HowTo / Notes

How to compile wine from git

1) Ensure that git is installed:

sudo apt-get install git
sudo yum install git

2) Get a copy of the wine source:

git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine-git
cd wine-git

3) Get a copy of the patch:

wget -O KUSER_SHARED_DATA http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=40435

4) Make sure that you have the requirements to compile wine:

http://wiki.winehq.org/Recommended_Packages

Check out this link for 64 bit systems.  You may want to only build the 32bit version to simplify things:

http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit

5) Apply the patch:

cat KUSER_SHARED_DATA | patch -p1

6) Build wine:

./configure
make

See Bug 29168 for more details.

Getting around the hang at loading screen

- Change to the Loading Screen directory.

cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Electronic\ Arts/BioWare/Star\ Wars\ -\ The\ Old\ Republic/swtor/retailclient/LoadingScreens/

- Rename the loading screens

mv LoadingScreen.jpg LoadingScreen.jpg.bak
mv LoadingIconAnim.dds  LoadingIconAnim.dds.bak

At this point you will have a blank screen loading the server list, and people have seen long pauses while try waiting for the server list to load.

Black Screen after some time in game
by sxe on Wednesday July 11th 2012, 11:01
Hi guys,
i just started playing the new test version of the game and it works pretty good on medium settings. I used a patched wine build of course.

My problem is that the game turns black after some time in the game. It happens around 2-5 minutes in game so it is not really playable.

I already tried applying the registry keys mentioned in the comments and also tried to alt tab without success. The game keeps black but i can hear sound.

Anyone has a similar problem?

Thanks

I noticed that the screen is not always black, sometimes the image just freezes.
Installation
by Caleb on Monday July 2nd 2012, 17:33
How did you guys even install the game?? I tried with and without PlayOnLinux and both times I get an error after the first DVD. It says "please insert Disc 2" I put in disc 2 and hit retry but nothing happens. Thanks
RE: Installation
by Caleb on Thursday July 5th 2012, 14:04
I got the game successfully installed. I had to copy all files from the 3 DVD's and put them in a folder, then install from that folder. After installing I made my account, did my product registration code, but after launching the game I try to login but it hangs at the login. Has anyone got around this?

Where should I make the new folder & is there a specific name I should give the folder?

12.04 Pangolin + Wine 1.5.3
by Benjamin Lawrence on Friday May 4th 2012, 8:12
Did another test out, couldn't get it to run at all. Hangs without log or terminal output, which is odd. May be due to the 12.04 upgrade, but it's been 24 hours, and I still can't get it.
RE: 12.04 Pangolin + Wine 1.5.3
by Hideaki on Tuesday May 15th 2012, 8:28
Did this start recently? I switched from Aptosid to Kubuntu 12.04 recently and I haven't been able to run SWTOR since. I've tried everything.

At first I though it was something on my end, but now I'm starting to believe that a recent patch broke something.
RE: 12.04 Pangolin + Wine 1.5.3
by Benjamin Lawrence on Tuesday May 15th 2012, 20:49
The last patch they did, 1.3.something. I contacted some of the people I know at Bioware who are proficient linux users, and they weren't able to help either.

Even tried Codeweavers to no avail.
Swtor 1.2 Fresh Install
by Cory on Sunday April 15th 2012, 11:03
i had to reinstall Swtor so i did it on wine
When Installing Swtor 1.2.0 in wine 1.5.2 it will make a folder named launcher.exe.update you have to take all the Items form it and replace the ones inside the Star Wars - The Old Republic Folder
Empty server list if Windows version set to XP
by Jordi on Saturday April 14th 2012, 7:32
Hi!

In order to try to solve the high texture drop off I need to set up Wine to emulate WinXP, but if I do so, I cannot log into my character and I am given the blank server list.

If I switch to Win7, there is no problem loging in.

I use Wine 1.5.1 with Kuser patch applied on a 64bit Gentoo

by StefanT on Thursday April 12th 2012, 16:04
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 too, and with the special PlayOnLinux wine version 1.5.1-old_republic I can log in and the game starts. But the server selection window is empty.

So yes, for me login works, but no, I cannot play the game either.

did you patch wine i can make it work on ubuntu 11.10
RE: No Internet On Ubuntu 12.04 Beta
by StefanT on Friday April 13th 2012, 9:54
I use the special PlayOnLinux wine version 1.5.1-old_republic.
So, no, I did not patch wine myself, the PlayOnLinux team did.

But it's only my assumption that this is /the/ patch from here - I did not check.

This sounds like what a happens when you run an unpatched version of wine. It would be interesting to see what happens if you compile and patch wine yourself.

