HowTo / Notes

Required fixes (as of 2014-08-07)
Set fullscreen
Edit the production_Config.ini file located in ${Documents}/My Games/Path of Exile/. Change fullscreen to true. This prevents the "Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects" crash.

Override openal32.dll:
In winecfg, set the openal32 library to native, builtin or native. This prevents errors involving sound files at launch.
Unconfirmed: An alternative is to launch Path of Exile with sound off with the -nosound flag.
Recommended fixes (as of 2014-08-07)
winetricks riched20.dll // for launcher
winetricks usp10.dll    // fix unicode missing symbols

No effect sound or voice sound, dialogue closes
by CheatCat on Tuesday March 21st 2017, 3:23
I got a problem with path of exile. I cannot hear any sound effects or ambient sound or dialogue voice. When selecting things to talk about on an NPC the text begin to scroll and the the text box closes.

Are there any way to fix this?

Hi!

Which version of Wine do you use? Have you tried other versions of Wine?
Is there any log or error in the output of wine when you launch the game from command line?
RE: No effect sound or voice sound, dialogue closes
by CheatCat on Thursday March 23rd 2017, 2:07
Hey, thanks for the answer :)

I use the wine-2.4 64 bit version I believe on Arch Linux.
I could try earlier versions of wine but it seems the latest works best.

While the only output I find in wine seems related to graphics I found this in a pathofexile log file:
2017/03/22 13:32:48 20358145 65 [WARN Client 50] FMOD MISSING EVENT: event:/Dialogue/NPC/Elreon/Elreon_53$(#).ogg%60SG
2017/03/22 13:32:49 20359330 52 [WARN Client 50] FMOD Failed to load bank FMOD/Desktop/_Effects_Spells_lightning_arrows.bank with error code 18

It might be a cause of some sound is preloaded and the rest of the sounds loads on demand. However when loading on demand the path to the content file is not found. Or something prevents the game to download further content files. I am just guessing here. It seems to be a common problem.

Hi!

Thanks for these clarifications. I search for the FMOD MISSING EVENT error you have, there is a post about it in the PoE forum: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1752062/page/1#p13778763
It suggests removing your content.ggpk and re-downloading it, or even re-installing PoE. As it is a long a boring task, I'll look for other answers about this issue.

Can you try changin Sound options in PathOfExile? For example, do you have "Reverb Enabled" checked? If so, try to disable it. If it still doesn't work, try with older versions of wine (My sound worked fine since the first time I launched PoE, version 1.7.24, until now, version 2.3). Also, maybe you can look for FMOD errors on the archlinux forum (By the way, I use LinuxMint 17.3 64Bit KDE, with wine 64bit too and Playonlinux).

There is some report of same issues around the web, but they are older posts and from Linux, so I think the problem comes from something in your computer/game configuration as it works well for many of Linux users.

Last question, does this issue happen since the first time you launched PoE, or the problem came later?
2017-2-28 Failure To Launch
by Wee Mad Hamish on Tuesday February 28th 2017, 23:00
For anyone who's getting failure very early in the launcher starting, with a message about something unimplemented in msls31.dll, shutting off the riched20 override in winecfg seems to have fixed it for me. So far text is displaying properly, and things seem to be working about as properly as they ever did on my box.
I'm angry
by Cory on Sunday January 29th 2017, 17:51
Tried everything except the:
winetricks psm=3 vsm=3 gsm=3 videomemorysize=xxx glsl=disabled fontsmooth=disable multisampling=disabled

I get lag spikes across the board.
World of Warcraft plays better than this.
I'm using wine2.0
:(
Somebody feel sad for me.
RE: I'm angry
by Ilphrin on Wednesday February 1st 2017, 8:06
Hi Cory,

Have you tried with wine 1.9.20? It looks like the best version for playing with Path Of Exile. And, for me, the parameters you have set with winetricks make the game working a lot less good. (I am using PlayOnLinux though).
keyboard focus issue
by wassy on Saturday September 24th 2016, 15:18
For some reason wine does not get keyboard focus when in fullscreen on certain keys. for example the escape and tab keys revert to the windows manager. but alt and shift keys still appear to work in the game.
This works a lot better than adverised here
by Mikko Rantanen on Tuesday September 6th 2016, 15:32
This POE forum thread is a good source: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/8980/page/162

The game works with latest wine (winetricks glsl disabled) very well. I had same problems with older versions that required nosound etc, but that's not needed.
Atlas of the World install problems
by Andree Patee on Monday September 5th 2016, 16:52
I had to do a format and clean install of ubuntu and I cant get the install of Path of Exile working anymore.

