What works

Game loads in full screen; with alt+ent can be switched to windowed mode. Audio works, no problems. The NIVAL and UBI credits displayed fine.

Installation

What libraries, library overrides and winetricks are you using? I installed the GOG version, and it won't launch out-of-the-box. It shows the splash screen, then a black screen and then it hanged. There are errors regarding d3d, for example. The one about "query type 0x4" repeated until I killed the process. pastebin.com/Z4MQwRSs

Trying to launch the 5.5 mod had pretty much the same result, except it closed instead of throwing those errors in repeat.

For future reference, I got it to work. I installed couple of libraries at random, and then tried to start the game exe from the bin directory. I don't know if the libraries did anything, but this seems to be one of those programs which goes nuts if it's not started from the right directory, and I guess that's worth noting.
patch required at least for nvidia owners, maybe some others

This game has been unplayable in wine for years, I am amazed to see some people could have a gold status with it.
It becomes choppy and extremely slow sometimes as soon as a mission starts, but it happens quickly in all the cases.
The solution is to use wine-pba, there :

github.com/acomminos/wine-pba

In gentoo this can be easily used by creating the directory /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/wine-staging-3.13
and symlink the patches there, they will be applied when you install wine-staging-3.13, and it works wonderfully well !
Finally the game is playable !
