What works is that it installs without any problems at all using the default Wine package that comes with Xubuntu 11.10. It never crashed while I was using it. I loaded some of the models, modified and saved them, and even rendered their images in BMP format and saved the images.
What does not
The display is sometimes glitchy. When I go to camera-POV mode and rotate the camera to look around, the area inside the camera's view is displayed as just a checkerboard.
What was not tested
I did not render a full animation, nor did I spend a long time creating a model to test for long-run stability.
Anyone who owned Ray Dream probably has a lot of creative work stuck in the RDS file format. Windows 7 won't run Ray Dream, but Wine will. I hope this helps some artists out there recover their work and have a last bit of fun with this classic program.