The new .exe does not work, I can select a location and accept the agreement but it crashes when it starts installing.
The .msi installed about 99% but is currently failing on something related to PathOfExile.tmp. It downloads 15 mb and then when it's done downloading it crashes.

I dont know if it's my wine or my ubuntu or something else.
RE: Atlas of the World install problems
by Andree Patee on Monday September 5th 2016, 18:46
It was my wine, not sure how, but I had an older version instead of the newest. So if anyone runs into installation problems, doublecheck your wine version.
Performance improvements // Battle the massive FPS drop
by Armin Altorffer on Saturday July 2nd 2016, 19:41
Path of Exile suffers from massive FPS drops as of 2.3.x; after plenty of attempts to remedy the situation I was almost left to conclude it was somehow related to the network code. Since the problem is mostly random in nature and can be (randomly) fixed by warping out of and into the affected area. So, not graphics related; it would be more consistent.

In the end though, I decided to try something else -- I arrived at the alternate explanation of PoE simply choking on asset loading. So, I decided to simply make PoE's life easier by eliminating an entire class of assets -- sound.

PoE has a nosound commandline switch. And, for some reason or another, the combination of its nosound commandline option and its gc 1 (more aggressive garbage collection) resolved the massive FPS drops for me. The game is extremely playable with the following:

winetricks psm=3 vsm=3 gsm=3 videomemorysize= glsl=disabled fontsmooth=disable multisampling=disabled

and starting PoE with

wine "" -ns -gc 1 >/dev/null 2>&1 &

No more random slideshow-esque framerates at random intervals; just a really consistent, smooth experience.

PS: This is on a default Wine Prefix. So no additional packages via Winetricks. No vcrun2010, usp10, riched20 or whatever. Also, this is on Gallium enabled Wine 1.9.13 (Google for winedri3).
RE: Performance improvements // Battle the massive FPS drop
by Armin Altorffer on Saturday July 2nd 2016, 19:44
Addendum:

The AppDB broke some formatting. Particularly here:

winetricks psm=3 vsm=3 gsm=3 videomemorysize= glsl=disabled fontsmooth=disable multisampling=disabled

which should be

winetricks psm=3 vsm=3 gsm=3 videomemorysize=xxx glsl=disabled fontsmooth=disable multisampling=disabled

where xxx is size in MB.

And, additionally here:

wine "" -ns -gc 1 >/dev/null 2>&1 &

which should be

wine "xxx" -ns -gc 1 >/dev/null 2>&1 &

Where xxx is the path to PoE's Client.exe executable.
RE: Performance improvements // Battle the massive FPS drop
by Ronny Brandt on Sunday June 18th 2017, 9:58
That is working perfectly. Im running this on Arch Linux, all i did was

winetricks psm=3 gsm=3 vsm=3 glsl=disabled

add VideoMemorySize in regedit

and start the game with
wine /path/to/executable.exe -gc 1 >/dev/null 2>&1 &
i can even use the sound without major fps drops, it plays very smooth now! Thanks alot man ;)

in game i suggest to disable PostProcessing and engine multithreading as well as setting shadows to low. Textures can stay at default which was high for me.
It is even working with castOnCrit builds and various herald effects without stuttering, tested it on 3 different chars on maps in Hardcore which i didnt dare before :D
Game performance deteriorates gradually
by Bruno Javier Blasco Smaranda on Saturday July 2nd 2016, 6:34
After a bit of research I realized this is caused because the game leaks video memory. The solution is to close the game and then open it again, but this can be slow and there are some moments in which you can't quit it.

So another solution is to enter text mode by swapping into a tty (for instance tty6 by pressing CTRL-ALT-F6) and then re-entering graphical mode (ALT-F7 or CTRL-ALT-F7). This causes the video card to soft-reset and clear the resources the game should be clearing instead. This entire process should take a pair of seconds; I do it while the game loads a new area. You might want to log in into the tty so the game can run while you're in there, otherwise all your processes will be paused.

