Additional Comments

4.11 to 4.13 staging, it ran perfectly under all wine versions. Unofficial "Fallout Fixt" patch works greatly too (tried the "purist" version only).

My hardware: MSI Z270 Carbon Pro, Intel i5-7500, GTX 1050ti (Nvidia driver 415.27), 16GB DDR4

"ddraw" override required for me, Wine 1.7.19
by CJ on Thursday July 31st 2014, 9:56
In order to get this to work for me, I had to add in a "ddraw" library override (in winecfg), set to "Native, then Builtin" (the default). This was recommended in the AppDB's entry for the GOG version of Fallout 2, and seems to apply here as well, at least for me. Fallout doesn't have the .ini file mentioned in Fallout 2, but merely adding in the library override did the trick for me.

(Note that when you attempt to add an override for "ddraw" it'll give you a warning about changing the library order - it seems to be safe to ignore that, at least for running this game.)

The symptoms that I'd been seeing prior to doing this is that the opening movie was just black on the screen, with the game's audio being rather stuttery. Eventually I did get to the main menu, but the mouse seemed non-operational, and the menu was flickering terribly.
free game, limited time

I wanted others to know this game is free at the moment, and will be going away on gog.com. So get it while you can.

www.gog.com/news/free_games_fallout_fallout_2_and_fallout_tactics

"Get Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics absolutely FREE (that's 0 bottle caps!) on GOG.com until Saturday, December 14, at 1:59PM GMT! "

"Please note that all three classic Fallout titles are pending right holder change. Sadly, to the best of our knowledge, we'll be forced to remove Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics from our offer. That doesn't mean, however, that you won't be able to download them if they are already a part of collection by then. Secure your copies today (or anytime before Saturday, December 14, at 1:59PM GMT)!"
