What works

What I tried, and can confirm works:

  • Level adjustments
  • Image or canvas scaling
  • Paint brushes
  • Canvas zooming - with minor annoying glitch -
  • Selection tools
  • Blur tools
  • Layers
  • A few of the transformation tools
  • Other features...

What does not

Glitches during zooming in or out of the image canvas, aka back frames during scaling.  I couldn't find a workaround for this annoying issue

No means to update - with the updates available - using the adobe extension manager.

Workarounds

I installed from a CD with the serial key. The installer worked for photoshop, illustrator, indesign, bridge and fireworks from the adobe CS6 installer. Acrobat pro was the only application that failed to install.

To use the installer you must use winetricks and add support for: atmlib allfonts gdiplus msxml3 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 d3dx9 flash.

I recommend using the gui version of winetricks rather than the command line version, for some reason I was initially having issues where msxml3 and vcrun2008 wouldn't install on a 64bit wineprifix.

What was not tested

A few advanced features:

  • The paint brush was more ridged on the edges using a hard brush, haven't tried with different dpi or font smoothing.
  • any advanced color profile or clipping tools
  • any advanced Print features
  • any of the pattern creation tools - but I'd bet they'd work -
  • any of the brush creation tools - but I'd bet they'd work -
  • any of the 3D features - never saw the point of them any ways, go use blender or equivalent software if you want this -
  • any of the animation features - Again there is better software for this, go try opentoonz or better software -
  • any of the artistic filters
  • the smart layers
  • smart layer compatibility with illustrator on wine.
  • Other features....

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

I give it between a silver or a gold rating, but keep in mind I was able to install photoshop, illustrator, indesign, bridge, and fireworks all at once using the installer with most things working out of the box...

I even managed to get the adobe extension manager installed only it wasn't automatically pulling in the available updates to install for cs6 and instead links to the CC extension page online now.

Updating the instructions
by Larina Loriasel on Monday July 24th 2023, 8:11
Hello, I am a new linux user and recently I tried running PS CS6 under WINE via following this winehq page's instructions

PS CS6 did install, but I had no 3D Acceleration and it was a buggy experience

I have tried different versions, distros and DE's but the issues persist

sudonull.com/post/6539-Turn-on-GPU-acceleration-in-Photoshop-for-Wine

However, I recently found this article and I think it might be worth adding to the winehq page, I will be trying this shortly and post my results in a reply
ClientSideGraphics

Setting ClientSideGraphcs, Managed, and Decorated registry flags to N resolves many of the graphical problems with this program.

(Splash screen shows transparent overlay instead of black border, "Save to Web" dialog does not flicker when tooltips display, etc.)

See also:

wiki.winehq.org/Useful_Registry_Keys

In the X11 Driver section.

Setting these may have undesirable effects for other applications in that prefix, so I suggest keeping this application in a prefix all to itself, with these flags set.

Tested on WINE 3.0 (Xubuntu 18.04) with 64bit prefix and suggested winetricks, using intel integrated graphics.

this was helpful for me also, but didn't change Managed because it prevented the app to appear in the task manager

Open Source Graphics vs Blobs
by Electric Prism on Sunday June 5th 2016, 22:48
It seems like it runs better on Intel Open Graphics Driver whereas it runs worse on nVidia blob even though it's just integrated HD Skylake Graphics vs a GTX 970.

I'm beginning to wonder if it works better on AMDGPU, Intel Open Graphics and other Open Drivers.

What differences due you see between the two video cards?

Intel freezes up less and can run 1gb files. The guides still dont show right after placing. This weird yellow tooltip also stays stuck on the screen still and sometimes file operations like save freeze when doing 1gb files @ 4k resolution.

Nvidia just struggles and locks up more on Arch wine staging using the blob. I never expected usability and stability to improve but it has on open Intel drivers.

OK, thanks for the info.

Also, you mentioned that the 'guides are weird'. If there isn't a bug filed for that it might be worth to add it.
PS CS6 on Wine 1.8
by Richard Baláž on Tuesday December 22nd 2015, 9:26
So,
I had problems with installation since it always failed. I was experiencing similar problems after installation.

This winetricks line helped to install & to launch:
$ winetricks -q atmlib gdiplus msxml3 msxml6 vcrun2005 vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 ie6 fontsmooth-rgb gecko

After that I was able to launch successfully only 32-bit version.
PS works quite good, but drawing tools are still not working properly. And that's sad. Also, after first start PS noticed me that something is wrong with graphics acceleration (I have Intel HD 4400). But other things seems to be working and it is stable.

Richard.

Brush DOTS workaround
by Max S. on Tuesday February 10th 2015, 20:26
Currently running Photoshop CS6 under Wine 1.7.34 on Mint.
I too have experienced issues where some tools will not properly draw when holding the mouse down. Sometimes I can draw squiggles, sometimes it's just a dot.

Thankfully I found a workaround to this issue in tool options.
Simply turn off 'Spacing' for each drawing tool (Brush, Eraser, Pencil, etc). After that, dots should be no more.

This solution may work on older Photoshops.

Please see: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2210503

Quick fix for those dots & lines is to use older wine version, which is originally used in POL: 1.7.46-stagging
