Carbonite

Nothing special about this version. No version discription is provided by Carbonite. In fact, you have to go into the file properties of the installer to find the verision; Carbonite doesn't tell you at the download page.

What works

Very little. After a significant wait, a small bar of a window appears. This tiny bar is supposed to be the Carbonite installer window. It is sized in such a way that all that is showing is a tiny bar. You can expand it two-dimensionally with the mouse, but this reveals that the window is just a bunch of white space. The mouse disappears over the window. After another significant time period, the Carbonite banner and an online help button load in the window. The rest remains white space. Scroll bars also appear in the window, and they function, though one time they weren't responding for me.

A folder is placed in Program Files named "Carbonite", and its sole contents is an empty folder named "Carbonite Backup".

What does not

Almost all of it does not work. It does not succeed in getting the installer far. It stops very early, before you can even click "next" (next button doesn't even load). Most of the installer window is white space as noted earlier. Mouse disappears over window.

There is also a performance issue here. It is very slow in doing the little it can. It should not be anywhere near this slow.

Workarounds

Additional Comments

And the biggest gotcha of all: ***** Crashplan came out after I bought my Carbonite subscription and after I waited weeks to upload all my files. Crashplan has a native Linux version; Carbonite does not (as of time of writing). Also, Crashplan has a native Solaris version, and Carbonite only has Windows and Mac versions (as of time of writing). Both offer unlimited backup. Also, to get the version number of the installer, open winefile, select the installer file, and press alt+enter. It should be in there.