Here's the output of nvidia-smi after being ingame for a while, in which you can see the memory usage being half a gig:

RE: Game performance deteriorates gradually
by Armin Altorffer on Wednesday July 6th 2016, 7:25
Technically speaking, no, not all processes pause when you switch to a virtual console. In fact, it is only audio that is paused. This has to do with the design of virtual consoles as well as wth the design of the sound server in use (I'm assuming PulseAudio in your case).
Ver 2.3.1 - if lag try to disable preload
by Sun on Saturday June 25th 2016, 3:31
If your poe is lag on ver 2.3, try add --nopreload argument;

I use playonlinux so I add --nopreload in Gereral -> Arguments and it work very well.
Patch 2.3.0b - Frequent Crashing
by Christopher Pye on Saturday June 4th 2016, 16:51
After the 2.3.0b patch, the game preformed smoothly once again, so long as I set the wine version to WinXP. However, the game crashes with infuriating regularity. This backtrace was from when I simply standing in town, moving items about in my inventory. I've recently removed the OpenAL32 override (as they recently revamped the game's sound system). I'm about to try playing with no sound to see if that works.

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x67a41e30 in 32-bit code (0x7daa66f0).

Insane stuttering

Since the newest update(s) the stuttering in PoE has made the game almost unplayable. Does anyone know some kind of solution?

by Tom on Friday January 29th 2016, 5:40
I keep having my whole system go down (screens blank and then glow bright colors), most frequently in certain areas of act 2 (Southern Forest, Riverways, Wetlands, Western Forest). Mostly posting here to see if anyone else has this issue.

Some strange details of crashes I've had lately w.r.t. PoE on wine:

Graphics go tits up -- screens blank and redraw as a solid color, color seems arbitrary.

Filesystems go read-only -- dmesg shows a libsata error queueing an operation (have seen read and write both, with fqdma (hope I put that right) enabled and disabled. This persists regardless of wine version and even if PoE and its wineprefix are on a ramdisk (so libsata shouldn't bitch) which leads me to believe it's related to the graphics issue and I *think* it might be nvidia drivers going tits up and shitting on the sata bus somehow.

If nobody else has similar issues, perhaps it's just something wonky with my setup and I can accept that, just posting here for posterity in case someone else has such issues (or in case they point to some egregious error somewhere along the codepaths).

Cheers!

Of course, just after I posted this I got greedy with Riverways because there were several yellows, a rogue exile, and a couple blue packs following me to Wetlands (far less crashy than the others mentioned; I told myself "just run straight to the zone transition ffs!)

Well, at least I got to clear all the dudes so I didn't die (I think, not a huge deal because I play softcore since the crashiness will rip any hardcore char at some point).

I have the same issue and the only way for me to recover is to reboot. I'm using wine-staging with Nvidia proprietary drivers.

I managed to figure out what was wrong for me...try cleaning out your heat sinks on your hardware. I'm ashamed to admit that my issue was 100% overheating.

Getting the installer to work
by John on Saturday August 8th 2015, 18:33
So I just installed wine (it looks to be version 1.6.2 on my imac mid 2011 running 10.10.2) and i cd to the desktop where the POE installer folder is. I then try to run "wine icon.clienticon.exe" since that is the only .exe file that I see in the installer folder but I keep getting the error from wine that says "Bad EXE format for ...".
Am I not selecting the right file to launch the installer or is there something else that I need to do? Thanks for the help!

RE: Game crashes during game load after character selection

If you're using CSMT try turning that off. I've been playing POE fine without it, but today when I noticed I wasn't using that I turned it on and I'm crashing in the exact same place.

It's the first game I've run into where it works without CSMT but not with it.

yeah... it's been discussed in the path of exile forums as well. the performance is somewhat worse with 1.7.46 in comparison to 1.7.27-PathOfExile (from play on linux). i don't know what patches are being used though.

Chaotic gamma changes, wine 1.7.19
by Greg Cohen on Tuesday September 16th 2014, 17:32
I'm not that good with words, so i figured it would be easier to show.

Since patch 1.2 of the POE i had some serious performance issues with this game, so i built wine 1.7.19 from the sources, as was recommended,
and applied the patch 'wgl_surface.patch'

Performance is great, game runs stable, but i still can't figure the issue of chaotic gamma (or maybe full screen light) changes.

