Everything works, both single player and multiplayer.
Only issues are that the frame rate is not high, the game can pause or jerk when loading graphics and on start you might need to Alt-Tab until the game is in the foreground. But it is playable and enjoyable. This doesn't not effect the ability to do well in multiplayer games.

Install. Should work as well as 1.4.1 though, see Homefront > 1.5.500001. If you have problems then install using wine 1.4.1 and then switch to 1.5.17 to play.
There is a bug affecting Steam in wine 1.5.17 (1.5.10 onwards) Steam text invisible with dwrite.dll enabled http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31374 This is worked around by running winecfg and then in Libraries setting dwrite to disabled.
