What works

Age of Empires I:

Both (Vanilla + Rise of Rome) install and run

Multiplayer LAN works (I did install directplay typing "winetricks directplay" in terminal)

Age of Empires II:

Both (Vanilla + Conqueror) install and run

Multiplayer LAN works (I did install directplay typing "winetricks directplay" in terminal)

What does not

Age of Empires II:

First installation did not work:

After vanilla install, "system requires reboot" message pops pup when trying to start the game and wineboot did not fix this problem. Running .exe from installation folder let the game run successfully though.

Same message "system requires reboot" appears when trying to install The Conquerors and refuses to continue. Again, wineboot did not help.

I used a new .wine folder and everything worked

(I was unable to reproduce the problem with "system requires reboot". The only thing I did was using a fresh .wine folder)

What was not tested

Campaign, Mapeditor

Hardware tested

  • GPU:
  • Driver:

HowTo / Notes

To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:

(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks

and then exec:
winetricks directplay

It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.
