could either be steam in the background or still the WM. Have you played the game in a virtual desktop yet?
RE: Major graphics glitches
by andyv on Monday July 9th 2012, 6:41
Sorry lookes like my previous reply was threaded wrongly. I have tried using virtual desktops, in all resolutions, with no success.
RE: Major graphics glitches

Yes, both on FM12 and 11.

Hi,

Thanks for the input. This options is of Mint though, am I right?

I couldn't find such option under Ubuntu, both with Gnome or Mate.
Use taskset instead of stress
by Jerome B on Monday May 14th 2012, 16:23
Hi,

It seems that "backbuffer count" issue is related to multi core arch, as I have never faced this problem on my previous system (dual core) on FM10, FM11 and FM12.

Affecting fm.exe process to one core is a more efficient workaround on my 8 cores system than the stress command, which was working once out of 50+ tries (but working really nice on power consumption :)

# Launch fm.exe for CPU 0
taskset -c 0 env WINEPREFIX=/path/to /path/to/.../fm.exe

# If you wish reset core affinity when the game starts, assigning fm.exe on all cores.
taskset -p 0xff $(pgrep fm.exe)
RE: Use taskset instead of stress
by Maquis196 on Monday May 14th 2012, 17:20
+10 internets sir.

I gave up trying to get fm2012 working on this 8core. It would simply never work, your fix above and first time it started. I'll make a note immediately.

My sleep pattern dislikes you now, I'm sure you understand why (just one more match...)
RE: Use taskset instead of stress
by Jerome B on Tuesday May 15th 2012, 3:17
Yes, just one more match... I know :p
Glad it works on your system as well!

Just do not forget to add this workaround on the version summary, the stress command is the only workaround available on internet :-)
FBM on a Mac?
by T.J. Arnold on Thursday January 19th 2012, 15:39
Has anyone gotten this to work on a Mac (I'm on Lion)? This is the first game I've had trouble just copying the directions for Linux on.

I get an error similar to below stating, "A serious error was encountered, a crash log has been placed in C:\, etc., etc."
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by Maquis196 on Thursday January 19th 2012, 18:07
sorry if this sounds bizzare or you have something else going on but this game is native for you;

store.steampowered.com/app/71270/

I wouldn't worry about running it through wine when you have a perfectly good OSX version on the disk.

Kinda annoys me this, the game already runs on a unix, so how hard could it be to port to linux as well. Hmmppff.
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by T.J. Arnold on Thursday January 19th 2012, 18:20
I own the Windows version (not via Steam) and don't want to have to buy it twice.
Plus, Mac "ports" of games usually suck and run far better on Wine. Having them rune through emulators such as Cider give noticeably worse performance. Comparing a Wine version of EUIII, for example, to the "official" Mac version is a joke.

But anyway, this is all besides the point, I'm asking for help on how to get it to run on Wine (and all the splendors that this involves), and that should be the only thing that matters.
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by Maquis196 on Friday January 20th 2012, 3:56
Well I was just making sure, not many games have dual ports available and even the retail cd comes with both versions on board (not every mac port uses cider, don't know about fm2012).

As for youre error we'll need to know more about the actual wine problem. The error you've mentioned there is the one FM2012 produces. Assuming you are running a clean prefix and have d3dx9_41.dll installed.

After that lets see what happens
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by T.J. Arnold on Friday January 20th 2012, 8:53
Indeed, that's all I have installed; clean prefix, d3dx_41.
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by Maquis196 on Friday January 20th 2012, 8:57
Okay, can you run the game in the terminal and use pastebin for the error output.

The error you are getting is what I used to get on football manager early on. The game being updated fixed that for me rather then a newer wine.
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by T.J. Arnold on Friday January 20th 2012, 9:20
I have the latest patch installed.

To be quite honest, not sure how to get the game to run via the Terminal.app.

I've tried "start C:\Program Files\SEGA\Football Manager 2012\fm.exe" in both the Terminal.app as well as the Windows Terminal included in WineSkin.
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by Maquis196 on Friday January 20th 2012, 9:34
load up the terminal and try;

wine "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Football Manager 2012\fm.exe"
RE: FBM on a Mac?
by T.J. Arnold on Friday January 20th 2012, 11:23
No dice, didn't work.

