What works

I managed to test the following

* Installer from CD (I have a USB CD-R reader here) and use it to install the game (No Origin, No cracks or customized setups)

* Completed 1st mission allied campaign

* Completed a skirmish mission

* Tested the load and saved games

The setup crashes AFTER the installer exists. But to be honest it doesn't matter because the setup still works!

What does not

Performance issues, this isn't obvious until you start a campaign
mission or skirmish. It starts to have cursor flicker issues then FPS
drops significantly enough to be unplayable.
However if you go to winecfg, configure the libraries to make sure
ddraw.dll loads native before built in, then download the ddraw wrapper
here http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper....
then configure it have ForceDirectDrawEmulation and NoVideoMemory set
to 1, performance and cursor flickering issues disappear. Now it works
just like what it used to be back in 2000s :)
I know this is somewhat a workaround but these issues exists on Windows as well (Later versions, like playing on modern Windows machine). The only difference it seems from Windows when it comes to this step is that NoVideoMemory is necessary otherwise you still get FPS and flickering issues.

My unit is a macbook air 2015 model by the way.

HowTo / Notes

Performance issues
The game is much slower than it should be, but it may still run at a good speed depending on your computer.

Speed Fix

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\game.exe\Direct3D]
"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"
"RenderTargetLockMode"="readtex"
  1. Create a new file, ra2fix.reg, somewhere in your Wine C: directory.
  2. Open the file, paste the content above into it, and save.
  3. run wine regedit and choose Registry->Import Registry File
  4. Import ra2fix.reg
  5. close regedit

If the game does not run correctly after these changes, remove them.

Add the following lines to ra2.ini:

[Video]
VideoBackBuffer=no

If the game does not run correctly after these changes,remove them.

Network Play

IPX is tricky, and is fortunately no longer needed. Someone has written a patch to use TCP/IP instead.
  1. Download the LAN patch from understorm.net
  2. Save it in your Red Alert 2 folder and extract it.
  3. Open winecfg or Wine->Configure Wine from the application menu.
  4. Add an overwrite rule for wsock32.

game freeze on load - possible solution
by hirschi on Sunday May 3rd 2015, 6:58
In case the game freezes about 1sec after loading/starting a mission (skirmish/campaign),
you may want to look at Bug33211 (see above),
in particular Post 11 (by meindertjan 2014-09-16).

Worked for me.
Wine doesn't shut down properly when exiting the game but whatever.

(dll-override--> "winecfg")
