What works

Everything tested*: Sound, Video, Act 1 content, Spell effects, Various video settings Connectivity

What does not

Memory leak causes game to crash or freeze after ~20m. I also ended with >3GB in swap before the crash. The leak was definitely affecting performance, likely due to heavy swapping (out of my 2GB of RAM). Lag for >6s also times out the connection to the server, so at times of heavy swapping I was occasionally disconnected. This correlated with loading new spell effects. Changing graphics settings made the game very grumpy. Often, the mouse-over coordinates of the UI no longer mapped to the display (the old mouse-over locations were still in effect, despite the display being resized, etc). Windowed-Fullscreen mode ended up behind the Gnome bars. Switching to Fullscreen mode alleviated this.

What was not tested

Later content. Many gem combinations. Many weapons, animations, etc. High end graphics were not tested extensively for performance reasons.

Additional Comments

Ubuntu 12.04 Wine 1.5.22 Intel Core2 Duo E8400 nVidia 8800 GT w/ binary blob v 295.40-0ubuntu1.2 2GB RAM I only had to install vcrun2010 and d3dx9_36. If I installed d3dx9_42, the game would crash. I have another prefix with d3dx9_42 which does not crash the game, but it is a very dirty prefix and I'm not sure what the difference is. Switching openal32 to native made the sound jumpy. Sound worked fine without this workaround, and nothing besides the memory issues ever crashed the game afaik. Installs SLOWLY. There is an "allocating space" portion of the install process which took hours on ext4. I raced an ext4 install and an NTFS (on a USB2 drive, no less), and the NTFS drive finished in ~25m, whereas I lost track of how many hours the ext4 install took. Comparison to PoL install: PoL appears to use some Wine 1.4 version for this game, and everything works (except for the good old ALSA/wine/pulseaudio issues). I thought I would mention performance on that install, just for reference. Performance: I sit at exactly 60fps with vsync on. I have all of the graphics settings turned all the way down, but I also have a fairly old computer, so .. :)

HowTo / Notes

Required fixes (as of 2014-08-07)
Set fullscreen
Edit the production_Config.ini file located in ${Documents}/My Games/Path of Exile/. Change fullscreen to true. This prevents the "Failed Resetting Direct3D device objects" crash.

Override openal32.dll:
In winecfg, set the openal32 library to native, builtin or native. This prevents errors involving sound files at launch.
Unconfirmed: An alternative is to launch Path of Exile with sound off with the -nosound flag.
Recommended fixes (as of 2014-08-07)
winetricks riched20.dll // for launcher
winetricks usp10.dll    // fix unicode missing symbols

Way smoother framerate now!

I haven't played POE in 6 months but with nVidia's latest 396.54 driver noted for producing significant overall performance boost to many benchmarks I thought I'd give POE a spin up as well.

It's night and day improvement! I can turn off all the nerf'ing switches now and all is sweet. Eg: It now loads to the login screen in a second, whereas this used to take maybe 30 seconds before the flame was animating smoothly and the login button would click easy. Also, similar, but not as dramatic, level loading speed improvement.

There has been many software updates to everything in that time period, including moving from Kubuntu 17.10 to 18.04.1 and POE and Wine updates too, so can't pin the improvement down to just graphics driver.

I have yet to test heavy battles where it used to get very jerky and near impossible to control the fight but my hopes are high ...