Patcher cannot unzip patch data
by Rob Watson on Monday April 2nd 2012, 21:44
I can't patch or launch the game but can login. The launcher.exe log mentions that "patch data could not be unzipped" I've tried reinstalling infozip and wine to no avail. Anyone else have this issue?

No servers
by Ryan on Sunday March 25th 2012, 18:33
Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, wine 1.5 + proof of concept patch

Everything loads up rather quickly, but the server selection list is empty. This seems to be a common problem for Windows users, but the normal solution (removing and adding swtor.exe to the firewall exceptions) doesn't apply.

Has anyone had this issue and resolved it?

This installation was actually copied over from an installation on a Mac with the current unsupported crossover 11 release. Loading times on that were extremely slow but I was able to create a character with that. (that's all I was able to do, though).
RE: No servers
by StefanT on Saturday April 7th 2012, 9:43
It does not work for me either. I am using a PlayOnLinux wine 1.5.1 with the patch applied (at least it reads like being this patch). Copied the SWTOR installation from Windows.

Same symptoms - the server list is empty and after a while the 4001 error appears.
Running on high setting (framerate and artifacts)
by André Fettouhi on Tuesday March 20th 2012, 3:32
Can anyone get swtor with running smoothly on the high or medium settings? If so what kind of framerates are you getting? Please post your specs as well. Many thanks! Do get artifacts on the high setting?

i can run on max no AA on arch linux and ubuntu 20 to 70+ fps on a amd fx6100 and amd 6950 gpu no artifacts the game runs best on a ssd
RE: Running on high setting (framerate and artifacts)
by zephar on Friday March 23rd 2012, 10:37
For some reason I had issues running SWTOR on Ubuntu 11.10. I logged and tried it on the Kubuntu and its nearly tripled my frame rate. in crowded town I get a steady 20 to 30 FPS. (Which is about what I get on windows.)
Blackscreen problem
by ichbinder on Sunday March 18th 2012, 13:53
If you have a blackscreen use this regedit flacks:
Open regedit with the command "wine regedit" (no quotes) to change the values.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"VideoMemorySize"="NNN"

Replace NNN with the amount of VRAM your card has.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"

Since most user do not have a clue about debugging wine, you can set the following variable:

WINEDEBUG=-all
RE: Blackscreen problem
by Brian on Friday March 30th 2012, 10:26
Hi

I wasn't getting this issue two weeks ago when using the KUSHER_SHARED_DATA patch, but since the patch from Wed(?) two weeks ago, I can't get past the black screen of death.

I followed the instructions above(except the WINEDEBUG bit, when does one put that?? :S ), but to no avail.

How/where can I find a winedebug log to look at/give to others to look at when I fail to understand it?

I get the same as you do, with both wine-1.5.0 and current git with and without the KUSER patch.

Just wondering if you got past this as I am getting a very similar crash.

Any thoughts anyone?

TIA.
RE: Get past launcher, but crashes
by B.K. on Saturday April 14th 2012, 0:18
Okay... what finally worked for me to get past this and get to the Server Select screen was a new WINEPREFIX and winetricking in d3dx9 and vcrun2008.

But now I'm getting the in-game error at the Server Select screen of Unable to retrieve Server List.

Getting there...

I'm still having the same issue as I posted originally even after winetricks. What WINEPREFIX are you using?
RE: Get past launcher, but crashes
by test on Saturday April 14th 2012, 3:04
winetricks lied and didn't do vcrun2008 but now instead of the window closing it's just looping at:

RE: Get past launcher, but crashes

Might be a graphics problem. I encounter a similar error when I installed the latest nvidia drivers. I switched to an older version to fix the problem. In my case, I used the recommended drivers ubuntu 12.04 told me to use.

Hope this helps.
Stuck at Launcher update
by Chilihead on Friday March 16th 2012, 1:44
Hello everyone,

I just signed up for the free weekend trial to see if i could get it running. Unfortunately I'm stuck at the Launcher update.

1) Installed the setup into an empty wine prefix.
2) Running the Launcher with the patched wine
3) "The Launcher is being updated" crashes after a while with:

C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\BioWare\Star Wars - The Old Republic>set attempt=Z

C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\BioWare\Star Wars - The Old Republic>:Repeat

4) If i start the Launcher again i now get "The patcher service is temporarilty unavailable"
5) Run FixLauncher and repeat.

