The program can be installed. The program runs and shows the full main window including the virtual machine inventory. Most operations can be performed. The program seems stable.
What does not
I can't access any VM's console.
What was not tested
All credit for this goes to Eric Wallengren. VMware vSphere Client 5.1.0 Build 1235233 runs on Wine 1.6.0 on Ubuntu 13.04 prepared with winetricks 20130707. 1. Get winetricks. cd /usr/local/bin wget http://winetricks.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/winetricks chmod ugo+x winetricks 2. Configure wine. cd cp -a .wine .wine_PREVIOUS # Make a clean wine installation rm -rf .wine WINEARCH=win32 /usr/local/bin/winetricks msxml3 dotnet35sp1 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 vjrun20 Follow all instructions for the installation of the above packages (save the cache for later usage). Download the client from the VMware host and run it with Wine. wine VMware-viclient.exe You will get an error about the installation of hcmon.sys indicating that the install was a failure. In another terminal window, cp -a .wine .wine_VSPHERE-CLIENT Formerly (9 June 2013, with wine 1.5.31 and the winetricks of that date) you could just launch the installer one more time and elect to remove the program and it would actually finish the installation instead, but now (30 August 2013 with wine 1.6.0ubuntu1, winetricks 20130707 and vSphere Client 5.1.0 Build 1235233) that does not seem to be the case. Exit the installer. Restore the saved wine tree. mv .wine .wine_FAILED-VSPHERE-CLIENT mv .wine_VSPHERE-CLIENT .wine Run vSphere Client. wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/VMware/Infrastructure/Virtual\ Infrastructure\ Client/Launcher/VpxClient.exe Fix the .desktop file. The installation process creates two files named "VMware vSphere Client.desktop", (1) in ~/Desktop, (2) in .local/share/applications/wine/Programs/VMware/. They are different. Move (1) over (2). mv -f Desktop/VMware\ vSphere\ Client.desktop .local/share/applications/wine/Programs/VMware/VMware\ vSphere\ Client.desktop Press the window key and in the dash enter 'VM' and click on the VMware icon to start vSphere Client. Lock the resulting icon to the launcher.