Ran WineSkin in Debug mode and got this, not sure if it'll help or not:

Wine version that is sure to work
by João Ricardo Lourenço on Tuesday December 20th 2011, 6:07
Wine 1.3.34 will surely work, but this post goes beyond just the version.

My own compiled version DID NOT work. For some reason, which I am still trying to uncover, it simply would not work.

Grabbing the Wine version that came with Slackware (I downloaded the package from sf.net and hacked it my installation as a test. It worked!

I repeat: the pre-compiled binaries from slackware worked.

Specifically, the culprit was kernel32.dll.so (in $INSTALL/lib/wine).

I hope this helps those still in trouble with getting it to load.

Of course, after this, I had to run stress -c 24 (to get 3/4 of my computer's load filled up), but that was already needed before.

Cheers!

Override DLL

Hi Maquis,

Please post your overrides that work for you, that you have in this moment, that will help me out, so i can test and help as well.

Thanks.
RE: Override DLL
by Maquis196 on Wednesday December 7th 2011, 4:22
I will do, I tried to get the game running in a new prefix but it didn't start before I had to go do something else. Once I get in I'll make sure it's the first thing I do (I really want to know as well)
RE: Override DLL
by Maquis196 on Wednesday December 7th 2011, 17:57
Whoops, got caught up playing eve. I test and the only things I put into system32 were;

d3dx10_41.dll
d3dx9_41.dll

With game set to windows 7 it loaded perfectly. Good times. (I'd be surprised if it used the d3dx10_41 as well)
RE: Override DLL
by Tiago Domingues on Thursday December 8th 2011, 4:55
Still dont get it, using wine 1.3.34, i install the game (without directx and framework), update to 12.04, i put the dll you mentioned above on system32..i always get crash, not in berkelium but on the fm.exe itself

fixme:gameux is verify access on ......
fm.exe unknown codeview......

and the pretty dump next....

From you explanation i don't know if my I7 Core just kills the game.

Thanks, any help is welcome.
RE: Override DLL
by Tiago Domingues on Thursday December 8th 2011, 4:58
Forgot, i didnt do any override, i would like to test with the override dll, i have tried tough disable gameux but the game would crash again just because i disable it...
RE: Override DLL
by Maquis196 on Thursday December 8th 2011, 5:22
Well when you first run the game it installs (or tries to install like all steam games) directx and something else.

I'd get a new prefix going, do the usual steam install, restore your fm install (use steam's backup and restore feature).

Select windows 7, put those 2 dll's in and you should have there a perfect replica of my setup.

Let me know how it goes!
RE: Override DLL
by João Ricardo Lourenço on Tuesday December 20th 2011, 6:01
Hello. I'm going to post this elsewhere, but I found a set of good information.

In my case, all it took was installing a pre-packaged Wine binary. I'm running Gentoo and I roll my own Wine installs (not from the repository). I decided to test a pre-built binary made for another distro so I hacked it into my system. I was stunned to see it worked. Namely, the file kernel32.dll.so was the problem (which I naturally replaced, to test, in /usr/local/lib/wine).

Maybe this can help you! I downloaded and manipulated the contents of the Slackware package, so I can assure you that that version works.

Good luck!
RE: Override DLL
by Pietje on Wednesday March 21st 2012, 14:23
For me the following worked:
Linux Mint 12 with wine-1.3.28 and nvidia-current-updates 280.13-0ubuntu5

Installation
1. Install FM2012 + patch 12.0.4 + SKIDROW crack
2. Add D3DX9_41.dll to drive_c/Program Files/SEGA/Football Manager 2012
3. Create a new, fresh Wine prefix
4. Copy drive_c/Program Files/SEGA/Football Manager 2012 to the new prefix

Without (4), FM2012 would always crash at startup with the infamous Berkelium.dll error. I suppose (4) amount the overriding no DLLs at all.
BTW, I'm not sure if (2) is really necessary.