What am I Missing? System is a Ubuntu 11.10 x86_64

Unless you compile wine from git with a patch, and install d3dx9 via winetricks. I can say with 100% certainty this game will not work. I'm not certain all you have to do is that, but know the game won't work without directx and the latest wine with a patch.
RE: Stuck at Launcher update
by Sam Silbory on Monday March 19th 2012, 11:37
Hmm it looks like the people are reporting wine 1.3 works with the patch as well.
RE: Stuck at Launcher update
by Jason Wood on Monday March 19th 2012, 17:33
Considering the 1.3 branch is nearly two years old, I wouldn't go so far as saying that 1.3 "works". The 1.4 release candidates (1.3 RCx), 1.4, and the new 1.5 branch do work for sure. Older 1.3 releases may or may not work.
Solved it.
by Chilihead on Friday March 16th 2012, 13:04
Ok I figured it out. The account validation doesn't work with unregistered emailservers like a Postfix running under dyndns....

Made it to the download now.
Trying for OSX Snow Leopard
by Mike on Wednesday March 14th 2012, 18:33
It isn't working for me, yet. I prefer using macports for most things, if possible. Using the following procedure, it build successfully (includes the proof of concept patch). The warnings from my configure were:

configure: libsane 32-bit development files not found, scanners won't be supported.
configure: libv4l 32-bit development files not found.
configure: libgphoto2 32-bit development files not found, digital cameras won't be supported.

configure: libcapi20 32-bit development files not found, ISDN won't be supported.
configure: libgsm 32-bit development files not found, gsm 06.10 codec won't be supported.

The error I get occurs after logging in and clicking Play. It attempts to load, but throws the following messages:

Here is the process I used to build and run it:

I used the following to pull in all the dependencies:

sudo port install git-core wine-devel

Then because I wasn't sure which version gets pulled by the above, I made my own working copy from the git source:

git clone source.winehq.org/git/wine.git ~/wine-git

Then applied the patch:

cd ~/wine-git
wget bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=39208 -O proof_of_concept.patch
cat proof_of_concept.patch |patch -p1

Then build wine:

./configure CPPFLAGS='-I/usr/X11/include -I/opt/local/include' LIBS='-lGL -lGLU' LDFLAGS='-L/usr/X11/lib -L/opt/local/lib'
make

Then I ran it with:

export DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/X11/lib:/usr/lib:/opt/local/lib"
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Electronic\ Arts/BioWare/Star\ Wars-The\ Old\ Republic
~/wine-git/wine explorer /desktop=4,1920x1080 launcher.exe

I've tried other resolutions with no luck. Any ideas?
RE: Trying for OSX Snow Leopard

you can try portingteam.com/index.php/files/file/7187-star-wars-the-old-republic/ - it is working wrapper for swtor.

If you still want to make own wine, make sure you are using gcc-4.2 (not llvm one or clang!) and i recommend this configure parameters for lion (some maybe deprecated)

--without-oss --without-cms --disable-tests --without-v4l --without-alsa --without-audioio --without-capi --with-coreaudio --without-esd --without-hal --without-jack --with-xcomposite --with-xcursor --with-xinerama --with-xinput --with-xml --with-xrandr --with-xrender --with-xshape --with-xshm --with-xslt --with-xxf86vm --with-x --without-fontconfig --without-gphoto --without-gstreamer
ALT command.
by dlbonsai on Wednesday March 14th 2012, 12:21
Hi everyone.

I was wondering if I was the only one having this bug or if not, then I'll open a new bug.

In game, you can set your shortcuts. If I set a shortcut ALT+something
then the mouse loose the game focus, I can move it but clicks don't work anymore.

But this bug doesn't only happen when setting shortcuts, in fact just hitting ALT+(a key {1,2,3,4} for.e.g) will lead to that behavior.
The only way to get the mouse clicking again is to ALT+tab to move back and forth between the game and another app. (Sometimes just pressing multiple times TAB works).

My window manager is Kwin (from kde), the key to move the windows is not ALT, but META. I know that by default it is ALT and because I play games who use ALT shortcuts I changed that.

Thank you for any info. (Compiled from latest git + proof patch (no special options to ./configure Nor any special flags to gcc)

Running : 3.2.9-1-ARCH (x64)
X : X.Org X Server 1.12.0
Pixmap : 0.24.4

I am also experiencing this. the only decent workaround I have found is to run wine with the "emulate a virtual desktop" option enabled. works well enough, but then switching between windows programs (like ventrilo) requires exiting the game.
For people running Ubuntu 64bit
by zephar on Wednesday March 14th 2012, 10:41
If you are running Ubuntu 64bit you will need to do the following below before it is going to let you compile. This worked with my Ubuntu 11.10 amd64 bit version.

