What works
This is an update to my original entry.
Downloading, installation and patching all work under wine. I created a character on early access weekend and played through the Tokyo disaster intro scene. All cutscenes so far have worked and loading screens are actually faster than in windows.
My settings:
d3dx9 and d3dx9_43 installed in a new prefix using winetricks.
d3dx9_43 set to builtin under Winecfg > Libraries. The game detected directx after this and installed properly. I got a message that my video driver was too old, but the game worked anyway.
Videomemorysize must be set, otherwise the game crashes after login. I set this value to 512 using winetricks.
What does not
The game ran smoothly through the intro scene, but slowed to a crawl once I entered populated areas. Going into Settings > Video Options > Advanced and setting Vegetation detail to 0 fixed the problem.
The only problem I have now is that my screen flickers constantly. I'm not sure if this is due to my nvidia card (screen flickering with nvidia SLI enabled was a problem with Age of Conan) but it makes the game hard to play for me. Others may not have this issue. Apart from the flickering, everything seems to work.
