What works

Not much, you can get into a cockpit, but the cockpit is 2/3rds on the screen, so missing quite a bit of data off screen.

What does not

Running the game at all if you use a WINEARCH=win64 default prefix.

So with the workarounds described later, the game wont just error and quit, but the videos wont play.

Workarounds

You need gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad:i376 and gstreamer1.0-libav:i386 to get the game to almost work.

If you just have plugins-bad installed, you can alt-tab and hit enter on the error messages, skipping past 2 or 3 videos before playing.

What was not tested

Any length of time, this game is heavily video based, without those, its kinda pointless.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

Make sure the prefix is WINEARCH=win32, and unlike before it's something, maybe with some tweaking someone can get this working, but its a start.

After some more testing;

https://www.wcnews.com/wcpedia...

Gives us a patch that is fractionally better. In fullscreen mode, the game actually shows complete cockpit in the corner of the screen with visible choices and videos of other pilots. Videos still dont work but allows you to make choices at least

How to extract GOG .bin files
by Talos on Friday August 15th 2014, 19:50
You can extract directly the .BIN files without errors by using:

$ sudo apt-get install innoextract
$ innoextract setup_mygame.exe

The problem is: The game still not working due (in my opinion) of the DVD version (vob files patch).

If you use the win95 version of the main executable, downloaded at wcnews, the game runs but cannot find the avi files

For some reason WC4 is looking for the VOB files in C:\vob. If you create a symlink from c:\wc4gamesdirectory\vob to c:\vob, the files can be located by the game. It is also important to run regsvr32 and register the mpeg2decoder and ac3decoder ax filters for Windows.