Add the Ubuntu Wine PPA as though you were just downloading the package like a normal user. This may give you some packages at newer versions than exist in stock Ubuntu needed for Wine, even if you don't install the Wine package. Then you can get every build dependency that the source package uses (which should be complete)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get build-dep wine1.3

To compile and build is straightforward, with no extra switches required:

./configure
make

Thanks sam, I've actually been using a lot of what you have been saying as my base line for what I have done so far, and I don't believe you are leading me astray. I think from this point, my best option is to start over with a fresh install of ubuntu. Then I can come back and begin again. Wine with Git Patch doesn't work
by Panama Craig on Monday March 12th 2012, 23:09
Ok, so I have done the following...

Started with a fresh install of Ubuntu and installed wine 1.4 then got the build dependencies for 32 bit, since I run 64 bit. I downloaded and compiled wine through git with the proof_of_concept.patch and then renamed the loadingscreenicon.dss and loadingscreen.jpg files, to be preceded by, .bak. I am fully patched and have a fresh install of SWTOR, barely modified. Yet I cannot login, I get stuck at an eternal black screen. From there, I found that most everyone, if not everyone, has gcc-4.5.2 or .3 that can run SWTOR. So here I am, stuck... I follow instructions very quickly, and understand what I am doing, but I do not know these commands off the top of my head.

I believe that from here I probably need to remove wine, then make install it again, along with git, and then recompile wine one last time. From there, since I have already compiled gcc-4.5.2 after downloading it into my home directory. I believe it should work. Can someone help me a bit with figuring them out?

Or perhaps I am just thinking wrong and all I need to do is recompile wine under git again and it might work. I will try this and get back, and will perform a sudo git reset --hard I believe it is... That should clear out the proof of concept patch and allow me to start over with gcc-4.5.2
RE: Wine with Git Patch doesn't work
by Sam Silbory on Tuesday March 13th 2012, 10:38
I'm running the latest Ubuntu with gcc (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) 4.6.1 without issue. There is also another report that this works as well. It should be noted that:

A) I don't seem to need to rename loadingscreenicon.dss and loadingscreen.jpg files.

B) Most people are seeing long load times to get to the server selection screen. Try giving it 2-3 minutes, and see if it loads, hangs, or times out.

PS- Are you sure are you patched? Try cat patch_name |patch -p1 --dry-run in your source tree to check. If it doesn't complain, and ask you if you want to reverse the patch you didn't patch.

Cleaning up the notes
by Sam Silbory on Monday March 12th 2012, 10:36
I've removed a number of notes that don't seem needed any more if you are running a wine from git with the patch. As this is only way things work I don't see the need for the old notes. If you have the game running or think more should be removed, added, or deleted leave a comment.
RE: Cleaning up the notes
by Jozef Bacik on Monday March 12th 2012, 18:50
I dont think that Getting around the hang at loading screen is needed anymore, as it will not solve anything, but only make troubleshooting more difficult.

With KUSER patch - it should not hang on that screen anymore. If there is a black screen after the loading screen - then there is problem with graphics or gcc. If the loading screen is removed, you will receive black screen instant, and you will not know when the loading is finished and if you have some further problems
RE: Cleaning up the notes
by Sam Silbory on Monday March 12th 2012, 22:14
Hmmm you are right. I'd thought you needed that but it seems to work with them put back in place.
Empty Realm List
by Stepan Nassyr on Sunday March 11th 2012, 12:30
After applying the KUSER patch on wine in a chroot installation I get an empty server list. The swtor client logs tell me the following:

2012-03-11T15:34:39.133471 00160F88 ERROR Invalid response received from platform for getShardList request. Status code: 0 [Platform.dozerLib.dozer.ClientServices](clientservices.cpp:bwa::platform::ClientServices::receivedShardList:176)

I tried launching the game with an unmodified wine just to see if it yields the same result - and it does! Is my wine installation missing something?
RE: Empty Realm List
by Jordi on Saturday March 24th 2012, 6:49
Is wine set up to WinXP? If so try Win7. I gave an empty server list as well if I put WinXP. Also make sure you apply the kuser patch
RE: Empty Realm List
by sacha on Saturday May 5th 2012, 20:52
I also was stuck with an empty realm list. The frustrating thing was that it had all been working, but I'd upgraded to Ubuntu 12, but re-installed 11 (because SWTOR doesn't work in 12 atm).

Then I remembered one detail from my original setup, which turned out to matter. In my non-working setup, in winecfg I had Win XP as the default, but Win 7 selected for launcher. By setting Win 7 as the default, and launcher to use the default, things started working again, SWTOR went straight to the character selection screen.
Hang on install
by Sam on Saturday March 10th 2012, 13:18
I made the stupid mistake of removing the already installed SWTOR, and when I attempting a fresh install of it on wine 1.4-rc6 it tends to hang on the "Extract: SWTOR Customer Support.url" and this message pops up in the terminal : wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x0000000c at address 0x7e224ea3 (thread 0027), starting debugger...

