HowTo / Notes

Installation on Fedora 16

Installing Quicken 2012 Home and Business on Fedora 16, x86_64

  • 32-bit wine (i686)
  • 32-bit Gecko
  • winetricks
  • q4wine

Set up:

  • Set WINEARCH to win32
  • create a new prefix in console window by setting WINEPREFIX variable to a non-existent directory, then run winecfg to create the prefix and the specified directory.
  • set prefix version to Windows 7 in winecfg
  • ./winetricks fontfix
  • ./winetricks corefonts vcrun6
  • ./winetricks gdiplus
  • ./winetricks dotnet20
  • winecfg (change msvcrt overide to builtin, native)
  • ./winetricks ie6
  • disable network (to prevent Quicken updates)
  • mount cd rom
  • install quicken (wine /mnt/cdrom/install.exe)
  • install latest quicken update (wine QW2012R7Patch.exe)
  • ./winetricks ie8
  • Remove msvcrt setting as it creates problems with ie8 installation.
  • in q4wine create shortcut to qw.exe,
  • enable virtual desktop 1280x854
  • add quicken icon jpg

Note: Not all the steps may be required (like msvcrt setting and installing ie6) but Quicken now works so no incentive to test again. Please provide feedback if you decide to avoid ie6 installation or some different settings.

Installation on Fedora 17 x86_64, wine 1.5.3 (i686)

Much improved Wine makes Quicken now install out of the box. No need to use winetricks preparation. Simply create a new wineprefix and run the installation.
After installation, manually running offline update patch worked well.

App crashed on the first run with references to mscoree, which points to .Net Framework requirement. Hence I installed .Net Framework 20 (dotnet20) that I had from previous installation with winetricks. Simply run "wine dotnetfx.exe".

Run "wine qw.exe" from the installed directory or use q4wine GUI. As usual, using a virtual desktop is necessary in order to display the File Open (and possibly other) dialogs.

Once inside the program, remove the registration prompt by holding Ctrl + Shift keys and then selecting Tools -> One Step Update.

Installation tips from Quicken 2013 that may be helpful

  • vcrun6 msls31 and gdiplus all seem unnecessary, and in fact gdi seems to significantly slow down Quicken.   Microsoft fonts, Internet Explorer 6 or higher and .Net 2 or higher seem to be all that's needed with wine 1.6 or higher.
  • Manual and automatic updates can fail if host system is connected to the internet during original installation and during any automatic or manually downloaded & applied updates.  Try updating manually with host internet disabled.  Quicken automatic software updates should be disabled.
  • If running on a 64 bit machine, force 32 bit in wine via environment variable as some versions of wine have issues on 64 bit machines. (eg "WINEARCH=win32 wine ....")
  • If installing on a multiple core system, run all operations on a single core only as multiple core operations do not seem to be well managed under wine + Quicken.  (eg, "numactl --physcpubind=+1  wine ...")
