What works

Nearly Everything:

  • Menu
  • Graphics
  • Sound
  • Savegames
  • Cutscenes
  • UpgradeLauncher.exe (for Updates)

What does not

  • Camera Movement: see Bug 14025 - Workaround (at least partly) available
  • Graphic Issues when moving the Camera (wrong shadows and flickering) - no Workaround
  • Graphic Issues in Combat (heavy flickering on the window borders) - no Workaround

  • Workaround for Camera Movement:
    • 1. Use the classic Camera (Options->Graphics and Audio->Camera Option-Field), this way you can not move the camera
    • 2. Edit the "input.cfg"-Files in the " ->profiles"-Folder and change the values to:
    • bindconfigure MOUSE_AXIS_X 90
      bindconfigure MOUSE_AXIS_Y 90
              bindconfigure MOUSE_AXIS_Z 1160

    • The second workaround sadly only lets you move the camera, but does not fix the maximum camera height issue (see comment 18 on Bug 14025) and the flickering and wrong shadows when you move the camera.

What was not tested

  • Multiplayer
  • I did not play the full campaign(s)

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: open source

What libraries, library overrides and winetricks are you using? I installed the GOG version, and it won't launch out-of-the-box. It shows the splash screen, then a black screen and then it hanged. There are errors regarding d3d, for example. The one about "query type 0x4" repeated until I killed the process.

Trying to launch the 5.5 mod had pretty much the same result, except it closed instead of throwing those errors in repeat.

For future reference, I got it to work. I installed couple of libraries at random, and then tried to start the game exe from the bin directory. I don't know if the libraries did anything, but this seems to be one of those programs which goes nuts if it's not started from the right directory, and I guess that's worth noting.
patch required at least for nvidia owners, maybe some others

This game has been unplayable in wine for years, I am amazed to see some people could have a gold status with it.
It becomes choppy and extremely slow sometimes as soon as a mission starts, but it happens quickly in all the cases.
The solution is to use wine-pba, there :

In gentoo this can be easily used by creating the directory /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/wine-staging-3.13
and symlink the patches there, they will be applied when you install wine-staging-3.13, and it works wonderfully well !
Finally the game is playable !