Any idea on how I can get this fixed?

Thanks.

Texture quality dropping automatically
by Jordi on Saturday March 10th 2012, 5:18
I finally managed to get into the game thanks to KUSER patch (big thanks!) and game is very much playable.

It has quite less fps than the windows version, but it is nonetheless smooth enough for playing.

I have a texture quality issue thought. I set the texture quality to high and will load fine, but after few seconds moving, texture will drop significantly and remain there. If I make any change on the graphics preferences, it will load again the high quality textures, but same issue will happen.

I use an nVidia GTX 560i graphics card with 1GB of RAM, so I think RAM here is not the issue and I even registered in regedit the RAM graphics card has.

Now my specs:
Gentoo Kernel 3.1.6
nVidia GTX 560i with NV drivers 295.20-r1
Wine 1.4-rc6 with KUSER patch applied
RE: Texture quality dropping automatically
by haxx on Friday March 23rd 2012, 18:00
I had these texture issues as well, but after finding the following on the swtor forums, I tried setting wine to run as windows XP instead of windows 7, and the textures all display properly.

---Technical Details---
Currently the engine/game is turning off the GPU RAM virtualization features of Vista and Windows 7 which is a major feature of the WDM/WDDM technology. This technology allows Windows to manage GPU RAM, by prioritizing textures and assets as needed without saturating the video card’s onboard RAM.

Quality Gain:
Allows medium and high resolution textures, better antialiasing, and various other features to remain enabled for a higher quality image on video cards with lower amounts of RAM. It also allows the higher quality textures to be used on objects in the distance which helps with the terrain, grass, building flaws as you are moving in the game.

Performance Gain:
Increases FPS even with higher Quality settings enabled and reduces the GPU stress by not having to load in and out lower resolution textures. This will even reduce GPU temperatures, as the Memory Controller on the GPU has to do less work with constant loading, unloading, and reloading of game textures and other assets.

Note:
By setting the game to Windows XP Service Pack 3 in the compatibility tab, the game/engine doesn’t override this feature of Windows, and this lets Windows manage the GPU RAM, and even if you have 256mb or 512mb of GPU RAM, Windows will tell the game you have 1024mb or more GPU RAM based on how much system RAM you have available and Windows can allocate to the game.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatelly if I switch to WinXP I end up with blank server list instead of the char selection screen. Tried both wine 1.4-r6 and wine 1.5.0 with kuser patch applied to both.

Proof of concept, KUSER PATCH
by Kane on Friday March 9th 2012, 7:49
Hey, Ok iv been following Bug 29168 and seems that they have come up with a fix but been quite new to Linux and not hurd of git untill the patch i have no idea on how to implement it and my programming knowledge is...... not great.

Anyway i made an attempt last night to figure it out and didnt get very far. here is what i tried:

1.downloaded git
read guide on how to use (parts that where require)
2.cloned wine repository:
git clone source.winehq.org/git/wine.git ~/wine-git
(which created wine-git)
3.attempted to add the two files within git:
git add wine-git\dlls\ntdll\critsection.c
&
git add wine-git\dlls\ntdll\thread.c
(but kept on displaying an error that it could not find it or
something.)
4.I changed both the files using gedit and saved them
(tried the game and still same. Do i have to move the file to a
certain folder within wine or should it pick it straight up form
the wine-git folder. If i use git how do i modify the file and how
upload it bk into the wine repository so the changes take effect?)

Aplogies but im still learning, any help would be amazing!

Cheers kane.

I have no idea how to add the code or from the link with the code their rather I have to copy and paste it or what. I would really like to not have to ever boot in windows again please help!!! You are running a 64 version of Linux. Wine is a 32 bit application. You need to install 32 bit libs and possibly a compiler. How you do this varies from distro to distro.

RE:

yes, go to the folder launcher.exe.update and run launcher from there. If it doesnt work then maybe there is another launcher.exe.update folder. I dont know why this happens, but everytime there is a launcher update it seems that a new launcher.exe.update folder is created. So launching the game from this folder will work

I've been able to patch wine. It gets me past the the infinite loading screen but now leaves me with a blank server list. Can toggle between European and American server lists, but they are both empty.

On windows, the client will take me automatically to the character selection screen as I already have characters made.

I did a clean install of SWTOR and did not rename any files.