As i told you before, i don't really know how to describe the situation, so i decided to upload a short 'demo'

www.youtube.com/watch?v=fShWPZ6kuno&feature=youtu.be

Please point me into the direction of solution!
RE: Chaotic gamma changes, wine 1.7.19
by Greg Cohen on Wednesday September 17th 2014, 4:08
Ok, guys, i find the solution. I think.
More like stumbled on it, by trial and error.

So the 2 versions of wine i tested with positive results
1.7.19 and 1.7.26

Wine 'tricks'

winetricks winetricks directx9 vcrun2010 riched20 usp10
winetricks glsl-disable

Registry entry for the game

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"AlwaysOffscreen"="disabled"
"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
"UseGLSL"="disabled"
"VideoMemorySize"="2048"
"VideoPciDeviceID"=dword:000011c0
"VideoPciVendorID"=dword:000010de

The graphics part works perfectly in both cases (both *.19 and *.26)

I do have some minor glitches on audio, thou, but i don't really care about it, i turn the sound off anyway to listen the music. I'll tinker with wine audio subsystem to make it perfect.
but so far - game works just fine , stable 50-60fps, no lags, no fps drops, full graphics details (i turned of shadows, i just don't like them, the rest is on max)

Well, thanks ;)

Now all i need to do is to understand what went wrong with stuttering audio ;)
RE: Chaotic gamma changes, wine 1.7.19
by Greg Cohen on Tuesday September 23rd 2014, 5:52
Btw, i managed to deal with audio stuttering.
It was some wierd glitch of pulseaudio server, and since i don't really need to rerout audio on my system i just completely removed it and using plain ALSA. No more stuttering.
1.2.2 update fps drop
by gary on Thursday September 11th 2014, 20:51
New patch was released and with it anytime I encounter a enemy or cast a spell fps drops from 60fps to 5fps. I am using Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 with wine version 1.6-rc4. Anyone else experiencing this?
RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by gary on Thursday September 11th 2014, 21:03
Actually someone on reddit figured out that the issue occurs when you don't have 100% mana.
RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by Greg Cohen on Friday September 12th 2014, 6:05
wow ;)
Can you point me in the direction of the discussion please?
RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by Greg Cohen on Friday September 12th 2014, 6:02
Yes, i have exactly the same problem, i'm using wine 1.5 myself on ubuntu 10.04.4, till last night i had stable ~50fps (some minor issues, since 1.2 but i worked around it)
Since the latest patch the game became basically unplayable. And a number of my friend, using various versions of wine are telling the same.
I suggest you report it on the official POE forum, but i'm not optimistic.

RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by gary on Friday September 12th 2014, 20:43
Hey there is a fix.

"Install a more recent version of Wine. If you're using PlayOnLinux, click the Configure button while PoE is highlighted, and click the + button beside the Wine version. Add the 1.7.19-WGL_WINE_surface2 version and change it to use that.
While you're at it, go into wine preferences in the wine tab, go to the application tab, and change windows version emulation to Windows 8. This will apparently fix the issues with the game getting really slow over time."
RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by Greg Cohen on Tuesday September 16th 2014, 16:05
Since i'm using 10.04.4 (and need it) 1.7.19 is not avaible for my via repo. So i downloaded wine sources, and made a build of 1.7.19

Performance issues are gone, but a have another problem now.
My gamma is 'acting out', it's kinda jumping between a 'normal' setting and some very bright one, in and out on itself

It cannot prevent me playingm but it's extremely annoying as you might imagine. Looking for solution right now.

No other problem of any kind, game is stable, no sound issues, no performance issues.

Any idea what it could be caused by?
RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by Greg Cohen on Tuesday September 16th 2014, 16:26
ok. my bad, i forgot to actually apply the wgl_surface.patch. Hopefully i'll rebuild my wine and it will work properly ;)
RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by Nicholas Malacarne on Wednesday September 17th 2014, 17:48
Yes, I am also experiencing this problem. I have tried multiple wine versions, but I have had no luck.

I get a really bad FPS drop (down to 1-5 FPS from 50-60) whenever I attack an enemy. My FPS is not effected when I just use an attack and do not hit an enemy (with the default attack skill).

