What works

Installing the downloader almost works. It fails to start the service. The files still remain, however attempting to run the Launcher or other apps causes .NET issues with hard coded applications. Turns out, even on windows you MUST install all the launcher/patcher files on the C: drive - I didn't try changing the directory on C:, however I assume something is hard coded. Submitted a bug report to Hi-Rez team. Due to resent updates, I no can't even get the launcher to install - once I am able to, I'll be rebooting to see if that clears the issue, then try installing the game again on "c:"

What does not

The launcher and Updater.

Additional Comments

At this point it appears the updater and launcher which is required to install the full game is written in .NET - This under Linux requires MONO to run and has some missing dependencies. I'm currently updating a Windows VM to install the game with, then will continue to test the game once I've gotten that far.

Graphic bugs in Launcher
by Felix Hellmann on Monday March 18th 2013, 20:58
The're fixed for me when installing gdi+.
Installing compctl32 improves "smoothness" of the launcher.

But I'm still unable to login.
1.4 update
by Reed on Saturday March 10th 2012, 1:22
Installs now, but never successfully patches.

I tried copying over a successful install from Windows and running TribesAscend.exe directly (skipping the launcher), but it fails to run, looking for DX11 dlls - d3dx11_43, X3DAudio1_7, XPAOFX1_5. This happens copying an up to date install from Windows 7 or Windows XP.

As a side note I also tried to run the game in VirtualBox, but it doesn't run because Virtualbox doesn't support Shader Model 3.0 yet.

Installing the redistributable from in the binaries folder for the game will fix that error but replace it with another one regarding tribes.ini not being found.

Just doing an update:

1.3.32 Blocker w/ work around: bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28975

Attempting to install on the "c:" drive still yields a "Failed to start the Hi-Rez Studios Authenticate and Update Service" error. Which ends with a complete un-install of the application due to the error. This is probably due to the fact that the "service" is a .NET application.

I am currently copying a VM based install to Linux to see if a workaround is possible.
RE: Update
by CoolAcid on Saturday November 12th 2011, 22:19
As a last ditch effort, I used winetricks to install DotNet35 (which installed all previous versions too) and attempted an install again, which failed with the above message.

While keeping the "failed" dialog open, I attempted to start the Required Service anyway:

jason@homer:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Hi-Rez Studios$ wine net start HiPatchService
The Hi-Rez Studios Authenticate and Update Service service is starting.
Service request timeout
jason@homer:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Hi-Rez Studios$

Thus, it appears as tho the service will never run.

This service is required in order to run the launcher and install the real game.

Continuing the quest to attempt to run the game from a Migration.
RE: Update - Installed Version
by CoolAcid on Saturday November 12th 2011, 22:38
Attempting to run an installed version requires:

WineTricks:
d3dx11_43
xact_jun2010

Running the TribesAscent.exe file caused the following error:

"Failed to find default engine .ini file to retrieve My Documents subdirectory to use. Force quitting."

Searching the windows machine, I didn't find any .ini files, nor was there any Registry settings.
