What works

Collector's Edition bonus and DLC install; entire single player campaign; "From Ashes" DLC; multiplayer; bonus soundtrack

What does not

Install using Origin hangs at 99%; Installing both the (main game) day-1 patch and DLC patch does fail with "there was a problem while updating" error; autodetecting the optimal screen resolution during the first start fails with a "unsupported" message and reverts to 800x600

Additional Comments

Install hanging is not Mass Effect 3 specific, solution is to manually kill EAProxyinstaller.exe; To update, first try do it from Origin (which will fail), then search for the errors "[11] CoreDownloadJob_DiPUpdate::Finalize() - File could not be renamed to final name!" in C:\users\Public\Application Data\Origin\Logs\Client_Log.html and delete those files manually (shell/sed knowledge will come handy), then update inside Origin again. Tested in 1920x1080 using Nvidia GTX 460, x86_64 proprietary driver 295.20.

HowTo / Notes

Origin Difficulties
Origin has its own entry in AppDB, located here: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=13176 Please note any difficulties that are specific to Origin there.
How to check the version number
Before filing test data, make sure that you know what version of the game you're running. This you can find out from running the Mass Effect 3 configuration utility. People who pre-ordered a digital edition of the game got version 1.01 on release, not version 1.0.
Increasing in-game performance
Increasing in-game performance

If you have experienced performance degradation please deactivate dynamic shadows and antialiasing from game graphic menu. Also set proprietary driver image settings to Maximum Performance. This helps for weak graphic cards like NVIDIA Geforce 120 GT.

Please note - If your mouse/keyboard isn't working then it's most likely a rawinput issue, please upgrade your wine to at least version 1.6 since wine has had rawinput built into it for about 12 minor releases now.

If you have mouse and in-game lags, set dinput to native in winecfg - Libraries tab
In some cases sound disappeared, it can be fixed by setting dsound to native as above.
If you have poor performance in multiplayer, set winhttp to native as above.

Fixing game crashes
Workaround for game crashes when it started from Origin

Do not start game directly from Origin Client! It crashed anytime if you do it.

1. Firstly run Origin, login into it

2. Then run Mass Effect 3 from shortcut on the desktop (or executable file)

3. Start Multiplayer and Enjoy!

To disable PhysX support
by Ryan on Monday August 7th 2023, 0:02
I was having a torrid time trying to run Mass Effect 3 with open-source drivers, as every version of PhysX I would install would give me an error about incorrect PhysX. I tried reinstalling several times, but I finally managed to launch and play it successfully by disabling PhysX hardware support.

To disable hardware PhysX support, you still must either install a PhysX runtime that includes v2.8.3 (archive.org/download/PhysX9.13.1220SystemSoftware ), or you must copy the following files from an existing PhysX v2.8.3 installation to the [game installation]/Binaries/Win32 directory: PhysXCooking.dll, PhysXCore.dll, PhysXDevice.dll, PhysXLoader.dll, cudart32_41_4.dll

Then, with a tool that can edit Mass Effect 3's convoluted Coalesced.bin file, you must set the "bdisablephysxhardwaresupport" setting in the "engine.engine" section of the "..\..\biogame\config\bioengine.ini" file to "True". I wrote such a tool at: gitlab.com/game-toolkits/mass-effect.git . Or there is Gibbed's classic editor at: github.com/gibbed/Gibbed.MassEffect3 .
try wine 1.7.1
by Carlo Marchiori on Tuesday September 3rd 2013, 16:09
I would suggest to try wine 1.7.1. Compare to wine 1.5, the last version offers a much better graphics performance. I can play ME3 in full resolution.

Just take the following measures:

- Disable IM in wine as shown in BUG 34367
- Disable Origin in game because the overlay makes ME3 crash.
Crash on start
by rkfg on Monday July 8th 2013, 14:19
For all those who can't play ME3 anymore due to crash on startup (after the logo) here's the simple and stupid solution: social.bioware.com/forums/forum/1/topic/344/index/9324171/9#13680315

Yep, just rename or delete IGO32.dll and the game will start and work fine! As I guess it's "In-Game Overlay". Months ago it was sufficient to disable the overlay in Origin but after several updates it seems that it loads it regardless and causes the crash. Found it looking at the traceback which started like this:

Unhandled exception: privileged instruction in 32-bit code (0xf6a72939).

It's strange to have a privileged instruction exception *inside* wine (opengl32 can't belong to the game) but I've googled this anyway and found nothing. Igo32 went next and I've found the solution mentioned earlier. It definitely messes on the very low level with libraries and hooking rendering functions to show itself on top of the game (though I've never seen it), no wonder it crashes the game.

Win 1.5.7 Crash NV 320M
by varenique on Monday June 25th 2012, 8:45
I have 100% crash at some places of the game. Strangely, I haven't experienced any of them until this missions (Eden Prime, Tuchanka and some more). When one of this missions starts, the sound stops and the game immediately crashes. I'm trying to fight this crashes the whole day, but no result. Tried different versions of Wine, different winetricks etc. Don't know if I can do more than that...

MBP 7.1, Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Sorry for any misspelling.

Game won't install, stuck at 99%
by stefo11 on Wednesday May 2nd 2012, 3:18
Hi all,
i can't install the game, the installation process is stuck at 99% both installing from DVD and copying the "Origin Games" entry for ME3 from a windows installation and trying to repair it.
I can't figure out how to solve this problem..thanks for any help!
RE: Game won't install, stuck at 99%

There may be a process called "InstallerProxy" or something like that (can't really recall ATM).
Kill it after the installation has been at 99% long enough, and the installation will complete fine.
I can't recall if you need to restart Origin or not after you do that though, but killing it will sufice nevertheless.

This happened with an older release of wine to me, installing through origin (I don't have a DVD, sorry).

Game successfully installed, thanks!
(now i'm stuck at the update part lol, using the appropriate topic)

It was called EAProxyInstaller on mine.

Yes, that's it. I was typing from memory and had no real way of finding out exactly what it was called.
Impossible to Update
by Berillions on Thursday April 26th 2012, 14:10
Hi,

I bought the DVD version of game, i can install it without problem but i can do the update. I have always an error message at the end.

If i read the test create by ylai, he recommand to delete the files manually which have this error : "[11] CoreDownloadJob_DiPUpdate::Finalize() - File could not be renamed to final name!

I did it but i have always this f*cking error. I need help :(

Thanks

Might be similar to the problem I had, are you sure you got all the files? check out my test results for the issue I had. Of course this might have changed since I got the game but I highly doubt it.
RE: Impossible to Update
by Berillions on Thursday April 26th 2012, 14:44
Hu Maquis196,

When the update fail i must to go to the game folder and i delete which files ?

In your test, you said that :
If I delete the original file (MassEffect3.exe for exemple) and I rename the other file (MassEffect3.exe_STAGED, i haven't the exact name), i delete the update, right ?
RE: Impossible to Update
by Maquis196 on Thursday April 26th 2012, 14:48
From memory the problem is that the _STAGED file is the downloaded update but the way ea have done it is not linux compatible.

So by deleting say MassEffect3.exe and then renaming the staged file to the exact filename you've just delete then youve deleted the original and deployed the update. You'll find youve missed a couple probably unless you do;

find . -type f -iname "*STAGED"

If you run validate install, youll soon know if you've got them all.
RE: Impossible to Update
by stefo11 on Wednesday May 2nd 2012, 13:06
I'm having the same issue, i've finally managed to install the game but i can't run it since i can't update it.
The update is stuck at 100% with a message like "Cannot update, some files are already in use [...] Try rebooting the computer and resuming the update"
I've removed every _DiP_STAGED file (btw, i've written a very simple python script to do such purpose, if someone else needs it here it is:

#!/usr/bin/python

import shutil

f = open("file")
for line in f:
print "Renaming "+line
shutil.move(line.rstrip(), line.rstrip().rstrip("_DiP_STAGED"))
print "Done"

where the file "file" is the output of the command
find . -type f -iname "*STAGED" > file
the script should be launched in the Mass Effect 3 folder or in any parent folder.

So, i'm pretty sure every file has been removed.
This seems to have no impact on the update: if i restart origin it simply restarts the update from scratch, downloading the 45MB update and getting stuck at the end with the same message.

I've searched the log for the "[11] CoreDownloadJob_DiPUpdate::Finalize() - File could not be renamed to final name!" entry but there's nothing in it. The closest thing i find in my log is: "[68] CoreDownloadJob_DiPUpdate::Finalize() - File could not be renamed to final name!: Binaries/Win32/Core/EAProxyInstaller.exe; GetLastError: 183 ", it's almost the same, isn't it?

Maybe i've not understood what do i have to do exactly with these files..? I've tried many combos, launching the script without closing origin, closing origin launching the script and starting origin again etc., the result is almost every time the same: the update restarts from scratch..
I really can't figure out what the problem is..
Thanks for any help!
RE: Impossible to Update
by Masked One on Wednesday June 27th 2012, 0:41
I did a search with Dolphin and found all the STAGED files. Replaced them and it just restarts the update. Any solution for this yet? Assuming someone has gotten it working considering the platinum rating here...

RE: DirectX problem
by Maquis196 on Wednesday April 11th 2012, 4:27
That is strange, so far no one has reported having to install directx. I noticed a lot of r600's in your output of your next comment.

Can we just confirm that youre an ATI user and that other direct3d games work okay?

I'd install me3 in a clean prefix as well if possible.
RE: DirectX problem
by alice232 on Wednesday April 11th 2012, 12:04
yea, I use ati radeon HD 5650
and I just recently using opensuse
so this is the first game I ever tested,
I think maybe it's caused of I installed wrong driver, but I'm not sure about that *never use linux before
RE: DirectX problem
by Maquis196 on Wednesday April 11th 2012, 12:13
Ah welcome then :). As for ATI, I really don't know which driver must be used to provide all the 3d support. For testing if direct3d works I'd install a demo like;

projectmagma.net/what/

Try the linux version to see if opengl is working. Then run the windows version to make sure direct3d is working.

A good habit to get into is to use prefixes for wine, so I'd do this;

mkdir ~/wine_games
WINEPREFIX=~/wine_games/myth2_test wine myth2.exe

that way each game can have it's own prefix and settings wont conflict with each other.

Let us know how the above goes. We'll go from there

The catalyst drivers needs to be used; the open-source won't work recente games (like ME3).
IIRC, Suse uses the open-source on by default.
RE: DirectX problem
by alice232 on Thursday April 12th 2012, 8:57
I tried in linux, it's worked(just tested several second, command the unit)
but when I tried in windows it didn't work
the new game just show until the loading/story
and when I click the tutorial it just didn't work...
RE: DirectX problem
by alice232 on Thursday April 12th 2012, 9:25
update: direct 3D and software work
but openGL not work
RE: DirectX problem
by alice232 on Thursday April 12th 2012, 9:29
@hugo : err, can you tell me which one I should download ??
I download verification tool and Catalyst Software Suite, nothing happened....
RE: DirectX problem
by Hugo Osvaldo Barrera on Thursday April 12th 2012, 15:40
This might help:
lizards.opensuse.org/2012/03/30/amdati-fglrx-8-951-catalyst-12-3-rpms-available-for-opensuse-12-2-12-1-11-4-11-3/

I don't use either ATI or Suse, so I can't really help much more than that. All I really know is that you need to use catalyst instead of radeaon (they're the propietary and free drive respectivly).

You might need the 32bit utils as well, since ME3 is 32bit.
RE: DirectX problem
by alice232 on Friday April 13th 2012, 3:38
I cannot download from your link
but I found fglrx_xpic_SUSE121 ver.8.951-1(it's probably same file)
it make my PC become laggy and disable my connection...

do you mean wine-32bit ?? yeah, I already installed it
RE: DirectX problem
by Hugo Osvaldo Barrera on Friday April 13th 2012, 4:05
Nope; I meant the catalyst-utils32. Again, I don't use ATI so I'm not 100% sure, but when it comes to the nvidia driver, I need the "nvidia-utils32" packages for 32bit games to work with it. I'm sure this probably applies to ATI as well.

It's not just AMD issue, i'm experiencing the same problem with my NVIDIA GT 440 in Debian Sid x64 with nvidia x86 libs installed. Installing vcrun2008, directx didn't help.
Install Origin
by phreekbird on Friday March 16th 2012, 7:00
Do not install Origin from the dvd ... I ended up getting the infamous "You must have administrator privileges" error when trying to install the game. However I was able to download and install Origin from the site, and then install the game via the ISO files I created (inside the XP VM on Virtualbox) just fine.
RE: Install Origin
by Maquis196 on Monday March 19th 2012, 18:56
You must have hit another problem with origin. I installed origin off the DVD and it went fine.

From memory, the dvd installed origin, and then origin updated to latest copy and then installation went fine until the 99% stuck problem.

Still have an issue with installing Battlefield 3 though with that error. Ill save that for a different forum though :)

Any workaround for the administrator privileges problem? I've installed origin from the site but i still having this issue..

Merging versions
by Maquis196 on Saturday March 10th 2012, 6:33
From what I can see of origin, it's like buying games on retail dvd for steam. The only bonus is that you don't have to download it and can install it from dvd but it all goes into your account.

I think however you buy it, until it's out on steam or on gog.com in about 10yrs then we might as well have the one version since theyre all origin :)
ATI HD5870 crash
by Samuel on Friday March 9th 2012, 15:31
The game seems to freeze with a checked screen a few seconds into running on Ubuntu 11.10. I've installed Phyx as well as DirectX (from winetricks). When it loads I can hear sounds for about a second then the sound stops (the point where I guess it crashes). Terminal output ends with

The last entry comes a few seconds after the crash. Also I am running the ME3 file from my Windows NTFS partition in an effort to save space. This hasn't caused problems with games in the past but may be worth mentioning.