I have also noticed that it will take roughly three seconds per attack that I perform before my FPS kicks up to 50-60 again. e.g. when I perform only one attack my FPS drops for roughly three seconds, but when I perform three attacks in succession my FPS drops for roughly nine seconds.
RE: 1.2.2 update fps drop
by Nicholas Malacarne on Wednesday September 17th 2014, 18:20
I just tried a character with Blood Magic, and I did not have any FPS decrease when using skills.

I have Wine set to Windows 8 and I am using Wine version 1.7.19-WGL_WINE_surface2 with GLSL disabled.
i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Joël on Tuesday August 19th 2014, 7:21
It's a precompiled package from Sebastian Lackner in this bug report :
bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35718#c67
But it's for Archlinux and i'm using OpenSuse.
So if anyone knows of an easy way to do this, i'd love some help.

(all this in the hope of stopping the game from blinking so much that i can't play it)
RE: i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Joël on Wednesday August 20th 2014, 3:24
i spent a whole day at it but i managed to install it and now i only need to figure how to use it instead of the regular wine.

i needed Alien to convert the package (which file extension must be renamed to .tar.gz otherwise Alien refuses to work it).
Alien is a Perl script so it requires an up to date Perl (Perl and Perl-base) which requires requires an earlier Perl version.
The only way i could upgrade Perl was by adding the factory repository.
Then i installed Alien, renamed the file extension and installed the package. It is installed in /opt (which was empty before).
I'm pulling my hair right now.
RE: i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Joël on Thursday August 21st 2014, 9:10
i think i made some progress.
If i run ./winecfg command in a terminal opened in /opt/wine-compholio/bin/
it configures the compolio version of wine.
If i run winecfg command in a terminal anywhere else it configures the regular version of wine (1.7.24 on my machine).
RE: i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Joël on Thursday August 21st 2014, 9:26
Scratch my previous post, it's useless bullshit.

Open a terminal in the game directory, for example :
/home/Winderly/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Path of Exile/
and run the command (edit the game path to match yours):
exec "/opt/wine-compholio/bin/wine" "/home/Winderly/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Path of Exile/PathOfExile.exe"
The flickering is gone :D
The title screen loads fine :D
i'm on my way to test whether it offers better performances than regular wine.
RE: i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Joël on Thursday August 21st 2014, 11:14
i couldn't play since wine 1.7.14 so for some changes i'm not sure if it's because of the game itself or compholio.
My max fps went down to 55 average (i had 100 max before).
Now my fps never go down to zero.
The game is feeling much more stable (i played over an hour long with no noticeable problem).
There is no lag spike when i'm close to a boss.
There is some lag when the game is loading some map areas.

Overall the game became so easy i felt like i was cheating. :D

Only real drawback so far : when i exit the game the terminal from which i ran the game disappears.
RE: i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Sebastian Lackner on Thursday August 21st 2014, 9:42
Hi,

there is no guarantee that the version will work at all, when installed on a different distribution. It might be possible that you're missing some dependencies, so you should check at least

/opt/wine-compholio/bin/wine --check-libs

to ensure that the most important libs are present. To run Wine-compholio, the recommended way is to type the full path instead of just "wine", for example:

cd path/to/your/app
/opt/wine-compholio/bin/wine program.exe

You can find more information about how to use wine-compholio here:
github.com/compholio/wine-compholio/blob/master/README.md#using-wine-compholio

Just an additional remark: Please note that the wine-compholio packages linked in the README above do _not_ contain the patch to fix the stuttering. In my tests they had the side effect, that they crashed other applications, so I decided not to include it in the regular builds yet. The links in the bug report you mentioned above are the only builds that include it. I was hoping that the patches will be improved, and can also be added, but as this doesn't seem to be the case, I will probably try to debug it myself.

Regards,
Sebastian
RE: i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Joël on Thursday August 21st 2014, 11:19
Thanks for helping.

i tried that command to check the dependencies, but all that did is make the terminal disappear.
So i'll just use it as is for now at my own risks.
Good luck with the debugging.

