What works

  • Installer
    • Used right-click option to run it with Wine Windows Program Launcher
    • Custom install, default location, but set it to store user data in the program folder
  • Import of .prof (game profile) files created with the Windows version
    • I copied the "VirtualHD" and "confs" folders from a previous Windows install to see if they can be brought over directly.  Answer: Yes.
  • Creation of a new game profile using the Profile Wizard, including downloading information from Mobygames.com
  • Sound, after correcting settings:
    • Profile defaults carried over from Windows were not compatible with Wine.  Correcting settings listed under "Activate Sound" as follows fixed sound glitches:
      • Sample Rate 22050
      • Block Size 1024
      • Prebuffer at least 20
  • Changing the settings on many profiles at once using the "Edit Multiple Profiles" option under Extras.

What does not

In D-Fend Reloaded itself, I have not found anything that doesn't work.  See DOSBox 0.74 for any relevant bugs or malfunctions.

    Workarounds

    What was not tested

    • Integration with any emulator other than DOSBox
    • Creation of a new profile using any method other than the profile wizard
    • Many other games (just tried to get a representative mix)

    Additional Comments

If you are inclined to run DOSBox under Wine rather than natively, this is a great tool- it has many features to make getting an old game running much easier. Its ability to integrate with other emulators and engines is dimmed by the fact that if DFR is run under Wine, you need to run the other applications under Wine as well. If you have many games, space may become an issue. You can store the game data outside your Wine folder to relieve this. You can store the game data on a drive that is mountable in both Linux and another OS if you use the games in more than one OS. (I store mine on an OS-agnostic drive so both Windows and Linux can reach the games.) Note that sharing .conf files may not work, depending on the settings needed. DBGL is a similar application based on Java that is available in a native Linux version, and has similar core features to D-Fend Reloaded. It has a bit steeper learning curve, but it can be used natively in many operating systems.
