Sharing how I managed to install and run AI CS6 on Manjaro and Ubuntu:

Arch / Manjaro:
sudo pacman -S wine winetricks

Debian / Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install wine winetricks

Install winetricks packages:
winetricks atmlib gdiplus msxml3 msxml6 vcrun2005 vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 ie6 fontsmooth-rgb gecko allfonts

Execute your Adobe Illustrator CS6 installation file ("Setup.exe"):
wine Setup.exe

Now you should be able to execute Adobe Illustrator:
wine start "/home/USER/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS6 (64 Bit)/Adobe Illustrator CS6 (64 Bit).lnk"

Strange one - I can save as AI no problem, but when Save For Web the dialogue opens everything looks fine, but no file is saved no matter what settings are used.

Everything else seems fine.

Actually that's not what it's doing.

It seems to be confusing file and folders.

I found that one save DID work but it saved as the folder name it was saving to and renamed the folder XXXXX.tmp.

Is the pathfinder working, with Illustrator CS6?
In my case, it cause a crash !

Works fine for me... unite, minus front , intersect and exclude and Buttons in the pathfinders bottom section works all ok. Did not test the expand button in the pathfinder since I don't know how to make it available (not disabled). Illustrator work so well I do not even remember the last time it crashed! That is really good for an app running under Wine !

I ran it with Wine 1.5.18 (Splash screen display weird on higher versions) using PlayOnLinux. I've tried using Wine 1.5.3, but I get the same problem (x86 Illustrator, on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64).

This has to be because I run a portable version.. I've tried many times activating a full install, but I never managed to do it.

I too ahd troubles activating it. I think it activates on the new version of Wine but I did not test installing it all over again, I just kept my wine install and updated wine many times throught updates provided by Fedora repos.

What I did first is keep the demo version and re-install it after 30 days to get the demo again.

Then I tried activating it with my serial because I got tired of reinstalling it every 30 days. It did not work in my case, thought it should now with wine 1.5.24. There is something that does not works when the activation process is trying to connect to adobe servers.

Then since I was left with only this option, i downloaded a cracked atmlib.dll and patched it. It then works and is activated as it should have been with my serial.

Installing illustrator in wine did crash a couples versions ago, but you only had to copy files over from a windows install and it worked. the wine windows registry was OK. I think new versions of wine are working for the install thought some had reported problems but im not sure...

It should not... If it crashes when copying files over from a winxp/win7 box then it must be your adobe illustrator installer/files.... did you install the demo version downloaded from the adobe website ?

It's probably because it's a Portable version;

I've tried copying my install from a Adobe Master Collection CS6 installer (I've installed only Illustrator), but I guess I was a bit rushed, I'll try again.

On the top of my mind, guess I need to copy these files:

Program Files (x86)/Adobe/*
Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe/*
Doc and Settings/Gamex/Application Data/Adobe/*

And maybe WinSxS?

As I spoke with Adobe Customer Services once, they've told me that it's illegal to use their products under Linux. This is where we may break EULA. So now I am a bit confused, and also by cracking their software isn't against EULA also? Is there any chance to legally run their software under Linux?

I'm trying with Wine 1.5.24 right now.

If it crash, I'm going to try again with copying a full install from a Windows XP virtual machine.

Copy the following files to Playonlinux wineprefix directory

Program Files/Adobe
Program Files/Common Files
ProgramData

ProgramData (change folder option to see hidden folders)
users/your name/AppData
windows/System32
windows/winsxs

First run takes the longest. I think it needs to update the registry and all. Once done loading you can close it and relaunch it.

Ubuntu 12.04 64. Pretty sure I have all the suggested winetricks libraries installed and also have no trouble installing and running Photoshop and Flash CS6. Both Photoshop and Flash did the whole "Installation Failed" but as noted with each program, the install actually does work. However, this does not seem to be the case with Illustrator no matter how long I let it sit. Each time it hangs at the following output:

It did the same thing for me. You have to install the illustrator demo version in windows and copy the files in c:/program files/Adobe over to your wine bottle.

The installer on wine crashes without even installing the Illustrator.exe file...

Please try following my instructions and running the provided script and carefully following instructions there... it has been working for me since wine 1.5.3 and it is still working on wine 1.5.11

If you have troubles making it work, just comment this post and I'll help you make it work.