And that may sound selfish but, may compholio someday fix the Diablo black screen bug ?
RE: i'm trying to install wine compholio x86_64
by Sebastian Lackner on Saturday August 23rd 2014, 7:33
Concerning the issue with Diablo - I assume that you mean bug 2082, right? For me it seems like it is a similar issue. Ken Thomases, one of the most experienced people on this area, also just referenced his other patches in one of the last comments. Are you sure that the fix included in your version of wine-compholio doesn't help?

If it doesn't, and the game requires additional fixes: Most of the patches attached to this bugreport contain "hack" in the name, which means these are (most likely) no real proper fixes, only game specific workarounds. Similar to the huge patch to solve the flickering issue, such patches will also have a side effect. As we're maintaining only one version of wine-compholio, we can't include such hacks, without having the problem of regressions. When a hack comments out for example some important part of the code, a different game will probably not render correctly anymore, or completely stop working.

Nevertheless, if you want to get a specific game running, and patching Wine is the only way - you can also suggest that to the PlayOnLinux team - they build several versions of wine, and also allow hacks or workarounds, if this is the only way to get a game running. We don't have the capacity to do that, and all patches in our version have the goal to get upstream in the future.

Regards,
Sebastian
Problem updating to 1.1.3
by Eelco Bosselaar on Thursday May 1st 2014, 11:50
Having problems updating to 1.1.3. Patcher screen stays stuck on 97.5% downloaded and will eventually throw a timeout error about not being able to download a certain sound file.

Trying to workaround this by having steam download the game update and then copying it to my standalone version for PoE.

Already ran PackCheck.exe and it said it fixed my ggpk but the error remains.

I will update when I find out more.
RE: Problem updating to 1.1.3
by Eelco Bosselaar on Thursday May 1st 2014, 11:59
The file it has a problem with downloading seems to be patch211.pathofexile.com:8095/patch/1.1.3.3/Audio/Dialogue/NPC/Atziri_04.dialogue.ogg

Tried to fetch it with wget also gives an error.

So as I said I downloaded the update through native Steam, kinda handy since it will still update games not for Linux.

It also helps that it's just 1 file to replace.

Time to get back on Invasion and do some Molten Strike + CoC + EK :)

Crash with Debian Jessie and latest fglrx-driver

Since the last update of debian jessie and fglrx-driver (14.2~beta1.3), path of exile crash at startup.

For now, the only way to have it work is to not upgrade your debian.

The upgrade will update xorg-server to a newer major version which is not compatible with previous fglrx-drivers, so downgrade is very difficult.

I'm trying to update to latest ati drivers manually (14.3) to check.

Wrong install path

I only have one problem with my PoE install. It doesn't install the files in the folder I specify. It installs them directly into my Home directory, without a subdirectory.

How to fix that?

PS: I use a seperate prefix for it.
RE: Wrong install path
by Dan (Strit) Johansen on Saturday February 15th 2014, 7:28
I found a solution and a reason to this problem.

The installer installs it in the directory you are running the command from, usually your /home folder. So before running the installer, "cd" into the directory where you want the game to store the big files, and run the installer there.

edit: I have installed amd fglrx drivers 14.1 and the game worked, but I don't want to use fglrx driver so I removed them and I still would like to know how to make the game works with mesa drivers.

installing the package libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386 worked for me =)

sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386
Installation over Steam
by pfftzo on Monday January 27th 2014, 14:54
I just installed it via Steam and when I started it, it said "Installing VCRedist step 1/2" and then finished and nothing happened, ie the game didn't start, the window just terminated and I was back in plain steam. :(
here's the console output

Someone wrote that this can be fixed by editing "production_Config.ini", setting borderless_windowed_fullscreen=false and fullscreen=true, but there are no *.ini files in my PoE installation.
RE: Installation without Steam also crashes

Oops, my bad. The location is given on this very page.
However, changing these options did not fix the crash.

My bad again, now I feel bad.
I forgot to set msvcp100 override to native. Works now, ow.

Gentoo users, help?
by Pekka Paalanen on Friday December 13th 2013, 14:34
I'm hitting the "Cannot create texture." D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE error too, and no matter what I tried, it won't go away. 32-bit mesa, osmesa and whatnot. This is not the first game, where other people (even on Gentoo) get it running, but I cannot.