Infinte wait at Server Selection Screen
by Joel Pauling on Tuesday February 28th 2012, 22:49
Just creating a new thread for this:

Basically this appears to be the show stopper at the moment.

Using Recent Win (1.4-rc5) The Launcher Login/EULA/Patch update screen mouse over bug appears to be fixed (may also be to do with recent patches for the game itself).

d3d9 library should be installed via winetricks (or alternatively placed into the games directory)

Loader screen Jpg/Icon move Fix required still to get to the server selections screen.

Server Selection screen is populated, but upon selecting a server game sits there (not hung... ) but sits there.

This was using winhq PPA on Ubuntu 11.10 amd64

im using Linux Mint which uses unbunu.

but no further.
I have tried every thing i can think of.
hopefully there will be a fix soon
RE: Infinte wait at Server Selection Screen
by xaris on Wednesday February 29th 2012, 16:27
The current problem is that we cant log in to the server. There are 2 cases:
1)If u havent logged in previously in any server and created a character and
2)If u have logged in previously from a windows machine and created a character.

In the 1st case, u get to the server selection screen on the windows machine. In wine u see the servers but cant log in
In the 2nd case, while on a windows machine, u get automatically connected to the server where u have created a char. So in wine, because u cant connect to the server, u see the endless loading screen.
So to sum it up in wine there are 2 things which will happen. If u have made a char with the account u r trying to login, u will get an endless loading screen, and if u havend created a char with the account u r trying to login, u will get the server selection screen without being able to log in the server.
RE: Infinte wait at Server Selection Screen
by Joel Pauling on Wednesday February 29th 2012, 18:30
This is because you have not moved the loading screen anim and pic out of the way.

Find the Subdirectory called "retailclient/LoadingScreens" in your swtor directory

It should contain:
LoadingIconAnim.dds
LoadingScreen.jpg

and rename these to something else (i.e LoadingScreen.jpg.bak, LoadingIconAnim.dds.bak)
Centos6.2 Can't Install
by Brett on Monday January 23rd 2012, 16:54
Hey all, I'm new to wine, and have used my limited knowledge of linux to try and install SWTOR. I'm currently running Centos6.2, and I can't get past where SWTOR asks for the install language. There are only 2 fixme errors reported to the console and they are reported before the game asks for your language. This is done on the download installer. The disk installer doesn't even open. Any ideas on where to look? I can't find anything on google about those specific errors, they are always nested with other errors. Yes, i did install winetricks and the d3d9 info.
RE: Centos6.2 Can't Install
by Kane on Thursday January 26th 2012, 12:57
you could try to install on another pc and then transfer the files across to the programs folder within wine.
iv not had that error.see if your able to bypass it or see what the errors refer to. might be a simple fix.

I got wine 1.5.1, ran the patch. And I'm still getting the blank screen on the launcher. When I try and run on the desktop, it doens't display any text, so I can't see my username, or the password asterisks, and when it asks the security question, i don't know which one its asking. I've installed everything, I've googled every error message that i get and have fixed all the ones that google can find. Wtf is going on here? Can I not have NVidia drivers? I read that it might be the video drivers or something. I don't know. Anyway, any help is appreciated.

Btw, i'm running centos 6.2, 64bit, and have all the dependencies and whatnot for compiling 32bit. Although, I couldn't compile the latest 1.5.2 wine. Some linking error about can't move and link something thats i686 to x86_64 or vice versa.
How far i get
by Dave on Friday January 6th 2012, 14:35
I got star wars a few days ago and so far I've managed to use the workarounds to get the launcher to load and download files etc.

I used to be able to get to the server selection until I logged on to swtor using a windows computer to select the server as I thought this would skip the sever selection fail, but now I just get a black screen where the character selection/creation screen should be.

Has anyone managed to get further?
RE: How far i get
by Kane on Saturday January 7th 2012, 5:03
Hey,
No i get same issue, i have tried a number of things ie
changing to icb and jpeg file mentioned below
changing the windows version type in wine
adding and removing different libraries
set the icb files withing retailclient to allow executing as a file
through properties
tried to emulate a virtual desktop.
Nothing has seemed to work yet. Im no longer even getting the black screen but after selecting play im only waiting a few minutes before ending the processes, i think normally it takes about 20 mins from pressing launch to getting the blank screen.
In the system monitor there is 3 star wars processes:
launcher.exe and 2 SWTOR, the only SWTOR process that seems to be using any cpu once i have selected 'play' points to the remoterenderserver.icb.
If there is any developers that need to try sumat or need information i would be happy to help so we can finally get SWTOR to work lol.
RE: How far i get

This is the "hung at intro splash" bug. If you have never selected a server before (through a Windows installation), you get the server list, and a permanent "logging into selected server" window when you select a server. If you have selected a server before, you get either a black screen, or the intro splash.

