What works

  • Pyjamas the compiler (pyjs)
  • Pyjamas-Desktop using MSHTML.DLL (IE6, IE7, IE8)
  • Applications compiled to javascript run successfully under IE6, IE7 and IE8 under Wine.

What does not

Pyjamas-Desktop presently does not work with Wine's built-in GECKO Engine, nor do all pyjamas applications work under iexplore when using Gecko.

The reason why Pyjamas-Desktop presently does not work under Wine's Gecko Engine is because there is an OLE Window Interface missing from the Wine implementation of MSHTML.

The reason why many Pyjamas javascript applications do not work under Wine's Gecko Engine is because the javascript for running under the user-agent string for IE is coded specifically for the IE engine: Gecko's javascript engine is not compatible with IE, so there are subtle failures.  The helloworld example runs, but that's about it.

Additional Comments

To get Pyjamas-Desktop to work, python 2.6 as well as python-comtypes and then either of IE6, IE7 or IE8 are required. This is a pretty stunning achievement that MSMHTML.DLL's COM interface is even accessible via python running under Wine. To use IE8, instructions had to be followed that include installing IE6 first, followed by upgrading to IE8.