Could a Gentoo user who got PoE running, put the output of the following commands available somewhere?
$ emerge --info
$ emerge -evp wine
$ winetricks list-installed

Note, that the output is probably too long to be pasted as a comment here.

Also the *.reg files from your $WINEPREFIX would be nice to see.

Thanks.
RE: Gentoo users, help?
by Pekka Paalanen on Sunday December 22nd 2013, 1:48
I got my D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE fixed. It was one of these two things that I did at the same time:

- I had Wine 1.7.8 contributor ebuild installed from Gentoo bugzilla, and now I installed the Wine 1.7.8 ebuild from Portage. There were slight differences between the two ebuilds for the same version of Wine, and I don't really think it was this.

- I installed 32-bit version of libtxc_dxtn. I suspect this made it work. Just enable the abi_x86_32 USE flag for media-libs/libtxc_dxtn and re-emerge it, so it installs both 32 and 64 bit libs.

Now I can actually start the game, and killed a couple of monsters already.

Btw. the rumours about needing 32-bit libOSMesa might be true too, but I already had that.
Chat window affects performance
by Silviu C. on Monday December 9th 2013, 15:33
I've found that disabling both trade chat and general chat will improve the performance of this game significantly. Easy to observe by pressing F1 while in game. FPS shot from 30-ish to over 100 on my GTX 660.

Can anyone else confirm this?
RE: Chat window affects performance
by seret on Wednesday December 11th 2013, 16:30
Yep, same here fps jumped from 30-ish to 60-ish on my HD6850 after disabling trade and general chat.
RE: Chat window affects performance
by Niclas Eriksen on Tuesday January 7th 2014, 11:01
This is also relevant on Windows. I get a 15-20fps drop whenever someone writes in chat and after some googling this seems like it's been an issue for years.
Strange Crash
by Mojo Troll on Monday November 11th 2013, 10:20
I just installed this using a pc version of steam and everything seemed to be running fine with it until a strange crash occurred where even launching my wine command through terminal (showed nothing only showed launch after it loaded) it just locks up and a transparent box appears on my screen titled Path of Exile and this happens every so often playing it so i'm thinking its a memory allocation crash. Anyone else have this?
Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects
by Drake on Wednesday October 23rd 2013, 23:54
When I try to launch I get the error "Failed resetting Direct3D device objects."

Anyone know what might cause this? Followed all of the steps listed.

The only thing worth mentioning is that I have almost every single version of DirectX installed because this is my Steam wrapper (lots of games with different requirements). Could this be causing the issues?

I'm on OS X 10.8.5
RE: Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects
by Drake on Thursday October 24th 2013, 0:03
Forgot to mention, it tries to install Direct X every time I boot the game from Steam. "Performing first time set up, installing Direct X" but it doesn't actually install anything (presumably because it's already installed).
RE: Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects
by Drake on Thursday October 24th 2013, 0:26
Finding the config.ini in (my computer's) Documents folder under "My Games" in "Path of Exile" and setting fullscreen to true causes this error to no longer be spit out.

After that, I get sound errors when launching. Launching with --nosound lets the game launch properly, but with no sound of course.
RE: Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects
by Bertus van Zyl on Tuesday February 25th 2014, 16:53
It's a steam thing, not linux. Just delete the .vcf file in your steam apps folder.
.vcf are install scripts for games first run, they are not always successfully deleted afterwards.

"Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects"
I had this error too consistantly even when changing the ini file to fullscreen and making a virtual desktop under wine 1.7

I removed wine 1.7 and installed 1.6, afterwards the game started right up with no issue.
RE: Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects
by StefanT on Saturday October 26th 2013, 7:54
Using a virtual desktop (enable via wine config) fixed it for me. I am on Linux, however.
RE: Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects
by andy m on Friday November 15th 2013, 11:05
I had to install the version of DirectX from "Path of Exile/Redist/dxsetup.exe" to get the game working. d3dx9_42 and others from winetricks did not seem to work any more (36 used to).
RE: Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects
by Sergej on Saturday February 1st 2014, 0:35
Confirm installing ./Redist/dxsetup.exe helping run the game.

Also confirming that installing the version in redist fixed the problem.
D3DERR_UNAVAILABLE
by tsimbaloff yuri on Sunday October 20th 2013, 16:40
Hi All!
I'm using gentoo64, and I saw error message after logging and loading the first location. I have seen in this site, that lib32osmesa is required to play PoE. I compile mesa with ABI_X86="64 32" and USE="osmesa", but game always crashed...

