What works

Installer, after dependencies are satisfied.

Main Program:

This program brings new meaning to the term "full-featured".  With the exception of the items listed in "Does not work" and "not tested", everything works.

  • Program Runs
  • System Tray Icon is present and shows correct behavior
  • Control-button hotkeys work when Stickies has focus.
  • "Global" Hotkeys work when any Wine window has focus.
  • Stickies are retained through normal (Exit program, shut down system) and abnormal program closures (XKilled Stickies, used control-alt-backspace to restart system)
  • Reformatting notes works- color, font, style.
  • Resizing notes.
  • Hiding notes, locking them, putting them to sleep, etc. works
    • The Attach feature does work, but it only detects Wine windows, not native ones.
  • The Search feature- select text in a note and right-click to search for that text in your browser.
  • Transparency- the image of the style in the Options menu will not fade, but if you set transparency, your notes will fade when they lose focus.  This is on an individual basis, not all notes together- if you switch from one Sticky to another, the old note will fade and the new note will come opaque so you can work with it.
  • Bulleted Lists

Help File- standard behavior for a Windows Help file- clickable contents tree, etc.

Installation Procedure:

Note: The current version (20120308) of Winetricks has outdated links for the files Stickies needs.  You can download a modified version of the script in the Notes section below, which will look at the wayback machine's version of the relevant pages, and as of 8/14/12, install the packages correctly using the instructions here.  If you have a later version, I don't recommend replacing it with this one, but if the links haven't been fixed in the official version, you can download this one and run it from anywhere.  I make no warranty in such a situation that it won't break something else, as I have no way of knowing what changes will take place in later versions of Winetricks.

In order to install the packages using the GUI in Winetricks, the command path is "Select the default wineprefix > Install a Windows DLL or component".  The following packages are needed:

"mfc42", titled "Visual C++ 6 sp4 mfc42 library; part of vcrun6"

"jet40", titled "MS Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8"

"riched20", titled "MS RichEdit Control version 2.0 (riched20.dll, riched32.dll)"

"riched30", titled "MS RichEdit Control version3.0 (riched20.dll, msls31.dll)"

The error after installing Jet indicating that dao360.dll is not found does not appear to affect the function of Stickies, but it does prevent the checkbox in the Winetricks package listing from staying checked to indicate that the package is installed.  This can be remedied by copying the folder "dao" from "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft shared\" to "c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\" or correcting the name "Microsoft shared" to "Microsoft Shared", depending on the structure of your Wine c: drive.

Run the Stickies install program using Wine Windows Program Loader.

What does not

  • No "Start Menu" option/launcher created.
  • Alt-F4 "Exit" Hotkey does not work.
  • Auto-align menu options in the System Tray  menu do not work as expected- query in to the dev on whether this is a bug or a misunderstanding as to the purpose of these items.
  • Titles shown in the Manage Stickies Window for notes that don't have a set title are weird- missing-character rectangles and apparently random text.
  • Notes jump around a lot when being moved, but do end up in the right place if you ignore this.
  • It is sometimes possible to resize a note by dragging the vertical edges so that not all the text is visible.  Stickies freezes when this happens, and eventually the system offers a Force Quit.  Restarting restores the note to a readable state.
  • Drop shadows do not work at all
  • Numbered and Lettered lists do not work.

    Additional Comments

Still in the process of testing- will update as I go through all the options. I am in discussion with the developer, who is willing to tweak the program to work well in Wine- the rating is likely to improve considerably as bugs are addressed.

    Winetricks With Updated Links

All of Stickies' dependencies have outdated links in Winetricks version 20120308.  I have found links that work as of August 14, 2012 and added them to Winetricks, which allows it to install them correctly.  No other changes were made.  You can download my slightly-modified version at this google docs link:

    https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0kgfY5fFihQWXdiZ1gyMWZlYVU

    msftedit.dll

It appears this app may require an updated version of msftedit.dll.  I am currently testing the version which can be extracted from Hotfix kb883483 (download page here, requires license agreement to download), and am working with the dev to resolve the remaining issues.
