Everything except e-file (however, this is not an issue because the file can be uploaded to their server independently).
What does not
E-file and the button to send your data via the browser ("Alternate Upload Site").
The normal e-file function fails while setting up the connection. This used to work several versions ago but has failed for the last 2-3 years (not sure why).
However, TaxACT's web site has a form that allows you to upload your electronic filing data (which is saved in a file on your disk in the "EFiles" directory. (The file name has a long string of alphanumerics with a .efr extension).
The SW has a button labeled "Alternate Upload Site" (or similar) which becomes available after e-file fails. This button normally loads the upload form in your (windows/wine) browser. However, in the 2011 version, it fails. I knew about the web form, however, from previous years. However, I couldn't find the URL anywhere. There were no references to it on the TaxACT web site nor any of the help text. Eventually, I found it in my Firefox history from last year. :) Here's the URL:
The SW normally replaces $PATH_TO_EFILE with the full path to the file containing the electronic filing data, however, if this URL is wrong it will prompt you to browse your disk for the correct file. I suspect (but haven't tested) that you could just omit the 'path' argument (delete "&path=" and everything that follows.
What was not tested
This test applies to both the free version and the deluxe version. These are both actually the same program (deluxe features are unlocked with a key). I initially experienced some of the issues reported by other testers (like the import function sending you to the help text) but I was eventually able to get it to work almost flawlessly. Even video appeared to work. I was able to successfully complete my taxes and submit them electronically. The trick for me was to create a wine prefix with win32 architecture and install ie6 (or ie8) with winetricks. I initially used ie6 and ran through my entire return (fed and two states) flawlessly. When the "Alternate Upload Site" button failed (urlmon.CreateUri) I tried installing ie7 (after reading that ie6's urlmon was incomplete and that ie7's may work okay). However, TaxACT did not run correctly with ie7. I then tried installing ie8. TaxACT appeared to run correctly with ie8 however it did not fix the upload/e-file issue and I did not run through the entire program with it. So, I would recommend using ie6 and manually upload your e-file data. I initially had problems getting a working win32 prefix under Fedora 16/64. It turned out that the problem was that the Fedora updater had installed both wine.i686 and wine.x86_64. The solution was to uninstall all wine packages and then reinstall ONLY wine.i686. I was then able to create a win32 prefix in the normal way. For those unfamiliar with creating wine prefixes (I was actually new to them) an important point seems to be that you should NOT create the empty dir before running winecfg. Let winecfg do it. (However, my trouble related to this may have been due to the dual-install issue.) # reinstall wine i686 only: $ sudo yum erase wine\* $ sudo yum install wine.i686 # create win32 prefix for taxact $ export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.taxact2011 $ export WINEARCH=win32 $ winecfg # install ie6 $ winetricks ie6 # install TaxACT $ wine ta11stdw.exe # or ta11stdw.exe
