What works

Everything that works in the older versions (6-8) works in this one too.  I have found that these perennial problems have also been fixed:

  • Toolbar - There is a new toolbar set with different graphical widgets, and they seem to work great!  You can actually see the icon bar now!  :)
  • Close Resources - Previously, I have not been able to close any of the extra resources once they opened.  For example, clicking on one of the Lexicon entries would open a separate window, but closing it would lock up Bibleworks, and I would have to restart it.  Closing works now for many (not all) of the resources!

I also verified that these functions work:

  • Basic bible verse searching, reading, and managing.
  • The new fourth column.
  • Flash cards.
  • Bibleworks map module.
  • Moody Bible maps - resize causes crash.
  • NET Bible maps.
  • Sentence Diagramming.

All in all, this is a nice step in the right direction.  Not everything works, like in Windows, but more works than does not.

What does not

The following things are broken.  Some of these are not new:

  • Scrolling backwards - scrolling  backwards distorts the text.  However, highlighting (selecting) almost any portion of the text that is distorted will force a refresh and fix the text.
  • Closing "Getting Started" Window - You can close the window by clicking on the window's big X button, but the internal "Close Window" button does nothing, and deselecting the "Show this window on startup" is ignored.
  • Maximizing and Resizing Resource Windows - Some resource windows, when maximized or resized, cause Bibleworks to immediately crash (Windows Program Error).  You learn which ones and simply avoid them.
  • CNTTS NT Critical Apparatus - It thinks that Bibleworks9 is not installed or registered.  :(  Many of the CHM based resources have this problem.

Additional Comments

I installed Bibleworks 9 in a fresh wine container, and it worked fine, except it complained of missing the English keyboard, and most of the text was in Greek, Egyptian, or some other strange language. Using winetricks, I installed most of the basic fonts, and the problem went away. Incidentally, I also configured wine to pose as Windows 7, not Windows XP.