I think I'm getting closer. With 1.5.13 I get the following:

I don't think the issue in my last comment had anything to do with the application. After upgrading to 1.5.13 from 1.5.11 I never created a new winebottle. I backed up the old wine directory, and then created a new one with:

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine winecfg

Then, I moved my files over to the new wine directory and not only Illustrator, but Photoshop and Flash CS6 all work nicely. Thank you WINE community!

In my case, the Nouveau graphic driver for nVidia graphic cards is causing a number of bugs : the wine dialogs does only show up on one screen, on the other monitor they appear white. Some illustrator elements are not updated as the window moves, and when starting illustrator with "wine explorer /desktop=InDesign,1680x1050 ~/...drive_c/Illustrator.exe" it complains about OpenGL commands that are not available.

If you face those problems, simply use the real NVidia driver, this one does not have those bugs.

This is my script to easily reinstall Illustrator in wine... works like a charm on wine 1.5.3 & wine 1.5.8 (I have not tested it yet on newer wine versions)

To make it work, you need 4 things :

1. The trial version of illustrator CS6 you can download at : www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=illustrator
Only the 32bit version seem to work. Place the files you downloaded in the folder you want, change downloadPath variable in the script accordingly.

2. The c:/program files (x86)/Adobe folder with all its content from a windows install. Copy the Adobe folder in a folder named "unpacked_files" located in the $downloadPath folder.

3. Winetricks. If you never installed msxml3, start by downloading msxml3 package at this address : download.cnet.com/Microsoft-XML-Parser-MSXML-3-0-Service-Pack-7-SP7/3000-7241_4-10731613.html

4. the aiinstall.sh script. Copy the file content below and create your aiinstall.sh file. Do not forget to right-click properties, go to permissions tab and check "Allow executeing file as a program". Change the lines that begin with wineBottlePath and downloadPath to match the paths where you want the install script to check for the Adobe Illustrator CS6 trial download files and the path where you want your Illustrator to be installed.

How to install Illustrator CS6 in Wine :

1. Run the following script. IMPORTANT: run the script as a regular user not as root.

2. Click next and continue to all windows dialogs that appears during the process.

2. When running Set-Up.exe (Illustrator setup), it will ask you if you want to run the trial or the full version if you have a serial. Choose run full version and enter any serial good or bad it does not matter. The install program ask for internet connection which you have but the installer does not see it, click connect later.... Let the installer run a long time after it display a message saying "Installation Failed. Your installation encountered errors". The installer it is installing Illustrator in the background for real even if it does not seem so.

This is my shell script to install Illustrator CS6 : Adapt it to your needs :

ITS WORKING! The installation finished, and Illustrator is RUNNING! This is a big step for Linux! The 1.5.10 wine failed, but is downgraded to 1.5.5 and its worked!

Great ! Sorry to hear that 1.5.10 failed. I'll install it to find a workaround for that version so people running illustrator will be able to upgrade wine.

For me Flash CS6, Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6 were the only apps that kept me on windows...

Thanks for this script, I've now got Illustrator CS6 running perfectly in Wine.

By default Wine seems to have anti-aliased text switched off. This is fine for most things but in Illustrator the text in the drop down menus is unreadable.

To fix this you need to edit the windows registry. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] and add this;

Try to run this in a terminal :

Replace /home/mywinebottledirectory with the path to your wine bottle you are trying to install illustrator into. Make sure to install illustrator in its own wine bottle, do not reuse another wine bottle.

And check if it gives you any error saying cannot find some file... Microsoft moved a lot of packages lately and this makes many winetricks not working anymore.

I am running Fedora 17x64 with wine 1.5.13 and its working since wine 1.5.4 at least (if i remember well this is the first wine version I tested this script on I think).

can some one upload all files which are needed (or direct to run files), because i try and try and nothing works, please help. Maybe a playonlinux guide?

First try to run this script, it will fail but it will install in the background most of what you need, when using wine 1.5.x. Does not work anymore on wine 1.7:

Then, you need to copy these folders form a windows install to your wine bottle :

The last 2 folders might not be needed... but just in case you can copy them too.

I used a 64 bits wine bottle, but a 32 bit illustrator install.

Then you need to export this key from your windows registry to the wine bottle registry :
HKLM\Software\Adobe

It should all work now.

2 last paths should read :
c:\users\yourusername\Application Data\Adobe
c:\users\yourusername\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe
