HowTo / Notes

Origin Difficulties
Origin has its own entry in AppDB, located here: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=13176 Please note any difficulties that are specific to Origin there.
How to check the version number
Before filing test data, make sure that you know what version of the game you're running. This you can find out from running the Mass Effect 3 configuration utility. People who pre-ordered a digital edition of the game got version 1.01 on release, not version 1.0.
Increasing in-game performance
Increasing in-game performance

If you have experienced performance degradation please deactivate dynamic shadows and antialiasing from game graphic menu. Also set proprietary driver image settings to Maximum Performance. This helps for weak graphic cards like NVIDIA Geforce 120 GT.

Please note - If your mouse/keyboard isn't working then it's most likely a rawinput issue, please upgrade your wine to at least version 1.6 since wine has had rawinput built into it for about 12 minor releases now.

If you have mouse and in-game lags, set dinput to native in winecfg - Libraries tab
In some cases sound disappeared, it can be fixed by setting dsound to native as above.
If you have poor performance in multiplayer, set winhttp to native as above.

Fixing game crashes
Workaround for game crashes when it started from Origin

Do not start game directly from Origin Client! It crashed anytime if you do it.

1. Firstly run Origin, login into it

2. Then run Mass Effect 3 from shortcut on the desktop (or executable file)

3. Start Multiplayer and Enjoy!

The game crashes or launch?
by rkfg on Saturday September 28th 2013, 6:19
Here's the secret: rename or delete IGO32.dll in Origin's directory. It doesn't matter for me now and the game starts just fine after disabling the In-Game Overlay (that's what IGO stands for) but a couple of months before ME3 crashed right after the video intro sequence with the overlay DISABLED in settings and that confused me. After some googling I've found this solution on EA's forums. Give it a try, renaming won't break anything irreversibly. Maybe Origin didn't respect this option and tried to load this very intrusive library no matter what. Maybe it was something in Wine.
Try wine 1.7.1
by Carlo Marchiori on Tuesday September 3rd 2013, 16:10
I would suggest to try wine 1.7.1. Compare to wine 1.5, the last version offers a much better graphics performance. I can play ME3 in full resolution.

Just take the following measures:

- Disable IM in wine as shown in BUG 34367
- Disable Origin in game because the overlay makes ME3 crash.

freeze
by Carlo Marchiori on Monday August 26th 2013, 16:49
I'm playing Mass Effect 3 on a

Hardware 64bit
Card Radeon Cedar
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CEDAR
Debian Jessie/Sid testing distribution
Wine 1.5.7

I've played the game for many days quite flawlessy and I've reached the point I'm seizing Cerberus Headquarters. Recently I've noticed some temporary freezes, and now a complete freeze. I cannot play the game beyond this point.

In the log I find errors such as

err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x110060 "heap.c: main process heap section" wait timed out in thread 0055, blocked by 0066, retrying (60 sec)
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7bcadc24 "loader.c: loader_section" wait timed out in thread 0066, blocked by 005a, retrying (60 sec)

It's quite sad not being able to finish the game at this point!!!
fps
by Carlo Marchiori on Wednesday August 14th 2013, 16:09
The game plays at incredibly low fps, not more than 10fps,
possible?

If run glxgears (disabling vsync) I get to more than 2000fps.

I have a Radeon HD 54xx card.
I use native radeon driver with Gallium CEDAR 0.4.
OpenGL is the mesa implementation.

At the initial welcome screen when you see asteroids falling to the right, this the fps that I get

trace:fps:glxdrv_SwapBuffers @ approx 9.72fps, total 9.03fps

successfully installed
by Carlo Marchiori on Monday August 5th 2013, 13:34
The game works for me on

wine 1.5.8
Origin
downloading manually the game zip
Importing data about the game in regedit as described elsewere

The rendering is a bit limping,
I'm looking around for hints about how to improve it.
RE: successfully installed
by Carlo Marchiori on Thursday August 8th 2013, 17:37
I managed to vastly improve performances by installing the fglrx proprietary ati radeon driver (I have a 5xxx Mobility Radeon card).

Yet, in this configuration, in the gnome shell and in fullscreen, the game does not receive keyboard events.

The same problem does not surface running gnome in fallback mode, so it appears to be linked to the interaction between wine, the window manager and the display driver.

Best, Carlo.
mass effect 3 perfect install
by Andrew Aladjev on Sunday July 8th 2012, 14:47
Today I was picking origin all day. I can confirm that last origin (8.6.0.357) cant proper install and update mass effect 3 even on any windows (I've tested on xp, 7 and 8). Tech support know about such problems but it can help only with installing old version of origin (8.4), but in this version game updates wont work. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON ORIGIN!

1. buy game. developers of mass effect 3 have created real cool game and they are not blame that the executive director invent this origin
2. install last wine and winetricks (wine-9999 and winetricks-99999999 in gentoo)
3. unpack game
// insert 1 dvd
cp /mnt/cdrom/Mass\ Effect\ 3.z01 ~/temp/Mass\ Effect\ 3.z01
// insert 2 dvd
cp /mnt/cdrom/Mass\ Effect\ 3.zip ~/temp/Mass\ Effect\ 3.zip
cd ~/temp
zip -FF Mass\ Effect\ 3.zip --out Mass\ Effect\ 3.zip.fixed
mkdir Mass\ Effect\ 3
unzip -d Mass\ Effect\ 3/ Mass\ Effect\ 3.zip.fixed
du --total Mass\ Effect\ 3
>> 10466048 (~10.5 GB => success)
4. check that WINEARCH=win32 and make new WINEPREFIX
5. winecfg
Graphics -> Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows
Graphics -> Emulate a virtual desktop (preffered full screen size)
6. winetricks physx
7. rsync -r --progress ~/temp/Mass\ Effect\ 3 $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/Program\ Files/
8. google for "mass effect 3 reloaded 1.3" and apply the crack with last patch (just in case block the network for cracked binaries)
9. wine Binaries/MassEffectConfig
ignore the message "you do not have the correct version of directx installed to play this game"
select full-screen option. select other options according to your wishes
10. check that you have ~/BioWare/Mass\ Effect\ 2/Save/ to import character from ME2
11. wine Binaries/Win32/MassEffect
enjoy the game ^____^
RE: mass effect 3 perfect install
by Maquis196 on Monday July 9th 2012, 6:19
Good stuff...

ME3 not being on Steam is stupid greedy EA for you. Shame that, steam works damn near perfectly and origin as you say is the biggest lump of privacy invading rubbish.

Again, good guide.
From Ashes DLC DRM
by William on Saturday March 31st 2012, 20:09
Running Ubuntu 11.04 with wine 1.4 rc4.

I own the the Digital deluxe edition via Origin, Origin was installed via playonlinux.

Every time I start up the game, it tells me that my From Ashes DLC couldn't be verified and to log into the Alliance Network with the account I used to buy From Ashes.

All other DLC works, and I can play multiplayer.
Fullscreen mode not working
by Roel on Sunday March 25th 2012, 19:05
Hello all,

I installed the game successfully, but have 1 big problem; fullscreen mode won't work right.

My desktop resolution is changed to the correct (game set) resolution, but the screen itself has really thick black borders, and shows only part of the game (about one quarter). When I run the game in a virtual desktop, it works fine (even the fullscreen mode, which is then obviously not full screen anymore).

Can anybody point me to a way of getting this game to run fullscreen.
RE: Fullscreen mode not working
by Xpander on Wednesday March 28th 2012, 8:45
change the game settings from masseffectconf.exe file
and change the resolution to same as your desktop one..
works fine then
if u have dualmonitor setup, then use the metamodes to switch one screen off before you start the game and u can keyboard shortcut it back after game is launched with correct resolution.
Mouse jumping with xorg-server 1.12
by Johannes S. on Saturday March 24th 2012, 8:19
Can anyone confirm input problems with the new xorg-server?
I have "xorg-server-1.12" and "xf86-input-evdev-2.7.0" and my aim in ME3 jumps around wildly.

I am using wine 1.5.0 but also tested 1.4.

After a downgrade to xorg-server-1.11 and xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0 it worked again.
RE: Mouse jumping with xorg-server 1.12
by Maquis196 on Saturday March 24th 2012, 16:20
Might be worth doing a bug report for it? I can see from my gentoo install that it wants to upgrade to 1.12 but I might give it a miss now you've said that!

Thanks for heads up!
RE: Mouse jumping with xorg-server 1.12
by Johannes S. on Saturday March 24th 2012, 16:49
Can you please try it?
Its no big deal going back in gentoo anyway. I am on Gentoo too.

I didnt want to do a bug report before ruling out plain stupidity on my part. So if anyone confirms this, I will make one,
RE: Mouse jumping with xorg-server 1.12
by Maquis196 on Saturday March 24th 2012, 17:57
Well I'm having a few issues actually getting the game to run at all. The game will sometimes load but only show the first video intro and then pause halfway through it, onlyway to recover is to kill the entire wineserver.

Every other time it's just crashing before it loads that up. Not happy. Let me look into this (I updated to latest xorg as well so curious to see what's going on).

Oh, did you re-emerge your nvidia drivers as well? I want to assume you did but better check
RE: Mouse jumping with xorg-server 1.12
by Maquis196 on Saturday March 31st 2012, 6:57
I've seen this issue in other games, so far Tomb Raider Underworld and Skyrim.

I'll get a bug report going
RE: Mouse jumping with xorg-server 1.12
by Johnathan Langley on Monday September 24th 2012, 17:47
I found that the Steam overlay in Skyrim was causing some serious issues with the mouse, so I disabled it. Also turn off your numlock in order to rebind keys. 1.5.11 and on have had nothing but issues with, so sticking with wine 1.5.10 (works perfectly smooth)

Cheers!

Hmm... Yeah... ever since I updated to wine 1.4 this morning the game always crashes on start up. How are you getting wine? I wonder if it's a bad build or something.
RE: Game Crashes on Startup
by Colten Long on Saturday March 17th 2012, 23:15
The game wouldn't even come close when I tried using my old Wine v1.3 so I first tried building v1.4 from source and then from the Ubuntu repository. No luck either way.

Try winetricks vcrun2008
RE: Game Crashes on Startup
by Joe on Sunday March 18th 2012, 13:48
Just tried it now, still crashes on startup. Now the backtrace points to d3d9, other times it points to kernel32. This is all for a game that was working perfectly fine for me until I updated to 1.4.0.
RE: Game Crashes on Startup
by Colten Long on Sunday March 18th 2012, 22:14
I also tried uninstalling vcrun2008 and reinstalling it and I too got the d3d9 error. I tried adding that library to winecfg and it still crashed.
RE: Game Crashes on Startup

Found a possible fix here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/344/index/9671154/1

Seems like it's a problem on native too. It worked for me. Let us know if it works for you too.
RE: Game Crashes on Startup
by Colten Long on Sunday March 18th 2012, 22:18
When I looked for the file, I found that I had one that was over 900 kB. I tried deleting it and that didn't fix it. I may try copying the "Local_Profile.sav" from my (working) Windows laptop, but I doubt that will fix it as it didn't even recreate the file after I deleted it and tried the game again.

Oops, that was the wrong link. I meant to post this one, which suggests replacing some of the Origin files with new ones.

Did you mean help.ea.com/mx/article/mass-effect-3-pc-crashing-issue? I tried it too and it still doesn't work. I'm getting what seems to be a d3d9 error of some sort.

Have you tried (on a new prefix) installing vcrun2008 and trying with the settings as both native, builtin and then builtin, native.

Were having an issue on eve online right now where patching requires one thing and running the game requires the other so worth a go. I can't do much more to diagnose since it works here.

The fact you are on nvidia as well makes me curious to what it could be.

So, I tried to install ME3 via the disk, via download, inside wine, inside a VM w/ XP sp3 on Virtual Box, nothing worked. I couldn't get the game to install or download.

Eventually I created ISO's using Brasero and attached them to my VM, then installed the game that way. Copied everything over into Wine 1.4 and it works great.
