What works

Tested was the Fallout Steam Retail version with the following additional modifications:

  • TeamX Semi-Official Patch 1.2
Needed to get a falloutw.exe which works with the High Resolution Mod.
  • TeamX Unofficial Patch 1.3.5
  • High Resolution Mod 4.1.8

Followed the guide on the Steam User Forums for installing the modifications.

So, what does work:

  • Installation via Steam.
  • Installing all the mentioned modifications (it's really just copying everything into the Fallout directory and running the self-extracting archive).
  • Setting the desired resolution in the High Resolution Mod utility.
  • Running Fallout in DirectX9 mode.
Installing d3dx9_36 via WineTricks is required so that the DirectX mode works correctly. It could also be any other version, but I only tested with that one.

What does not

  • The "Basic" option in the High Resolution Mod utility, which yields abysmal performance or errors (OpenGL out of memory exceptions).
  • The "Direct Draw 7" option in the High Resolution Mod utility, which triggers the dreaded "Mouse Lag" problem in game (mouse works fine in menus, but in the game itself it lags severely).
  • The "DirectX 9" option in the High Resolution Mod utility if d3dx9_36 is not installed. Without that package installed it will display everything in a broken grayscale/black and white mode. The game will work, though.

Additional Comments

Fallout Steam version works flawlessly out of the box and also with the unofficial patches installed. It's only the High Resolution Mod that needs some extra work.

If you experience difficulties starting/running

the game out of steam you might want to try the following:
1. Start the steam client as you do normally.
2. Select the library menu in the steam client
3. open (in another terminal) "winecfg", go to libraries, search for dbghelp, set to native then builtin
4. start fallout

As my steam client runs only when dbghelp is disabled (wine version 1.6.1) I didn't knew which settings are required to get fallout running (as it didn't run with my default "run steam" settings) but found this solution accidentally myself. Hope this might help someone.