Running
1. stress -c "number of cores"
2. WINEPREFIX=xxx wine fm.exe

This requires on average 5 attempts before FM2012 actually starts.
FM2012 doesn't run entirely stable, the player comparison screen reliably crashes and there are some random crashes.

I'll be buying FM2012 soon and report back on how it works with Steam and the latest patch version.
RE: Override DLL
by Maquis196 on Wednesday March 21st 2012, 14:39
I think a fm2012 updated removed the berkelium problem, but for me the game doesn't work at all for me anymore. I'm going to submit a bug report, the not working all the time is a _bug_ and im finally going to do it!
RE: Override DLL
by Jerome B on Tuesday May 15th 2012, 5:03
Hi,

For me, only d3dx_36 and disabling gameux through wincfg.
Plese note that the game crashes on my system with d3dx_42.
No luck
by Miguel on Saturday December 3rd 2011, 12:34
I haven't got any luck either:

from wine, I can load the game but it throws me back to the shell right before the start new game window should appear.

With playonlinux I get the same "serious problem" crash reported above.
Clean install
by nenad on Wednesday November 16th 2011, 15:52
I'm running 32bit Kubuntu 11.10.

Which winetricks should I install, and what wine ver should I use to prevent the game to crash at startup.

I managed to run it once or twice from PlayOnLinux, but it was running extremely slowly. To make the matter worse, I deleted the whole wineprefix, and cannot start the game, no matter how I install it.

Also, back in FM10 and FM11 it was often needed to run fm.exe and killall fm.exe several times before the game would actually start. It was the same with FM12. Why is this happening?

Thanks in advance for all feedback!
RE: Clean install
by Tiago Domingues on Wednesday November 16th 2011, 17:45
Join the group.

Still can't get it how this is Gold....In playonlinux always the same error, even installing wine 1.3.32 from deb package or source....

I really would like some steps on this one...
RE: Clean install
by nenad on Thursday November 17th 2011, 2:48
Agreed.

Can't get past the crash error at all.

If someone gets this running, please post:
- wine ver
- winetricks / playonlinux packages you installed

Thanks!
RE: Clean install
by nenad on Thursday November 17th 2011, 3:12
Hold on, I got a result (sort of).

- I installed the latest wine from the wine Ubuntu PPA (ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa)
- Winetricks: dotnet20 and d3dx9_36
- In terminal run stress -c 2 & (I have 2 cores, you may have more or less)
- Run wine fm.exe
- The game starts fine, but it crashes on loading the match engine. Might be dx problem, I'll try other versions as well

NOTE: I updated the game to 12.0.2 and used the no-dvd crk.
Works, but one minor problem
by Semicolon on Friday November 11th 2011, 9:29
I installed wine (version 1.3.32) from scratch. Then installed the game and in winetricks I installed: d3dx9_36 and dotnet20. To start the game I use the stress command as with football manager 2011. The game works nearly without any problems.

But I have one minor problem with the highlighting in menus when hovering over items. The problem only is noticeable when moving my mouse, when I'm not moving the mouse the highlighting works as it should. I've had such an issue before with fm2011, but in my memory the problem solved itself, does anybody know a solution?

I do not notice any difference in performance when using the other dll overrides. So for me d3dx9_36.dll is enough.
RE: Works, but one minor problem
by Issam Mehssani on Saturday November 12th 2011, 4:26
Hey, I've tried to get it working but can't. I get the Berkelium related crash.

When you say you installed from scratch, do you mean you compiled from source? If yes, did you use the --enable-win64 option.

When using wine64 I couldn't get steam installed, it just failed silently. I couldn't get winecfg or winetricks to work either because I had no 'wine' executable, only the wine64 one.
RE: Works, but one minor problem
by Semicolon on Saturday November 12th 2011, 9:42
I actually meant just a clean install, I had deleted all wine folders, so this was all I installed. I have a 32-bit version btw. and didn't install through steam, thereby I'm not a wine expert, so I'm afraid I can't help you. But for me the game worked without too much tricks.

