What works

All basic functions: Registration, Ledger entries, Multiple accounts, Update multiple accounts online from banks, File conversion/upgrade from 2009 format to 2012 format, Reports / Graphs, Account Reconciliation with statements

What does not

Dialog boxes appear behind them main window and are inaccessible. This makes it look like the application has hung. Simple workaround: check the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option in Wine-->Configure Wine. (Thanks "AlwaysGirl"). Note that for me the virtual desktop only appears if I run it from the command line. Clicking on a menu shortcut to launch it fails to open it in the emulated desktop. Some screens are briefly pink when they first appear but the they self-correct.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Tax Planner, Deduction Finder, Lifetime Planner, Debt Reduction, Capital Gains Estimator, Online Tax Tools, Anything in the "Property & Debt" menu.. probably other "advanced" stuff also. I only focused on what I needed: Basic account entry and reconciliation

Additional Comments

Thanks to JDPFu for documenting how to get 2011 working. It worked with 2012 also: I started with a fresh wine environment: mv .wine .wine_OLD winecfg (to set up the env) (install winetricks) winetricks fontfix winetricks corefonts vcrun6 winetricks gdiplus winetricks dotnet20 winetricks ie6 winetricks ie8 Winecfg-->Default-->Windows7 Winecfg-->qw.exe-->EmulateDesktop Run it from a command line: ./qw.exe

HowTo / Notes

Installation tips from Quicken 2013 that may be helpful

From http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=30158

  • vcrun6 msls31 and gdiplus all seem unnecessary, and in fact gdi seems to significantly slow down Quicken.   Microsoft fonts, Internet Explorer 6 or higher and .Net 2 or higher seem to be all that's needed with wine 1.6 or higher.
  • Manual and automatic updates can fail if host system is connected to the internet during original installation and during any automatic or manually downloaded & applied updates.  Try updating manually with host internet disabled.  Quicken automatic software updates should be disabled.
  • If running on a 64 bit machine, force 32 bit in wine via environment variable as some versions of wine have issues on 64 bit machines. (eg "WINEARCH=win32 wine ....")
  • If installing on a multiple core system, run all operations on a single core only as multiple core operations do not seem to be well managed under wine + Quicken.  (eg, "numactl --physcpubind=+1  wine ...")
