BridgeCentral

2.2.x has automatic replication of MP to the central DBf database.  Therefore it asks for a security code in more situations than in 2.1.x and earlier.  Otherwise very similar to 2.1.x and 2.0.x.

What works

Essentially all tested features work (if they work in Windows):

  • Connection types 6 (test), 4 (fjernklub) and 2 (db hosted at DBf)
  • Creating a test club on wine (db auto-created by a click or two)
  • Display of the DBf Welcome.html (news) inside the program
  • Tournament creation, editing, printing (to CupsPDF) and upload to web
  • Automatic assignment of Bronze Points (BP/MP) done correctly
  • Data packet exchange between fjernklub and hovedklub via Internet or local zip (in 2.2.x only the export fully tested due to passwd problem)
  • Printing or extracting various lists from the member data
  • Importing a custom table plan (skifteplan)
  • Moving any existing local database from Windows to wine (just copy the Data directory and the Club.bin file from Windows).
  • Practically instant opening of all windows (except initially if you use the bloated Gecko debug dlls and they aren't cached)

What does not

In wine 1.4 (and many other versions too), after some minutes of operation, possibly completely idle, BridgeCentral is likely to crash with "Invalid floating point operation" in Gecko (fldcw instruction in JSDOUBLE_IS_INT32).  There are several work-arounds:

  • Boot pc with no network connected, don't connect it after boot, and use only a local club (test club or fjernklub).
  • Save your names and points every few minutes.  Only unsaved data are lost, no corruption has ever occurred.
  • Hack mozjs.dll with the Perl script supplied in a soon-to-be posted bugzilla report (replacing some 387 code with SSE).
  • Use a much older or maybe newer wine.
There are minor font/dpi issues, essentially cosmetic only.  The perfect font selection and dpi setting hasn't been found yet (using only free fonts).
  • From the default 96 dpi in winecfg (= Fedora default), up to 100 dpi, no functionality is lost: all checkboxes in the result printing box are visible.  But some texts in that box are cut off or slightly misplaced.  Also only one name at a time is visible in the pair edit box in the startliste edit dialogue.  The DBf logo in the login box is cut off.
  • At 101 dpi most texts are noticeably larger.  The DBf logo is fine, no longer cut off.  Both names in the pair edit box are visible simultaneously as intended by the designer.  But functionality is lost in the result printing box, because the choice for MP title inclusion is no longer visible.  (I personally don't need that option, so I've opted for 101 dpi and thus a more beautiful and easily readable display).
The "DBf kode" (central db security code) entry box in BridgeCentral version 2.2.1 - 2.2.3 apparently doesn't work: it claims that the entered code is empty whatever you type.  But this happens for my fellow club adminstrator on Windows too, maybe because our code has expired.

Workarounds

What was not tested

These functions now require a security code (for me) and were not tested in BridgeCentral 2.2.x:

  • Send data packet from main club (hovedklub) (but creating the packet works)
  • Import data packet to main club (hovedklub)
  • Edit an MP entry of a member (to correct error or force re-replication)
  • Add a new member, possibly with lookup in central db
However they all worked fine in the previous generations of BridgeCentral (and wine) and are expected to work again when the code problem is solved (in BridgeCentral -- not a wine problem).  Other functionality not tested:
  • Connection types 1, 3 and 5
  • Creating a fjernklub (my existing fjernklub db was copied from Windows XP)
  • Creating/editing a table plan (skifteplan) (the imported one happened to be created on Windows)
  • Adding or editing user logins in the main club
  • Lots of minor options in various places

Additional Comments

BridgeCentral is only available as a 32 bit program. But here on x86_64 it works in exactly the same way whether you run it with only the i686 wine packages or in a mixed 32/64 bit .wine directory (WOW64) created by wine64.