The menu problem does not occur when I run the game with the --windowed and --small_screen options, but then the game takes about 15 mins to start. It would be nice if I could get the game working in fullscreen.
RE: Works, but one minor problem
by Maquis196 on Wednesday November 16th 2011, 15:35
I've been informed that it _really_ helps if you use a cracked version of fm.

It could be berkelium that mixes with steam somehow. I have the cracked release and will be testing it later.
RE: Works, but one minor problem
by Issam Mehssani on Wednesday November 16th 2011, 15:51
I got it to work by installing the debian packages for 1.3.30.
I do use the steam version BTW, no crack.
RE: Works, but one minor problem
by Maquis196 on Wednesday November 16th 2011, 15:56
I'm very glad to hear this! I don't trust the cracked versions. Once I had a multiplayer game with a cracked version and I've never seen so many injuries to MY squad like that game (I was hosting which was annoying since I had a legal version).

Being paranoid ever since. So good to know :)
RE: Works, but one minor problem
by Thorbjørn on Tuesday November 15th 2011, 3:54

RE: Works, but one minor problem

What is stress option, and how do you use it?
RE: Works, but one minor problem
by Maquis196 on Wednesday November 16th 2011, 16:14
look for it in your distro's repo. The program is called stress and you run this;

stress -c $

With $ being the number of cores you have. fm2011 always seemed to start better with the above. If you leave it running long enough; it will always start, but on some computers it could take like 15 mins :S
A serious error was encountered and the application will close.
by deeabLo on Thursday November 10th 2011, 22:19
Hello everyone,

I installed FM 2012 in my computer, and the installation runs perfectly.

But when i tried to open the game, there's a pop-up window said "A serious error was encountered and the application will close. An error file has been generated in: C:\blah\blah blah\blahblahblah.dmp"

Since i am new to Linux, i have no idea how to execute it from terminal so i cannot post the terminal output :p

Do you have any idea to fix this?

P.S: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and Wine 1.3.31. I already installed "directx9 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 corefonts allcodecs" using winetricks, and it makes my PES 2012 and FIFA 12 runs well.
RE: A serious error was encountered and the application will close.
by Michael Baranchik on Friday November 11th 2011, 2:24
I had the same error earlier, but now it seems to work but with 64bit wine.

i run it with `stress --cpu4`, but it takes about 4-5 attempts to start properly.

i have only one dll setting for d3dx9_41 for native. and it seems to work just fine.
RE: A serious error was encountered and the application will close.
by Maquis196 on Friday November 11th 2011, 3:37
You get nothing about berkelium? Or is that erroring out and fm2012 doing a fm2011 and needing your fix to start?

very very interesting, I'll shall look into this over the weekend!
RE: A serious error was encountered and the application will close.

with regular wine i get a crash with berkelium in the traceback,
but with 64bit no such error.

That's the error I had. Read the post I just created: it seems that my binaries were coming out wrong for some reason. Good luck!

hmm, is there any way to run the application without administrator privileges?
because i had this error when i run the application as administrator in Win 7, and everything works fine when i run it as a normal user.

Other then the install of wine you shouldn't need admin privileges for anything. If you have it in windows 7 mode and wine is asking for admin privileges then it wont work.

Where are you getting the problem?
RE: A serious error was encountered and the application will close.

no, it's not what i mean.

I get this error too when i run it in my Win 7 by checking the "Run as administrator" box in its properties, but everything goes normal when i unchecked it. And i think every application which run using wine is running with administrator privileges.

So i wonder is it possible to run the application without administrator privileges?

thank you

Is there any way to solve this with without sudo permmission?
Because i didn't have sudo permission for installing "stress" :|

If you can get your hands on the binary you can just run it from your home directory

I have tried with wine 1.3.32 32bits and no basket...

Even with stress and override i have always the berkelium error (debug) and always the crash dump error...beside have to go everytime to the taskmanager kill the fm process..because hangs on error.

I would like to see more details from the success side and some screenshots would be welcome also.

So to me still garbage...

I had the problem at first with 1.3.23 compiled from source. I then tried 1.3.30 compiled with the --enable-win64 option (wine64 executable) without success.

Afterward, I uninstalled both, and installed the deb packages for 1.3.30 (debian SID) and it works.