So far, this bug is not solved. It is not even understood.

Latest git source
by Jonathan on Thursday December 29th 2011, 0:21
From this data and time on my comment, the latest git source does not require directx to be installed for the games graphics to work. Unfortunately the communication problem still arises and it will not go beyond the server loading screen.

Just thought i'd give a heads up.

Also, the bug reports don't seem to really focus on the issue of the potential network issues. Anyone have more insight on that or is further debugging needed to be done to properly submit a bug report?
RE: Latest git source
by Jonathan on Thursday December 29th 2011, 10:26
Okay, kind of lied... I forgot i had placed all the d3d* files in the swtor/retailclient/ directory. Doing so does work and prevents you from having to do any dll overrides.
Stuck on "Logging into selected server"
by Dif on Friday December 23rd 2011, 3:42
This topic was already open on the beta page, but since it is still an open issue I will re-start it here.

Basically after selecting a server and clicking "Select" I got a dialog box that states "Logging into selected server..."; the problem is that still it stands there indefinitely and the login never progress forward.

At first I tried to select the "Nightmare Lands" server as it is where my guild is located, but I noticed that the dialog box stayed there for more than the indicated waiting time (waited 40 minutes against the indicated 10). I (force-)closed the game and attempted to login to a server without waiting time and still the dialog box stood there (tested up to 20 minutes).

On the console it keep printing the following two lines:
fixme:d3d:query_init Unhandled query type 0xc.
fixme:win:GetWindowPlacement not supported on other process window 0x80028

Here the screenshot:
www.marcodifresco.com/media/SWTOR-logging-into-selected-server.png

And here the tcpdump:
www.marcodifresco.com/media/swtor-tcpdump.txt

Without any specific error message, it is difficult to prove it, but I think that wine either doesn't catch the confirmation from the server to move on with the login process or it catches it, but still it doesn't trig any action from the game.

Any thought?
RE: Stuck on

I get the same error, the game starts fine but hangs at server login. Frustrating :(
RE: Stuck on
by Dif on Sunday December 25th 2011, 6:38
For the sake of trying again (as there have been few file updated) I relaunched the game.

This time I noticed that under '[SWTOR-PATH]/swtor/retailclient/swtor/logs/' there are several files (that according to the date and time correspond to the several attempts I made) and the last one (referring to this last attempt) called Client_20111225T132820_065492 contains:

2011-12-25T13:28:20.065379 0011B588 DEBUG Constructed with desired state [CS_SHARD_CONNECTED] [Connect.firestorm.client.ConnectionObject](connectionobject.cpp:ConnectionObject::ConnectionObject:42)

I don't know if it is of any use.

As someone else reported, have being tried to login from a Windows machine, now I am not longer getting the server list as the game is trying to log in directly to the last selected server (in my case EU "Nightmare Lands" that has queue).
RE: Stuck on
by Dif on Monday December 26th 2011, 15:26
First thing first: late Marry Christmas (I forgot to make it on the previous post). :)

I think it is kind of implicit, but I want to make clear that beside my work's hours (but I am on vacation until the 28th included) and sleep's hours, I am fully available to do any form of debugging anyone may require to pinpoint and solve the issue; just tell me what you need (i.e. "run tcpdump with these parameters", "run netstat with these parameters", "recompile wine with this patch", etc.).

Since I don't have another game-grade machine with Windows and I would like to avoid to have to mess with the partitions to gain space for a dual-boot (and fully giving up Linux for just one game is out of the question), I am fully motivated to help as much as I can in order to make the game fully runnable as soon as possible.
RE: Stuck on
by zephar on Tuesday December 27th 2011, 16:36
yeah, I really want to get this running on linux as well. anything people can tell me to do to help I am more then happy to do. I am techincially savy, but have not had to every help on bug reporting in wine before.
RE: Stuck on
by Agifem on Tuesday December 27th 2011, 3:19
I have the "hang at intro splash bug". As suggested in the beta, i renamed the files :
retailclient/LoadingScreens/
LoadingIconAnim.dds LoadingScreen.jpg
and I finally got the server list.

If I choose a server and try to connect, I have the same bug you describe.