Can anybody help me with gentoo64 and PoE?

I solve the problem by re-compile mesa lib and some other's X libs.
how to fix msvcp and msvcr dll errors
by Joël on Wednesday July 17th 2013, 14:50
Today i couldn't run the game because of errors with these 'dll's.
It seems this game uses some 2010 year version of those MS files so you'll want the files with number 100 in filename.

And there's probably a winetricks command to make all this automagically but i didn't find which one it is.

So i downloaded msvcr100.dll and msvcp100.dll, i unzipped it in the game directory.
Then i added them as native in the library tab of winecfg (for Client.exe which i first added in the applications tab).

So far the game seems to be happy with only these 2 files.

Memory Problem

has anyone managed to figure out why the drops frames and seems to lag when new abilities or mobs are loaded in memory? I'm using wine version 1.5.28 with usp10 riched20 d3dx9_42 msvcr100 openal32 d3dcompiler_43.

openal32.dll
by eXpander on Thursday April 18th 2013, 17:41
How exactly do you "override" openal32.dll in winecfg? I cannot find it in my library list in winecfg? Do I have to install it somehow separately?
RE: openal32.dll
by Joël on Thursday July 18th 2013, 0:32
you just type openal32.dll in the field (library tab) and then set it to native.
the game provides the dll itself
Fonts
by Ferg on Thursday April 18th 2013, 0:44
To fix problem with fonts (like that ferg.in/storage/m2nGe6t3/) just move game to a new wine prefix (installer breaks something during installation)
RE: Fonts
by Tom Hackers on Saturday June 22nd 2013, 6:12
Got same problem, moving to different wine prefix makes game crash. Trying to figure out...
RE: Fonts
by Tom Hackers on Saturday June 22nd 2013, 6:20
Figured.
Apparently you (anyone who got fonts problem) need at least vcrun2010 and directx9 (d3dx9 does not the trick), and probably usp10.
Yet I still have some letters looking weird: "a'", "t'", "w'" and a few others.
RE: Fonts
by dimitri on Thursday August 22nd 2013, 15:35
Hi,

I installed the game the way you said, it's working correctly now.

But I encountered this font problem...I tried to install the game several times, and it's every time the same problem.

I don't understand your "just move game to a new wine prefix" solution. Could you explain how I could do that, please ?

thank you
Works awesome suace in Playonlinux.
by Damon on Wednesday April 17th 2013, 17:20
I couldn't get this working due to the allocating disk space bug, until I downloaded the new wine version entitled: 1.5.28-pathofexile. Now it works perfectly :)

ATI
by marcel on Tuesday March 12th 2013, 3:47
with ATI HD 4xxx game is unplayable with high FPS drops when using new skills. It's like they are loading when they are only being used. Because after you use them the FPS drops stop, and when something new is there it starts to lag again.

The problem was in missing offscreen rendering libs. For Archlinux its osmesa and lib32-osmesa packages.

Fps drops
by alex on Wednesday January 30th 2013, 11:42
There is a common problem causing huge fps drops (or even complete freezes for seconds) every time certain effects are loaded, especially when new boss monsters appear.

It has been reported by multiple users that this issue can very easily be fixed for nvidia cards by just disabling GLSL shaders. On Ati cards however this seems to cause major graphics glitches or crashes.

i have a problem with my ram path of exile after 20m loads up 3.2 gb of ram wtf??
and my fps always going crazy from 100 to 10 non-stop
i created a swap file cause my system was frezzing after POE for 20m
but still 3.2gb of ram for a game is much...

PS: FPS are crazy from the start of the game its not cause of the ram.

RE: Ram issue
by Drakier D on Thursday January 24th 2013, 13:53
Wine 1.5.6 is the version you want to use. 1.5.7 introduced a deserialization problem that was also in 1.5.8. Both of those versions do not have the memory leak problem.

1.5.9 introduced the memory leak problem that causes the crash after a while ingame. The more memory you have, the longer it will take to manifest the crash.

For best results, use 1.5.6

Open winecfg for a prefix u have PoE installed in. And add the openal32 library to a override list.