My intuition tells me both bugs are related, and both are about a network issue about Wine. I can run some tests if needed, but not that many, as I have another bug (It takes me an hour to launch the game).
RE: Stuck on
by zephar on Tuesday December 27th 2011, 16:38
agree it seems to be an issue with winsock as reporting in bug reports of wine above. I was one of em that helped try to guess on what was exactly blocking it. The one wierd thing the launcher worked durring the betas untill some patches during 11/11 that added more servers and some reason broke it =(.
heroengine / .net

Since SWTOR is based on heroengine, am trying to get .net correctly installed in wine. Some people on the heroengine forums are also trying to get heroengine working under wine, but it's dependent on .net...

Maybe this will spark some new ideas here and there ? ;)

This is completely unrelated, the game doesn't use .NET at all.
No Window after launcher
by Agifem on Wednesday December 21st 2011, 2:07
I have a problem that seems similar to the "hang at intro splash" bug. I can login on the launcher, patch without any problem, but when I click "Play", the launcher window disappears, and nothing else happens, graphic-wise.

If i start in a terminal, I can see that the game launches a few things ("server start HeroEngine : / / test1@null::IpcConsole:1" and "server start RemoteRenderer : / / test1@shared::IpcConsole:1"), along with a few fixme messages that seem non-critical, but no error. Once it reaches "Beginning auto-tick. Use to break.", nothing else happens. The launcher process, along with 2 swtor.exe remain active, but seem to do nothing.

With WINEDEBUG=+winsock, I can read a LOT of :
trace:winsock:__WSAFDIsSet (172,0x5b9658(0))
trace:winsock:WS_select read 0x8de868, write (nil), excp (nil) timeout 0x8de974
but I don't know what they mean.

I can try to run more traces/debugs launches if need be.
RE: No Window after launcher
by Richard Griffith on Thursday December 22nd 2011, 7:30
"2 swtor.exe remain active" can you report the command line of those two processess, leave out the encrypted stuff. It would be good to compare windows with the wine version. I don't have windows but see "en-us" the locale string on the swtor.exe command line under wine.
Windows users have reported problems with starting with different locale type settings.

Interestingly my actual locale is en_CA.utf8 but the swtor command line under wine had the tail end
-set platform gamepad.swtor.com:443 -set environment swtor -set lang en-us -set torsets main,en-us @swtor_dual.icb

I am not sure where wine gets its language type setting from. And seeing the en-us thing on the command line indicates some dependencies. This swtor forum thread - www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=18396&page=3
suggests language settings are an issue
1. Go to Control Panel -> Region and Language
2. At the 1st tab ('Formats'), click the 'Additional Settings' buttons that is at the bottom right
3. In the new window, at the 1st tab again ('Numbers'), there is a field called 'Decimal Symbol' and a field called 'Digit Grouping Symbol'. Change decimal symbol to . (dot) and digit grouping symbol to , (comma)
4. Click Apply and then OK on this window and the same on the previous window
5. Launch the game
RE: No Window after launcher

I don't know how to get the command line used by the program.
I get the following as an output :

| Variable ENVIRONMENT set to 'swtor'

| Successfully started server: test1@null::IpcConsole:1'>test1@null::IpcConsole:1">test1@null::IpcConsole:1
-------------------------------------------

I've modified the username and password to 'x', but it's otherwise my username and my encryted password.

I'm french, and my Ubuntu is configured as such.

I'll try this evening changing my Ubuntu language setting, and see what happens (I'm at work right now).

Now that I think, I also have this issue, but it take only about a minute for the game to show up (I got used and this is why I haven't reported it).
Empty server selection screen

Doing exactly as described here (just instead installing - copied Windows installation).

Again, no servers at server selection screen.

tcpdump shows no network activity.

When i delete launcher.exe from preffered applications in winecfg and using overrides for d3dx9 (there a lot of libraries like *dx3d9_24 and so) i get black screen right after login, but i can see network activity :

so I think that I need to set overrides for one of the d3dx9_xx lib

The Open Beta release was very similar to the initial public release. You may want to look at the existing discussion there for help in getting the game working.

Hi,
I have a question about going to the beta page as you suggest for the archive of discussions: there I opened the thread "Stuck on Logging into selected server" that got quite a few comments (and the last few outlined some probable good material to investigate on), but still it wasn't warped up with a solution.

Do I have to leave it there or I can re-open it here to incentivate further comments?

Thank.

Feel free to start up a new thread here if need be. The old version was filled with cruft from beta, so I started this new version to have a fresh start.

There was never an open beta.

The Weekend beta tests happened for a month, and it did work in Wine fine, but right near the end of that going into release, they changed something that caused all the current bugs.

SWTOR does NOT currently work in Wine for anyone, and all the old Beta reports are useless, since changes to the game during beta is what broke it working in Wine.

While that is true there exist a number of issues that have work arounds. You need to address them before you get to the server login issue which prevents game play.
